Memories can be difficult things to keep hold of.

[He remembers next to nothing of his own parents, only that they had lived once. His sister, and the nieces and nephews for whom he had thieved the bread, he can recall only in dim glimpses, their faces and voices effaced by the long years. But he has no need to remember any of them presently, his life having begun anew in his middle age, his soul having been reborn.

Yet he sympathizes with the distraught young woman nonetheless. Every day Cosette seems farther away from him, her bright light dimming by slow degrees to a resident of the past. In retaliation against time he makes her his reason to forge ahead in this strange land, in the hope that she will awaken and join him in the future. Yet until she does, it is a terribly lonely path.]

You might ask your mother to tell stories of him, that you may better preserve those memories. You have these photographs too, no?

[He does not realize, of course, that the memories captured in the photographs will fade before long, reverting to ordinary pictures of the girl holding them.]
