What: Questing time
When: Early February
Where: Outskirts of Olympia
Warning(s): Violence, maybe??
[Go out and bring back some deserters, they said. Here, have some nifty crystals to help you, they said, they may be of help on your journey. Yeah, yeah, whatever. Shura knows better than to just trust tools like this, but it'd be more of a drag to refuse them than to accept, so she'll take them, doling the crystals out to Rin and Mephisto once outside of the city.]
Is there really somethin' out there that's gonna be big enough to need usin' these things? Seems a little overkill to me.

[Which he very much learned the hard way-- and is going to very pointedly not mention any specifics about why he knows this!!]
[But for his part, Mephisto is clearly ready to trick some deserters into coming back into Olympia, seeing as he's dressed in an outfit rather similar to those worn by people who work in the temple of Thesa. It'd just seem suspicious if a bunch of randos started asking them to come back to Olympia, after all!]
no subject
I mean, with all three of us, it can't be that hard... [ He says, albeit a bit absentmindedly. Even just he and Yukio (plus Shura) had been able to take care of Hachiro... so he has to side with Shura on this one. ] Maybe we won't even run into anything that bad?
[ It's good to have a positive mindset after all! Even if he is, compared to Mephisto, looking quite ill prepared for this quest with his trademark casual attitude and outfit. ]
no subject
[Crystal or no crystal, that was going to be a way bigger job than what they had signed up for?? Shura's tired of doing work higher than her pay grade.
But thinking about it, if they could infuse crystals with power, then it might be possible to infuse Fang with power, and Shura has to keep that in mind, just in case. Hopefully, Rin would be right and they wouldn't run into anything that they couldn't take out with brute strength alone.]
Oi, did you have anything to do with these things?
[She asks Mephisto, turning the crystal between her fingertips. Maybe it was worth a shot just to play with it once or twice...]
no subject
[He has his own crystal in hand, holding it tightly as instructed to allow the power to activate. He's already tested it a few times since they've been walking, given the effects of it were rather subtle. But it certainly seems to be working.]
Hm? Not at all, actually. Though I'll admit, having the opportunity to see how these worked was one of my motivations for coming out here! This world's magic is still rather new to me, after all.
no subject
[ They haven't even been tested? Isn't that kind of...dangerous? Also, he's not super sure this little gem alone is gonna be able to replace the Kurikara as a weapon. But he does remember the little instructions that Shura had relayed to him, lagging behind the other two as they walked. ]
Or if they even work??
[ He'll just. Subtly reach out to press the gem into the back of Mephisto's shoulder... ]
no subject
[Quiet and subtle and everything that Rin isn't, but hey, maybe between Shura and Mephisto, they could stay off the radar for a while yet--
Or maybe not, not with the way Rin's trying to touch Mephisto with the crystal. Should she stop him?
Nah. She'll let him learn this lesson the hard way.]
no subject
[Yep. Stupid hair curl and all. Enjoy the new view from above?? Mephisto hasn't noticed yet, just brushing his shoulder with a hand.]
Now what's the fun in that? Don't you think it would be better to test them now, in case they could come in handy? If there are side effects, we should learn to prepare for them!
no subject
While he'd expected something to happen, he didn't think it would be as fast as this. He barely takes note of whatever Mephisto and Shura are saying because he's focusing on looking at his now weirdly long hands, immaturely biting his lip to keep laughs from bubbling out. ]
Y-Yeah, maybe we should test 'em out.
[ He says, in a voice that is eerily similar to Mephisto's, which only causes him to laugh more. What was that about the person who you're imitating seeing you, and that breaking the illusion? Yeah, he doesn't remember that footnote. Too busy mockingly stroking his new goatee.
Then, overdramatically, like the way Mephisto always talks (in Rin's opinion): ] Y'know, all like, eins, zwei, drei!!
[ Miraculously, he pronounces two out of three of them right. ]
no subject
Quit it, Rin. That's not a toy.
[but really, gj on getting two out of three right. Shura's half-impressed.]
no subject
[And of course, he's gonna turn around.]
--was that voice supposed to be me!?
[Of course, he's only getting a glance before the illusion shatters--]
no subject
[ His obnoxious and otherwise childish laughter at the prank is interrupted once Mephisto turns around, the pain of the illusion breaking instantaneous. It hurts, like a sharp shock to his whole body, and it's enough to make him yelp and have his tail bristle up like a cat's - that is, before he's reverted back to his regular self at his regular height.
The pain lingers like static, and he shakes his head back and forth as if to try and wear it off. ]
What gives? It wears off that easily?
no subject
Toldya not to fool around with it!
[Screw you dumb boys, Shura's going to just take the lead and start up the path to where the deserters were supposedly hiding. They could distract each other with their new toys as much as they wanted, but Shura had some drinking to do, and she couldn't do that until this job was done.]
But it was a pretty good copy. Dunno how much use it'll be if we're comin' up on monsters, but maybe it'll be useful.
no subject
[Such a fragile ego on this guy...]
I suppose it's the sort that wears off when the target sees the copy? Perhaps it could be used to try and convince the deserters to cooperate, if they think one of their own agrees to come... though if we're lucky, it won't come down to that.
[Since, uh. They'd have to knock out one of them to steal their place. And either kidnap them or leave them behind. 2spooky.]
no subject
Lame... ya gotta touch the person with it too, so it's way too complicated. [ He's not well known for his grace or stealth, after all, nor is he for being a great liar. ] And I ain't exactly the actin' type...
[ Hopefully one of his two way smarter partners would come up with a good solution, since he is clearly the brawn of this mission. ]
I'll just help protect you guys, unless we gotta use it...besides, don't adults usually trust older people?
no subject
[She casts a glance back to Rin over her shoulder, vaguely relieved that he seemed to have lost interest in the stupid crystal.]
If they can't make it back on their own two feet, we'll need you to be able to carry them.
[there's your job rin!! Maybe it'd be a good boost to his self esteem. Maybe they'd find a cute girl or something. Who knew. It's going to be at least another hour's hike to get to the spot, but at least it'll probably be pretty clear until they get there??]
no subject
[The sarcasm is especially thick -- if only since he doesn't think Rin would realize it's sarcasm otherwise, and he'd probably just gross him out if he thought Mephisto was complimenting him--]
[But hmm, that's strange. He's been activating his own crystal on and off since they left, watching the predictive paths of sound moving around them... and right now, it looks like a small something is about 20 seconds away from climbing Okumura-kun like a tree. A few somethings, actually-- three, perhaps? Should he he say something?]
[...nah. This little trip could be a good excuse to see where Rin's at in his training. He's probably be slacking off without the threat of the Order hanging over his head, and that just wouldn't do!]
no subject
Just as Mephisto predicts, three little gubbins zip around his limbs and torso, making their little chirping noises and obviously attracted to the shining gem in his left hand. Not one to be well versed in zoology (but being well versed in being distracted), he just blinks at them, immediately thinking that they are cute... he's always had a soft spot for animals, after all. ]
Whoa, hey there... [ One crawls up to the hand that's holding his little crystal, which he, of course, tries to keep his hand on, despite it's big eyes and how it's pawing at his hand to get him to hand it over. While he's distracted, he keeps walking, cooing to the creatures: ] Y'know, ya can't have this -
[ They don't seem to happy with his denial, so they start biting him, to which he stops in his tracks and drops the gem out of surprise - and of course, the three gubbins are all too happy to make away with. ]
What - hey, that's mine!!!
[ The bar is lowered even more for him on this day since he just got outsmarted by three tree climbers, but at least he has half the mind to chase after them towards the trees immediately rather than linger around. At least his two parents in law will get a chance to have some quality time together!!! ]
no subject
[gdit mephisto this is not how you work on a team?? Besides, considering how he was careless enough to lose his memories for a bit because he wasn't paying attention to the minnus, he didn't have much room to taunt Rin.
Shura doesn't catch the gubbins approaching Rin, not until he starts talking to them. She's hoping that she can take her eyes off of Rin without him getting into trouble, but apparently that was a mistake??]
Rin--
[was he really getting outsmarted by little lemur things seriously
But hell no, Shura's not going to stick around with Mephisto, setting off after Rin as he chases the gubbins. Besides, Rin probably would need help getting his stupid crystal back. Besides, maybe should could test out her stupid crystal. If she could just catch one, she could probably stun the others as well.]
no subject
[Mephisto to just stops and watches them go tbh. Sighs. Shakes his head... then casually walks off in their direction, not really concerned or anything. But it might make for a funny show??]
no subject
At least, before the one in possession of the gem starts climbing a tree, the other two scurrying about his feet as if he had something else to offer. ]
Rrgghh, why?! [ Why does he have to climb this, why is this happening to him, he's a good person? Grumbling, he forces himself to start climbing the tree, despite the fact that he is leagues slower than the gubbins, and the distance between them only seems to grow the longer he takes climbing. ] Can't ya like, slow it down or something?! It's gonna get away!!!
[ He's just gonna. Ignore the fact that this is probably hilarious to Mephisto, because he can't get distracted by being pissed off just yet. ]
no subject
It'd probably be faster if Shura tried climbing the tree herself, but Rin's already scaling the tree in pursuit of the stupid little rodent.]
Tch--what a pain!
[But... she may as well try the stupid crystal. What could it hurt? She reaches into her pocket to touch the crystal and activate it, and then it's time to dive after the gubbin straggling behind as it tries to scale the tree after its little friends. Lucky her--she snags it by the tail and it lets out a loud squeal, flailing as it tries to escape her grasp. The crystal works--the other two gubbins are rendered temporarily immobile and seem absolutely baffled at what could be causing the problem.]
Hurry up!
[To Rin, who she doesn't think wants her to kill the little bastards. She'd be snapping its neck, otherwise. It'd be a lot easier that way.]
no subject
[But mostly, it's just funny.]
[Still, that's odd... he's activated his own crystal again and can see a strange force of sound that looks like it'll run right through the tree in about 30 seconds. Should he...? Nah, it should be fine. For all that he's a condescending asshole, he has Faithβ’ in Rin's ability not to get killed and Shura's ability to take care of things.]
[Of course, from Rin's vantage point, he's going to see what's actually coming this way from just over the hill. Approaching from the distance is a rather large turo, a number of arrows stuck in its hide and looking pretty damn pissed about it.]
[And it's definitely charging straight for the tree that Rin happens to be in.]
no subject
Shura - get out of the way!!
[ His yell would seemingly come from nowhere from her point of view, but from where he's perched in the tree, he barely has enough time to shout his warning before the beast collides with the tree with a resounding crack, taking him with it. The impact is painful, no doubt, probably would have knocked anyone without such a thick skull out cold, and the tree is easily ripped up from the roots and tossed aside by a single angry thrash of the turo's head before continuing to charge.
Rin's agile enough to have rolled out of the tree and in front of the beast as per his reckless nature - and he takes to trying to stop it's charge by using brute force - like, 1v1, pushing back against it's lowered forehead using his bare hands. He's strong, but he's not that strong, so he is slowly getting skidded backwards due to the poor footing, not to mention that the creature is obviously pissed that something so much smaller than it is trying to stop it. Of course, he can only keep up a brute force match for so long, just based on how his feet stumble clumsily as they drag through the soft earth, and if he wasn't so focused on not getting trampled, he'd be looking to Shura or Mephisto to redirect the beast's anger somewhere else.
Since the thought of slaying this beast definitely doesn't cross his mind. ]
no subject
Shura has to roll for cover when the tree comes crashing down, and so it'll take her a second to understand just what reckless thing Rin's done. Rin. Even someone like Rin was going to struggle against a beast like this when it was angry and hurt. Shura swears. What was he planning on doing, trying to talk it out of its rage? This wasn't a demon...
Killing the animal might not be on Rin's mind, but it's the easiest and quickest option Shura sees. And if Rin can keep the business end of the Turo busy, then she can take care of the dirty work.]
Keep it still, Rin!
[Jumping leaping from ground to the fallen tree is easy; leaping on to the back of the Turo while drawing Fang and staying on it is a little more difficult. But she doesn't need to stay on it long, only long enough to stab Fang through the beast's neck. Fang may not be as effective as it used to be, but it's still more than capable of piercing through the Turo's hide when Shura thrusts the blade down. Now it was just a matter of not getting thrown off or impaled by the horns.]
no subject
[Shura manages to get Fang pierced through the Turo's skin, but with the way the Turo begins to thrash around the moment she's atop it, she might not get a very clean hit. The horns on its head are mostly being kept under control by Rin's grip on the beast, but being bucked off is a very real possibility.]
[But Turo are more than just giant bull-looking monsters. They're burrowing creatures, capable of digging through large chunks of earth to make caves for themselves. And in a moment of clarity, it decides that charging forward won't do any good to release it from Rin's grip. But if it were to suddenly dig down into the earth just a little, it could life up from below and impale Rin on one of its large tusks--]
[Or at least, that's what it looks like it's going to do, based on what the crystal shows Mephisto. But it's not going to get that far.]
[Proving that he is indeed a Team Playerβ’, he appears in a poof behind Rin with a single hand held out just above Rin's head. As he tightens it into a fist, the Turo cries out-- but then stops moving all together, seemingly frozen in place.]
[...of course, he's not actually stopping time here. It's being physically held in place with his powers, still twitching and shaking as it tries to fight against his hold. Which is actually taking a lot more effort than he'd like to admit-- it even shows in his voice, which comes out notably strained.]
We really can't take you anywhere without you getting into trouble, can we? [DEMEANING HEADPAT WITH HIS FREEHAND deal with it.] Shall I hold it still while Kirigakure-san finishes it off? Or shall we simply send it on its way?
no subject
But at least he doesn't have to wallow in it for too long, given that the enormous strain on his body is suddenly lifted once Mephisto steps in. He even stumbles a little with the abrupt loss of force against him, regaining his balance just in time to feel that Extremely Demeaning head pat. Not that he will respond with a quip, too focused on trying to save the beast from it's supposed doom: ]
Wait, don't kill it! It's hurt.
[ Which is probably why it was mad, and it didn't deserve to die over just that. Maybe his two companions would see him as naive for this behavior, but Rin doesn't waste time hopping up there to join Shura, not afraid to clamber to onto it's back - where the arrows are. ]
S'probably just scared because it was being hunted. Maybe if we pull these out...
[ He's unsure of how to go about it, obviously hesitating because he doesn't want to hurt it any further. Of course, he's also acting under the assumption that Shura will agree with him, and that Mephisto can handle holding the beast for that long - both of which may or may not be true. Not that he seems to notice what the other two are doing, too busy trying to figure out a way to remove the weapons without hurting it. ]
no subject
Oi, what are you doing?
[In spite of her best judgment, Shura isn't going for the kill, looking over her shoulder at Rin. If she could see an arrow stuck in a vital spot, she could justify finishing it off as a mercy kill, but she doesn't have a great view.]
Mephisto, how long can you hold this thing?
[So maybe she was getting soft. Fine, if they could help it, they could try. But if they couldn't, it'd be best to end it painlessly as possible for the beast.]
no subject
[As much as he doesn't want to admit it, Mephisto hasn't tested this particular ability to its extent -- it's not like he ever made much use of it.]
I can only guarantee the next two minutes... but it may last as long as five.
If you're set on saving it, you best be quick about it.
no subject
[ As soon as Mephisto stops talking, he gets to work, obviously in a hurry. Two minutes is not a terribly long time, so he wants to work quickly - otherwise who knows what will happen to this creature. It's not too hard to pluck out the arrows (not for him, at least), but it does get a bit harder once the beast notices what he's doing. It's not exactly a pleasant feeling to have weapons ripped out of it's hide, after all.
He keeps his collection of bloody arrows in his left hand while his right clings onto the hide so he doesn't slip off the beast - maneuvering around best he could given the circumstance. It does seem like there are quite a lot of arrows though, too much to pull out by himself in two minutes and maybe even too much for two people working on it simultaneously. Despite that, he shows no sign of starting to climb off the beast, even as the two minute mark gets nearer and nearer, even pausing to struggle with an arrow that seems to be stuck particularly deep.
At least if Mephisto lets go (accidentally or intentionally) he has a good grip??? Otherwise his bleeding heart is going to keep him up here in the spite of his own safety. ]
no subject
Just what kinda plan do you have in mind, Rin?
[So maybe she's sounding just a little grouchy... She didn't want him to lose that soft side he had, but there was a point when it just wasn't safe or practical to take pity on every single creature out there.]
no subject
Your flames should work. Let off enough of them, and it should flee in the opposite direction once I let go.
That should be easy enough, yes?
[ :') ]
no subject
[ He finally gets the arrow out, staggering for a moment. It's doubly troubling because he doesn't have an answer for either of his mentors, just pursing his lips guiltily. ]
I can't exactly...use 'em right now. [ His control was better, definitely, candle trick mastered and everything, but there was only so much he could use without unsheathing the Kurikara, which he hadn't worked as much on as of late, given the chaotic state of Wyver. ] And I thought we'd just let it run off or somethin' after we finished...
[ Maybe if he follows up with that second bit, it won't leave room for Mephisto to chew him out? And personally he didn't see a problem in just letting it run off, how hard could it be for them to stay out of the way? Right? It seems totally plausible to him. ]
no subject
If we don't find a way to scare it back where it came from, it's just gonna continue charging up the path we're goin'. It may end up finding the people we're lookin' for before we do. [And with the possibility that they were injured, it could easily kill one of them in its rage. There was no guarantee it wouldn't run right back into the hunters, but if it was lucky, it'd find its herd and nurse its wounds.]
If you can't draw Kurikara, I may have to kill it just to stop it from hurting someone else.
1/2
[But more importantly, yelling--]
You can't what!?
cw: gore :')
[Or they might not.]
[Without thinking, he reacts -- quickly snapping his fingers and teleporting both of them safely off the Turo's back and onto the grass roughly 20 feet away -- as far as he can send them on the fly (though it might not be the most graceful landing).]
[But Mephisto really wasn't as strong as he used to be -- or at least, he certainly lacked stamina. Just holding that Turo in place like that exhausted him, and while he had the strength to get the two of them out of harm's way... he didn't really think about what he was going to do. And unlike the two of them, he was still standing directly in front of it.]
[There's some attempt at scrambling away, but it's in vain, with Mephisto only barely able to move off the ground after exhausting himself. And with a swing of its head, the Turo scoops Mephisto up into the air with its horns, and impales him through the stomach upon them.]
[It might not be immediately obvious what happened, given just how quickly it all played out. Mephisto himself doesn't even cry out, in too much shock to register the pain. But he does realize he has no choice but to hold on, because the Turo is going to start trying to charge away, and falling off means being trampled underfoot.]
no subject
H...Holy shit... [ Mephisto's a demon, so he can heal from that, right? Rin's pretty sure he could heal from something like that, and he's only half, so he has to believe in the moment that the other would be okay, because otherwise, the cold feeling of dread that just washed over him might be there to stay. Just because he knows he can (probably) heal from a wound like that doesn't make seeing it any more shocking or unsettling; it's never exactly enjoyable seeing other people bleeding and in pain, especially when it's arguably his fault.
Either way, he is quick to act without thinking (as usual), scrambling out of the dirt and looking wildly around for Shura while he starts his sprint after the turo. He'd love to stick around and formulate a plan with the other, since she probably has a way better idea of what to do, but he knows that it's a race to catch up with the beast at this point. ] Uh -
We gotta get 'em off of there!!
[ Y'know, somehow?! What's going through his mind is just 1) catch up 2) climb up there 3) somehow pull him off, since that's the easiest point A to point B plan of action that doesn't require offing anyone. ]
no subject
If they're lucky, she might be able to knock the creature out instead of just straight up killing it. If they were incredibly lucky. She didn't have a lot of practice on mundane animals, but if she could hit a pressure point one of its front legs and temporarily paralyze the limb, then it'd have trouble both running and digging itself an escape hole. And she didn't have to completely catch up with it to do so, just close enough for a good shot--]
Rin, I'm gonna to try an' stop it. Get ready to cut off that horn if you have to!
[The alternative of pulling Mephisto off was also workable since he was a demon and (probably) wasn't going to die from this, but Shura isn't going to give him the chance. Using his flames would probably make cutting the horn easier, and hopefully Rin would at least try that option if he had the chance. Tearing off after the animal is taking a lot out of her, but it's tired and starting to slow. Once she's close enough, she just has to hope when she flings the knife that it hits the right point on the turo. And if it doesn't land on the first throw, she can always throw another one!]]
no subject
[As it is, he's essentially unconscious, with only enough wit about him to keep hold of the horn and keep from sliding any further onto it -- or falling off and being hurt even worse. But it's probably not a good sign to see him otherwise hanging limply over the creature, expression completely dazed.]
[But as for the Turo, well-- it doesn't really like any of this, and at some point swings its head to try and knock Mephisto off. But it's distracted by the sight of Rin and Shura catching up to it. And while the first knife only manages to knick the skin on it's hind leg, a second will hit right at the joint of a forelimb, causing it to stumble and fall.]
[They're only going to get a few seconds worth of it being down to make a move. Otherwise, it's going to get right back up and start charging off again.]
