( introlog #5 ) strangerer things
You have spent the last few days on Thesa Station, taking in the knowledge that your world is no more. Perhaps you've made some friends (or maybe an enemy or two). Either way, you aren't expected to spend all of your time on the Station. El Nysa needs you, after all, and you promised you'd help the planet thrive. Are you ready?
Submit an AC-eligible thread with a new character as a participant for 2 OLYMPIA REP POINTS OR 2 WYVER REP POINTS, respectively, HERE or HERE. THESA STATION
All refugees on the station are called to the hangar where a large-scale teleporter has been set up; everyone will be sent to the planet together. Simply step onto the space between the arrays and wait. Before they depart, all new refugees will be given a starter kit!
You may have heard about earlier technical difficulties, but don't worry. I promise everything is in perfect working order this time. I'd say I tested it myself, but since that's not exactly possible, you'll just have to trust me! (Please.) The older refugees will also be there to guide you to ensure no one is left confused... or behind. Make sure you wait for them — I've been detecting something odd so I'll be having them meet you at the landing site. Good luck, refugees! Not that you'll be needing it or anything... The arrays begin to hum and glow, quickly building into a brilliant wash of light. It creates a column that travels all the way from Thesa Station to the surface of El Nysa. With the night sky as a canvas, the beam can be seen all the way from Olympia and Wyver — a view that has the natives whispering of blessings. As a sudden but beautiful aurora splays across the sky, the refugees down on the planet receive a message asking them to travel to the landing site — and warning them to prepare for what may come of the strange readings Zasere's gotten from the teleport itself. ON A BEAM OF LIGHT ![]()
Traveling through the light leaves the impression of blinding starlight, a strange sense of weightlessness, and a disorienting moment of total sensory deprivation. The radiance of your teleport hangs bright in the sky above you, a shimmering aurora that reflects off the calm waters below, visible for miles all around.
You've landed on a peninsula to the east of the South Outpost. There's little here — scattered trees on spring-barren plains, with a few overgrown, dilapidated structures poking out of the brush. All is quiet save for the keening of animals and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. This lonely desolation is hardly the bustling cities and vibrant cultures you were promised back on the station... BY CAMPFIRE'S GLOW. But waiting for you is a group of your predecessors, and with them, a veritable tent city, with portable stoves, coolers of food and drink, comfortable bedrolls, and cheerful rings of bonfires — all that you need to make merry of the night, courtesy of Overseer Voss, who has, thanks to his interest in blessed meteorological phenomena and refugees, decided to make a holy expedition of the affair. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS ![]()
Despite going off without hitch, the new refugees' arrival isn't entirely without incident. It seems that the "blessed" beam of light that brought the refugees down to El Nysa brought something else along with it — a sliver of the Storm. At least the beam was short enough that only a small fraction managed to squeeze through.
But it's enough to wreak a little havoc around the landing site and along the road back toward Olympia and Wyver — and even, for a few days, in the cities themselves. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE. The Storm is an undeniably destructive force, and that's proven with this small sliver's effect as it ripples across the continent. While there's no visible sign of its presence, strange phenomena soon begin to appear, corresponding with Zasere's odd readings. DECISIONS, DECISIONS... ![]()
The time is coming to make a choice — perhaps not a permanent choice, but unless you want to spend the rest of your nights out under the stars, you'll need to pick which city you will initially spend your time in. On the horizon, you will see that people have arrived to help you make that decision...
A FORK IN THE ROAD. Refugees and the hyper-religious wishing to hear Voss speak are not the only ones out and about under the light of the aurora. Citizens of both Olympia and Wyver have flocked to a point on the road midway between the cities and where the refugees have appeared, and they all have the same goal in mind: convincing the newcomers who have just descended in the blessed light of Thesa to come to their city and not the other. You've chosen your path, refugee, but that doesn't necessarily make it a permanent one. Watch out for the strange effects of the Storm, which linger still in the two cities and everywhere in between for the next few days before dissipating just as mysteriously as they came, but otherwise enjoy the welcome and make yourself at home — after all, this is home now. FINAL OOC NOTES

Ryuji Sakamoto | Persona 5 (TW/CW for Prompt 3b: domestic/physical abuse)
[This was honestly the best way to come down to the planet. The first time he'd been given a stupid nametag. The second time, when he'd gone up to get Akira, they'd been bombarded with meteors. This third time? It was just camping in the chilly night air and some weird feeling that something was coming. The electricity in the air was subtle, enough to keep him on edge, but not enough to stop him from enjoying a campout. It wasn't like they'd ever really gotten the chance to do something like this in Tokyo, after all. Ryuji is wandering the camp, looking around at all the different tents, stopping by random fires, and while he's friendly enough, he's definitely looking for people. Unlike the real new arrivals, he seems to know what he's doing, walking with purpose as he meanders from tent to tent, trying his best to knock on the fabric flaps before he lifts them to see who's inside.
New arrivals might mistake him for an older refugee and can ask him for help on anything.
Veteran refugees might notice he's more subdued than normal, a frown lurking on his face as he pushes back tent flaps and apologizes to inhabitants inside.]
Ah, sorry. Didn't mean to barge in.
2. The Truth is Out There
[No.
No.
Ryuji is stopped in the middle of wherever he is and staring at what looks like an alien bunny. It's quite cute - pale brown fur with white and black spots, long slender ears, thick fluffy feet, and long sleek whiskers all on a small rotund body that makes it look fit to be a Sanrio mascot. The bunny is staring up at him with soulless black eyes, twitching its little pink nose and waiting. Ryuji has his hands shoved in his pocket, a scowl on his face, and is very unimpressed by the adorable little bunster. By why? Because as he turns to leave and after taking three steps in either direction finds himself right back at the bunny, staring down at it.
NO.]
I'd eat you if I thought that would set me free, creepy-ass rabbit.
[The bunny sniffs and Ryuji groans, letting his head fall back. What did he do to deserve this? Help him?]
3. Forgetting is so Long
a. Here Comes the Reaper
[He'd been getting ready to go for a jog when the landscape shifted all around him, and he felt a familiar sense of dread fill the air. Where once there was an open field of tents and warm campfires, now there are subway walls and tracks and the place feels cramped, dark, and distorted. There are strange black and red vine-like growths crawling over every surface - the ceiling, the train tracks, the walls, the floors - almost like ivy or the human circulatory system. He's on a subway platform and Ryuji seems confused. He knows this place all too well, but how is he here again? They didn't go into Mementos; it was wiped along with the rest of his world when the Storm hit. Could it have something to do with--
It's faint, but it's there. The sound of ringing, like chains clanging in the distance. Ryuji freezes and suddenly notices someone else is in here with him. This feels way too familiar to him and he has a very bad feeling about it.]
Pleeeeease tell me you didn't hear that.
b. Home isn't Where the Heart is
[He should know by now after the earlier encounters. He should really, really know that this isn't real. Still, it hurts when he walks outside and finds himself standing in his old living room. Everything is exactly as he remembers it - the old table, the view into the kitchen, the smell of his mother's cooking on the stove as it bubbled away. Everything about is it perfect -- except that there is a third plate on the dinner table. There's two bottles of beer, one empty and the other already halfway gone, sitting in front of the plate at the head of the table. And there's the sound of someone crying in a back room. This isn't home. It's the nightmare that it used to be.
Ryuji is in a panic as he turns, ready to run to his mother's side, ignoring who else is in the room with him, but someone - a tall, Japanese man, face obscured by Ryuji's own desire to forget that he ever existed - appears from the hallway, slurring his words as he backhands Ryuji across the face. The blow knocks him to the floor and he gasps, the smell of alcohol like a fog in the air. Even if this is just a memory, the blood in his mouth sure as hell tastes real. The man takes a few more steps toward Ryuji and raises his hand again, punctuating every blow with a complaint. "You're a terrible brat! You lazy shit! You're the reason why everything's gone so wrong! She only pays attention to you anymore! It's all your fault!" Ryuji just rolls into a ball, protecting his head and neck with his arms as he's beaten. This is what it was always like. This is the part of his life he thought was over.]

a sword flashes to life in percy's hands -- hadn't he just been holding a pen? -- with a bronze leaf-shaped blade, glowing faintly in the dim subway station. he's not exactly used to walks through the wilderness turning into...well, random creepy urban landscapes, but here they are anyway. ]
I heard it, [ he says, grim. ] Let me guess: we have to go that way.
[ investigating the freaky clanging noise is the last thing he wants to do, so he has a feeling they're going to have to... ]

Holy shit did he just manifest a freaking sword? Out of thin air?? Because there's no way it came from that pen, right? Who ever heard of a pen turning into a glowing sword??
Ryuji is so taken aback that he doesn't notice when a phantom van with a cat-tail whips around the corner and speeds off in the opposite direction. He was absolutely certain that he saw himself in that van, but in his thief gear. But that was impossible because he was right here?]
Uh.... No? No, we definitely don't go that way. We go any way BUT that way!
[He reaches over to grab the other teen's arm, when he sees it. a behemoth in rags, draped in chains, toting two long barrelled guns, and reeking of despair rounds the corner and starts floating directly for them. Ryuji feels his knees go weak and he spins the stranger around.]

Which is why she looks startled when the flap to her tent gets pushed open--
--but then she realizes she knows this guy.] Oh--
Um, hey Ryuji. Welcome back.
[Even in the low light, even a few weeks later, You looks rough. Her face still bears the remnants of bad bruising, and her fingers on her left hand are still bandaged up. But more than that is the fact that the cheer and bubbly energy that she's had this whole time is... gone.]

[He almost hadn't recognized her. It was dark in the tent and the lackluster voice could have been a completely different person. Ryuji stands at the entrance, mouth hanging open in disbelief, until his anger rises in its place. He will enters, kneeling down halfway between her and the exit.]

She knows, of course, that Ryuji had a rough home life - most of them did - but she didn't know the details. Most of that had been confided to Akira long before she'd joined the Phantom Thieves. It's painful to watch (and must be even more painful to remember), and Haru can't just stand by and watch it play out.
It won't change what happened in the past, but as the man in Ryuji's memories begins to beat him, as Ryuji rolls up into a ball, she lunges forward and tries to make a grab for his father's arm. Is it even possible to stop a memory?
She'll try anyway.]
Stop that! Don't touch him!

"Man up and fight back already! You're worthless!"
He winds up for another kick, but there's the sound of a door opening and his mother's voice calls from the back.
"I'm sorry... I'll go to the store. Please, just go take your bath while the water is still warm."
It's like Haru's presence doesn't even register and the man turns, storming off to the back. There's the slam of a door and then silence. It's too quiet and Ryuji slowly starts to unfurl, sitting up and using the back of his sleeve to wipe away the blood at the corner of his mouth.]
...I didn't think memories were supposed to hurt.

So far, there's been no luck. It isn't like she had much luck, to begin with, and she doesn't have high hopes (idk if she ever has hopes). And so, when she does spot a familiar looking blonde head, A2 doesn't waste any time approaching him. ]

[ Next to her, Ryuji panics—and she feels her heart leap into her throat by proxy, thrumming wildly as an older man, his face oddly shadowed, enters the room and— ]
Stop! Hey! Stop it!
[ She screams, her voice breaking in distress, and throws herself at the man without thinking. But slamming into him does nothing—he doesn't budge a single inch, doesn't look at her, doesn't even react to her at all. The scene plays out before her as if she wasn't there at all: the man, his fists falling with ruthless brutality. His shouts. Ryuji, curled up on the floor.
Still, she tries to fight him, her hands shaking as she tries to shove him away, to do anything. ]

He can hear someone else here - Ann? Was that seriously Ann of all people? - yelling at him to stop, but his dad can't hear. He's not really here, after all. The shitlord.
Ryuji just has to grit his teeth and bear the punishment. He just as to wait. There's a brutal kick and his father spits out another stream of insults.
"Man up and fight back already! You're worthless!"
A door opens from the back as he winds up again and his mother's voice calls out, hoarse from tears, but desperate to save her son.
"I'm sorry... I'll go to the store. Please, just go take your bath while the water is still warm."
The man turns, ignoring Ann and storms off to the back. When he's gone, Ryuji relaxes and splays out on the ground spread eagle, staring up at the ceiling.]

The floor sways gently and intermittently underneath him, and he can catch faint wafts of expensive cigars and costly perfumes here and there, laughter and chatter drifting along the wood-paneled corridors. ...There's a table in the room and a few chairs surrounding it, and they are abnormally large.

Ryuji knows this place because, to him, it hasn't been all that long since he's been here. The endless maze of plush carpet and expensive food he's not allowed to enjoy, the snobby upper crust shits that barely give them the time of day, almost getting mushed into mouse-paste -- ah, how he hasn't missed this.
Back as a mouse is not the way Ryuji meant to spend today, but well, here he is. Thankfully Joker is right next to him, and he sits back on his furry little haunches and squeaks out a sigh.]

As if the shifting of environments isn't strange enough, they've wound up in somewhere rather...unnerving. The walls are dark and shadows are shifting all around them, and Prompto can't help the creeping feeling that this place he has stepped into is wholly unnatural. Could one really break a memory? Maybe, maybe not, but it wasn't like he wouldn't try. One minute he was calm, collected, watching the scene but his hand slowly forming into a fist, digging into his skin. The next, something gave way and he slammed into the man, attempting to pin him to the ground. The alcohol was probably halting the pain receptors of the man, who violently pushed Yu away with a kick. Still, he was distracted. Instead, he's all but throwing his weight at this man amidst his angry railing. Even if it's his dad (this man is his father? this absolute douchebag?), his priority is to protect a friend. They've raised worse threats for each other before.
So he elbows him, hard, right into a hairline fracture that seems to spread down his side. And it's strange—the man himself doesn't seem affected, not at all teetered off-balance, but he suddenly freezes in-place. Like he's stopped mid-frame. The memory starts to slow down, more cracks exposing across the floor, flecks of the walls seeming to crumble.
Yusuke stumbles back a step like he's bounced off a wall, and for a moment he's silent, still taking this in. Eventually, quietly, ]
