i. market district;
[He wasn’t nearby when the explosion had shook the market district, though panic spreads quickly, and the aftermath of such an event is impossible to ignore. Even more so for Ardyn, being part of the royal guard — being delegated orders to provide aid and investigate, it is his own curiosities that truly drive him farther into the area to assist. Granted, his form of “assistance” might be lacking compared to those who are rushing to and fro, enveloped in a frantic need of wanting to help. Instead, it’s easier for him remain calm, more unaffected, eyes taking in the area with a sense of detachment that’s perhaps less than appropriate for the situation at hand. If you need to talk to him, he’s easy enough to spot in the crowd. More specifically, a few things that take place are:
A.) An elderly man, a vendor whose wares had been toppled over completely in the explosion, requires help retrieving his goods now strewn all about the street. Textiles and clothing of various colors, one of which seems to hang high up, caught on the corner of a rooftop of a nearby building. It billows, not unlike a flag flying in the breeze. Ardyn cranes his head up to look at it. Then he says, to the person closest to him:]
Be so kind as to retrieve that for me, will you? I’ve already my hands full.
[And so it seems he does, various unravelled yards of cloth hanging over his arm.
B.) There are, of course, looters. As to be expected, people who would take advantage of tragedy for their own benefit, and the ironic part is that Ardyn generally would not care. And yet there are a couple of young men who are being so bold as to do so right in front of him — only down the street, where they appear to be scrounging around another vendor’s (not currently present) property: an array of decorative items, small enough to be thrown into a bag and carried off nonchalantly. Covered in filigree and adorned with precious gems. Certainly possessing high enough market value to sell for a quick profit.
It’s easy enough for Ardyn to close the distance, of course. A flash of magic, sword in his hand, and suddenly he’s warped from where he was standing to directly in front of one of the men — blade pressed up against his throat. The other looter freezes in shock, mid-crouch, in the midst of picking up a shiny bauble to steal.
The smile Ardyn gives them is… amused, but a little disconcerting.]
At least wait until the cover of night like proper thieves.
[If the second man is slowly reaching for a dagger at his hip, there’s zero indication of Ardyn either noticing or caring. What do you do, passerby?]
ii. red light district;
[Now it’s time for an investigation proper, and who says that all manner of secrets and rumors do not eventually make their way to the red light district? This is where you can find Ardyn tonight, skulking through alleyways and hovering near the edges of crowds, sometimes asking around, sometimes not. He is, of course, dressed in plain clothes, a hundred times more subdued than his usual tastes. No guard uniform, no outfit from Eos to turn any heads. Only Ardyn, looking like a commoner, hair tied back. His only indulgence is a maroon scarf, hanging loosely around his neck.
He is absolutely drawn to the sight of individuals speaking in hushed whispers, for often times they are not being as discreet as they believe. This time, it’s two women, huddled in an darkened alleyway, and Ardyn eyes them from where he stands. He catches something about “Wyver”, but will have to draw closer to hear anything more.
Are you a fellow refugee wanting to unravel this mystery further? Join him in figuring out a creative way to move closer without drawing any unwanted attentions. The women do seem to be on the lookout for anyone snooping around. Alternately, he may speak to you first, muttering:]
Just how inconspicuous can you be?
iii. wildcard;
[Open for future threads, or any prompts that you’d prefer to play out if none of these work! I can be found ataurajen to plot further if you’d like!]

[None other than Ardyn himself, though no one should ever misconstrue his intentions as born of anything other than his own amusement, or some other underlying cause. Helping for the sake of helping is something that should be delegated to others instead.
He returns his attentions to the thief, telling him to show him his arms and hands. A good enough starting point to begin to look for any markings that might reveal a deeper association with what's happened, though Ardyn is willing to bet that he's merely what he appears to be -- a thief.
A thief that panics easily, apparently.
Foolish or otherwise, the blade pressed against his throat still isn't enough to keep him held in place. After Ardyn makes the request, he's silent for a moment, and it's difficult to tell if his hesitation is from knowing that he'll be turned into the guard, or something else.
And so what does he do? The man turns and bolts as fast as his legs can take him, right from under Ardyn's blade. Ardyn actually... laughs, saying to Haru (but loud enough for the thief to hear):] It looks like we have a chase on our hands, Haru!
no subject
Haru can't judge. She's not one for senseless violence, but these two need an attitude adjustment.]
Well, that's—
[And there he goes!]
...oh, no you don't...!
[A chase, indeed.
Haru darts after him, hefting up her axe to rest on her shoulder so that she doesn't accidentally whack somebody with it (wouldn't that be a mess?) as she begins her pursuit. Maybe they have more important things to worry about right now, but if this guy is running after a simple request like that -
Well, maybe there's something there they need to find.
The unconscious one is just left to lie there on the streets, though. Oops.]
no subject
But goodness, does Ardyn not want to exert himself by running. He watches as Haru darts off with that big ol' axe slung over her shoulder, and he actually finds it a humorous sight. Still, he won't be such an asshole (today) to not lend aid.
She'll catch the sound of strange magic (like crystal shattering), heralding his warp. He disappears and reappears right next to her with a grin, commenting:]
I'll cut him off up ahead. Don't let him get away, now!
[And with that helpful(?) bit of advice, Ardyn tosses his sword through the air, aiming at the top of a roof, and disappears after it in a flash of red magic. Up on the roof he goes, a nice little shortcut.]
no subject
Either way, Haru's focus is on the man who's trying to escape. Though - that focus is broken by the surprise of him suddenly teleporting, and she only has a moment to nod and be quietly jealous of the fact that he can do such a thing before he's gone again.
She'll have to ask him about that, later.
For now, her job is to make sure the thief doesn't double back. Up ahead, Ardyn said, which means cutting off any avenue of escape if what she needs to do. If she can corral him into somewhere he won't be able to run left or right, they can trap him.
So that's what she tries to do - herd him into an alley connecting one street to another.
It should be easy enough for him to drop down from the roof there. She thinks, anyway.]
no subject
That works for him, because if he can make it to the next street, he can turn a corner sharply and lose sight of her. Maybe disappear altogether. It's an easy escape, and he thinks he's made it-
Until there's, suddenly, Ardyn materializing right in front of him. The thief practically crashes into him, bouncing off and landing on his ass. He tries to scramble to his feet, to turn around and head the other way, but Haru will probably be right there to meet him.]
no subject
It slows her down just long enough for him to disappear around the corner -
But she sees which corner her goes down, and so she hurries after him. By the time he arrives, the man is turning on his heel and trying to run back out -
But she's there with just enough time to stop him, and she slams her axe down to cut his path off.]
Running is futile! We've caught you already.
no subject
Nowhere to run now.
Ardyn steps forward, closing the distance.]
Very good, Haru. Shall we be kind enough to escort him to the rest of the guard? Or shall we knock him out first, much like his friend?
[A thinly veiled threat.]
no subject
[Also a thinly veiled threat.
Apparently the two threats are something the man takes note of, because he glances uneasily between the two of them before his shoulders slump in what seems to be resignation.
"Y'won't have to knock me out... but don't ya have better things to be doing with your time?"]
no subject
[Ardyn looks amused, though his sword is not being lowered by any means. Instead the pointed end of his blade prods at the thief’s back (not enough to hurt, but enough to startle), so that he speaks more readily.]
And what better things should we be doing? Please share.
no subject
Haru raises an eyebrow.]
And so we ought to leave you and your cohorts free to simply take while everyone else is struggling to get back on their feet?
no subject
But Haru speaks first, and he rather agrees with it -- on a strictly empirical level. Morality is a tricky thing for him these days.]
Exactly that. You're not much better than a rat, scurrying about and picking up what doesn't belong to you. Does the state of your pride not cry foul at the very thought? Or have you no dignity left in those bones of yours?
[He shoves the man forward with an elbow.]
But if you think we should be spending our time more effectively, you can tell it to the other guards. Walk.
no subject
Honestly...
[She shakes her head as they march their erstwhile captive to the nearest guardstation.]
That could have been so much simpler than it was.
no subject
[At least the path back is relatively straightforward, and the building is really not all that far away to begin with.]
To expect that anything might be straightforward for us is little more than wishful thinking. At least it keeps us busy, and mildly fends off boredom.
[The latter of which is the most offensive.
In any case, it doesn't take long for them to shuffle the thief off towards the guardstation, and an equally less amount of time to explain the situation. Once they're through with that, it's time to go find the one KO'd on the ground that they had left prior.]
Did you always have that axe?
no subject
[Haru may or may not have an interest in joining the Guard... although that interest won't really solidify until they get to Wyver. Ah, well. It'll give her something to badger him about for next month's threads.
But, right, back to that unconscious would-be thief... hopefully he'll still be there. When they get close enough they'll see that some kind, unsuspecting soul is trying to wake him up with smelling salts, but for now they're far enough away that they'll be oblivious to those shenanigans.]
My axe? Ah... no. It's something of a recent acquisition. [Along with her second axe and her grenade launcher... look, a girl's gotta have priorities.] Truthfully, I feel a little better having it. It's come in handy.
