"Seems like people don't have to do much of anything," Jim says mildly. People are people, primitive or not. (And he does think this is primitive-- not just in tech, but in culture, both Wyver and Olympia. He knows it's a pitfall, the elitist Federation streak he has, but jeez.)

It must shape a person differently, being an orphan. Jim's family was basically garbage, dead or abusive or just absent, but it was - it is - something. Awkwardly polite terms are better than nothing, he thinks.
