The room is small, and the privacy is a little lacking, but John's travelled in enough rural and underdeveloped places that he's just glad of having walls and a bathroom. He scans the space vaguely, trying to weigh up if there's any difference between the beds before stepping through to nose into the other rooms. One bathroom, one kitchen, one central space and two nooks with beds. It's definitely not the worst space he's been in.

Ducking under a beam he begins to undo his tactical vest, shrugs it off and unzips the waterproof jacket underneath to reveal a plain black t-shirt.

"So. It's not exactly homey, yet, but it's dry and has running water by the looks of it. I think I'd call that a win." John himself doesn't need much more than that. "If you have a preference pick a bed now."

They look the same to John. He supposes the choice is really how close you want to be to the front door.

That was a good question. All she had been raised to do was be a queen. She at least had the good fortune of marrying someone that seemed to be listening to her advice, if only a little.

Though it's clear that she woefully ill equipped for any specific trade.

"I know how to sew and embroider." She knows languages, but it's unlikely they are here. She could read and write, but somehow, she suspects that if she states that, he'd find that more funny than impressive. "My father was a king. What I can do, I learned from him. I don't think there is much demand for that."

[ Cain quickly makes a shushing noise, a finger up to his lips. Most people in the crowd are paying attention to Voss's speech, but still... No use looking for trouble here. That's better sought out in other places, for better reasons. The Natha, as suspicious as they are, are still their benefactors, and still have a hold over them.

But he winks. He doesn't mind talking about this; they just have to be careful. ]

If we're talking about special tailoring, you might be in luck. We were promised that all the wrinkles were being ironed out, weren't we? You'll probably have to prove yourself before they'll let you take any of the suits out for a spin, though.

Just 'cause we can't see it yet doesn't mean it isn't there.

( dutch knows a thing or two about how that goes. you think the man who raised you to be a cold, heartless killer is your enemy, but then it turns out he's been protecting you from something a lot worse all this time. life pulls these kinds of stunts. who knows what this place has in store for them yet? )

Sure, and just because we're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't actually out to get us. I still can't shoot something I can't see, though.

[ Which is a problem. It would be easier if he could just shoot something. ]

"Well, that's a good start! My sewing's more function than pretty, I'm sure it's the same for a lot of places. Maybe there's a place that would hire you to help make nice clothes, or blankets or something! Or -- "

Wait, she said father was a king. She's a princess? A slow, dawning realisation hits along with sense-memory of Rodney angrily making jokes about local princesses and priestesses.

After a beat, he recovers.

"Running a kingdom requires lots of useful skills. Like... diplomacy for dealing with people, math, managing staff. Those are all transferable to plenty of other things."

Things. Which he cannot quite place right now, because he's still processing the princess part.

[ Listen. He used the word suit instead of robot on purpose. He's being vague!! Just probably not really as vague as he should be okay fine.

He gives an exaggerated shrug. ]

I can be good. I excelled at sit and stay at school, and I've been working on perfecting my fetch technique.

[ This is what it feels like, okay. It feels like he's being treated like a puppy. ]

[ That earns a real laugh — and since they're going with the metaphor, Cain even gives Sheppard a wry look and makes a point of rocking up onto his tiptoes and patting the top of his head. He deserves it, for saying all of that. ]

Yes, yes, good boy. If I could put in a good word for you, I would... [ But he pauses, reminded of something. ] Ah, you didn't happen to be talking about this on the network earlier, did you? With airships and everything?

[ It's a coincidence, but... not that much of one, considering the topic and the notable interest in it. ]

[ Hey, hey mind the hair! He flinches away from the touch a little self-consciously, scowling at Cain as he fusses with his cowlicks to make sure they're still smoothed down.

The question, though, makes the scowl vanish away to curiosity. He'd had a distant suspicion, but Cain asking confirms it. ]

I did, and I guess you might be the person I was talking to.

[ Is this a charming reunion going on here? ]

( he's taking the words right from her mouth. )

I bet it'll come sooner or later. ( whatever it is. the thing for them to fight. )

[ He's not; you're welcome. ]

Well you should let me open it up sometime, 'cause I'd love to learn more about the alerting criteria for regular vs. scary people. I'll put a caffeine locator in there while I'm at it.

I don't know if I'm comfortable with you undressing it on the first date. You could at least take it out to dinner first and learn a few words of Ancient.

Well, if you work out what it is we need to point ourselves at you let me know.

[ He's now run out of something to drink, so he sort of pushes back up to his feet and gives a slightly exaggerated yet somehow still lazy half-bow. ]

[ That's him, for when you need something shot at. He tilts the bottle vaguely in his hand. ]

I'm gonna grab another of these. Want anything?

[ Since he's still nursing the bribes out of everyone. ]

( she leans back a little, stretching her legs out in front and crossing her ankles. )

Wouldn't mind another beer.

[ Very charming! None more charming could possibly be happening! Especially as Cain watches Sheppard fuss over his hair with amusement. ]

At your service. Things here have a way of working out like this, so I'm not too surprised, but it does make it easier. I was planning on trying to find you eventually, so this saves me some time.

[ No having to ask around and make subtle inquires or anything like that. This is much, much better. ]

Well, consider me found.

[ Leaving his hair alone finally he shoves his hands back into his pockets, offers a more genuine smile. ]

It's nice to meet you in person. This mean I get to be wrangled into test piloting?

[ Can he use 'I once flew a city sized ship with my mind' as leverage to fast track? Probably not tbh. ]

It doesn't seem very much like I need to be doing any wrangling...

[ He trails off, drawing it out, acting just a little reluctant. It's only a bit of teasing; he has no intention of withdrawing the offer, but it's just in Cain's nature to get in some good-natured teasing like this whenever he has the chance.

He relents quickly enough, though, holding up a hand before Sheppard can protest. ]

But yes, that's exactly what it means. Nice to meet you. We can see about making a trip back to the station once you're settled in. Any idea where that's going to be?

[ Aw come on, Cain! John's expression flips between puppyish distress and bright pleasure when he confirms. ]

Oh, you know, I'll have to make time in my extremely busy schedule.

[ Of doing exactly nothing. ]

I'll need to figure out a place to stay first, though. After that?

[ Whenever that is. ]

[ Yes, he's relenting on the teasing. The puppy dog eyes are getting to him. Only a little.

Only a little, tiny bit. Mostly because the immediate switch back to immediate happiness is so entertaining. ]

I you need help with a place to stay, I can lend a hand with that, too, though. As long as it's in Olympia?

[ He's heard no such thing. ]

Does this mean we'll be neighbours?

[ Will he see you there in Olympia, friend? Will you give him a tour or something? He can think up more obnoxious friend tasks and things to rope you into, don't you worry. ]

[ He will indeed give a tour and be ready and willing to be roped into obnoxious friend tasks. And drag John along on errands of his own. Including pulling John into his own fair share of trouble. That's what friends are for! ]
