[He definitely would have. He's used to opening doors with hacking or else blowing them up or making Groot tear them down. It's not that he can't just unlock a damn door stealthily, it's just that stealth isn't his thing.

Also the average locking mechanism is usually situated at a point that is uncomfortably taller than he is.

But for all that he has a devil may care attitude about how amazing he is on his own and everyone should be delighted to have him in between protests of how he has to do everything, Rocket is grateful as they all slide into their individual roles. He couldn't have done this as easily with anyone else- and he's done a lot of these little quests with a lot of random people to know that for a fact.

Gamora takes point and he slides in beside her. The light is only bright enough that the likelihood of missing a step is minimized, but not so bright that it offers much comfort about what they're walking into. Fortunately, Rocket's nightvision is superb.]

Whatever this is, he buried it deep. [The fur on the back of his neck bristles and a low growl emanates from him as he steps forward, taking the stairs on all fours to keep from having to awkwardly hop.]

[ Peter's darkvision, on the other hand, isn't so great, which is why he reaches for the trigger behind his ear. His helmet forms around his head in a flash of blue light, and he blinks as the systems engage. After that, his steps are more certain. ]

Guess no one thought to install a light in here, huh?

[ Murmured, because this is still technically a stealth mission. And since this is a stealth mission, Peter should probably just keep his mouth shut, but apparently nothing is sacred when it comes to snide remarks. ]

I mean, if nothing else, we could probably get this Evras guy on some kinda safety code violation.

Safety code? [It's an unfamiliar phrase that startles a question out of Mantis; she's like to "get this Evras guy" just as much as anyone else here. While she's halfway certain that Peter's making some sort of odd throwaway comment (because he does that a lot) she has to ask.

It's probably a dumb question.] Why so dark? A secret can hide behind a locked door with or without a light.

Maybe whatever he's keepin' down here don't like lights too much.

[The officials probably use lanterns or whatever when they come down here to make it easier, but this seems like an extra precaution to keep wayward research assistants from just wandering down here. Who's gonna be stupid enough to risk a broken neck just out of curiosity?

[ Modifications sure come in handy when everything is absurdly dark. She keeps close behind Rocket, taking the steps near-silently as she peers around for any potential threats. ]

I thought the point here was to be as subtle as possible.
