He trusts 76 to warn him if he hadn't noticed they were about to be jumped or hit by debris, but that's no reason not to pay attention himself.

John has idly noticed that 76 tends to just let him talk and not give away much. Which is not inherently a bad thing, he doesn't give off an air of someone about to snap and tell him the ritual will be complete with the shedding of innocent blood, but John still likes to have a better idea of where people stand.
