In some ways, it’s hard to believe he’s doing this.
Ever since Heero had stolen his parts in that first bit of time on Earth, when he’d been helping him and all, Duo had been loathe to let anyone other than himself or the Sweepers so much as go near his mobile suit. Up on Thesa it had been a little easier, knowing that the people who wanted to help were merely curious about this gigantic metal fighting machine than anything else. Can’t steal something that has been customized and you don’t know how to use anyway.
But actually allowing another person who knows something (even if it’s not exactly what is needed for Deathscythe) – is an entirely different thing to tackle mentally. There’s so much between himself and Mika that’s never been fully discussed, put in to words or anything further than a nod or grunt of understanding, a look that said one knew what the other meant even if they hadn’t finished. They were so very alike in so many ways, and yet disparate in so many others.
Being able to rely on someone is nice, almost reminds him of being back with the gang in the streets of L2, just a different gang of faces. And yet at times it comes with the sinking realization that either of them could just poof and be back in stasis at any point. Death was as possible here as it was anywhere else in Earth and space, and now that giant dragons had shown up to show them just how possible… a bit of Duo is trying desperately to sink back in to being mostly alone and not getting too attached. An old survival tactic, to be sure, something he’d learned the terribly hard way not only once, but twice.. and something he’s pushing through at the moment.
Until anyone else from his Universe shows up, not talking with anyone for anything other than a vapid conversation or two would be absolutely maddening.
And lonely – something he’s avoiding as he touches the mobile suit down in a deserted field in Edrathe, opening the cockpit up as soon as he’s powered down his systems, taking his time to sit down and dangle his feet over the edge and enjoy the view in the meantime.
.. After all, it’s not Nadril. Which just meant vast white expanses.
