[ A shrug. ]

Our world was severed from the rest of the universe for hundreds of years by a wormhole collapse that bathed our planet in radiation. A population of no more fifty thousand settlers, suddenly subject to grotesque and dangerous mutations - we came to fear genetic difference as a threat to our continued existence. So no. The genetically different were not our heroes.
