Because the mountains of Destiny Islands aren’t even nearly high enough for that, also because he really, really despises feeling as cold as he does right now.
He nods, a little surprised that Axel is bringing the Garden so casually… but it’s a pleasant surprise, really.
“On the Islands we get them before harvest season begins. The storms are a two-edged sword that way… they bring the rain that’s needed to make the crops grow, but the winds are so brutal that they can also destroy the fields if we are unlucky.”
There are other ways to survive on the Islands – fish is plentiful, so the loss of crops never has meant starvation, at least not in Riku’s memory (but he remembers his mother’s tight face during one particularly bad season when he had been younger; the calculations his parent’s had had to make, the discussions about how to protect crops from a similar disaster in the year following…)
He shakes his head sharply, then flinches slightly when Axel claps his shoulder – not because it’s Axel touching him; he’s just not expected the contact. As for trust, well…
“I trust you to be unpredictable.”
To be self-serving in one second and then bordering idiotically self-sacrificial in the next… that’s one trait of Axel’s that certainly impressed itself on Riku. But yea, he admits the chance that Axel will come at him with snow while the weather is like this is low enough.
