[He chuckles softly, not yet looking back towards Byerly. The things he's saying and the things he's thinking are two different things - the former, teasing, the latter nothing to tease about. Minutes ago, he was certain that he and Byerly were on the same page. If it meant restoring Maevaris, her students, Bull, the others... he would be able to make that choice. He would always make that choice. They came too far, and the people he walked this world with were too great a loss.

But when Dorian does look at him, thinks of warm nights visiting their home, seeing Prior, enjoying a night in, he finds that there is an overwhelming sense of doubt that leaves him without the quip he was going to follow that up with. A little sense of dread grips his heart. Would he make that choice?

No. He couldn't. But he swallows, and he grins, and he bears it.]


We'll drink to something greater, then. [A beat.] We should get going.
