He has since returned to stasis, but he had others from his world tell him of events that he had not witnessed, deeds that he himself supposedly carried out that he had never done. Between himself and the others, there was enough the same, and yet enough different that he could only conclude that there were at least two versions of his home.

I see no reason why both ideas could not be possible. But of course, your idea invites a dozen more questions and then some. Why collect us if not to save us? And why turn us loose upon the planet’s surface? Why bother waking us from stasis at all?
