"I can show you." Rather than confuse her by describing it, he pushes his coat aside and reaches for his Mauser broomhandle pistol from the holster at his belt. He doesn't hand it over for obvious reasons since it's loaded. "So you've got the barrel here," he points to the shooting tube, "and it needs to be loaded with bullets to actually cause harm, but they can kill someone... They're designed to kill more than they are to hurt someone, if I'm honest. If you find yourself staring down the barrel of something that looks like this, you're in trouble." Which is why he isn't pointing it at her, showing her the weapon from the side instead. "They were used for the war I was a part of."
He nods in understanding to how she feels about hearing her world being taken by the storm. There might have been horrible things going on in Steve's world, but it was still devastating to hear it was all gone, especially when he hoped peace would come from the end of the war one day.
"It's a lot to accept." And as for her not being more open with him - he's the last person to blame someone for being guarded. If he knew she was withholding information from him, he'd respect her intelligence for keeping some things close to her chest. Steve means her no harm - he wanted to help her by informing her of dangers she'd never come across, like the gun - but they're still strangers and she doesn't know he's a good man.
