If he's honest he doesn't remember much of what he did, other than that he was surviving and that's about all he could ask for in that point in time. Certainly for a kid like him the creature comforts didn't occur to him to want until he'd lived a little bit of the "high" life so to speak.
Though the high life for him at that point was most likely having his own bathroom to himself.
