I believe it's within their best interests to keep us happy, and that includes keeping their promises to tend to our loved ones. As much power as they may hold over us, there re a number of us with incredible powers, and all of us teaming up could certainly cause them far more trouble than they'd probably want to deal with.

That said, I don't see any reason for them to lie about it in the first place. They don't seem terribly malicious, and... I've had friends awaken and then go back to sleep.
