He made her smile with that. "Most would burn you at the stake for admitting that." But he was right. The superstitious did tend to blame everything on magic, even small events that were completely unrelated. Though with her mother, it was hard to say what was a coincidence and what wasn't. "Is your world more accepting of magic?"

He was at least brave to admit it, whether there was punishment here for it or not. "I imagine things will. For now they are kind, but something might happen. They're at war. Men at war don't always think rationally, even towards their own people. And here we are, caught in the middle."
