❪ march event log: taken! ❫

CW: This event log will contain descriptions and threads involving extreme violence, torture, and possible death. While we do not intend to push beyond any boundaries indicated in sign ups, players may opt out of any aspect of their group write-ups that they find uncomfortable.

Characters who have been assigned a role for this month's plot will find specific information about their groups and locations in headers below. We encourage that you thread among your groups within these headers, and as a reminder, only characters with plot roles may participate in rescue threads or hostage situations. All characters, however, are welcome to toplevel and tag in this log.

To receive special commendation and be recognized as heroes in a future post, hostages and rescuers must submit a short summary of their event participation HERE by March 24th.

OVERVIEW
While the riots and fanatic celebrating in Olympia and Wyver have subsided, neither city is naive enough to believe that life has yet returned to normal. There remains a tension among the citizens: not the slow simmer waiting to boil over that had preceded the aforementioned events, but an apprehension and fear that, despite the Royal Guard and Knightryder’s best efforts, the worst is yet to come.

In Olympia, as night falls on the 18th, their fears are proven true.

With their previous attempts at revolution through the riots having fallen short, the anti-Simwe radicals in Olympia carry out a more covert operation in their efforts to seize power. Having compiled a list of persons of interest, observed them, gathered intel and taken efforts to ensure that their movements will not be tracked, the radicals strike on the night of the 18th. The entire operation is discrete, and one by one people go missing from streets, homes, and businesses.

News that the kidnappings were a large scale operation doesn’t break in Olympia until the following day, but whispers have already travelled to a similar group of radicals in Wyver, who, fearing what a political coup in Olympia would mean for Wyver—or, more specifically how this could affect their chances to stage their own coup should Shanrian choose to step in—launch their own gambit for power with a similar scheme in the early hours of the 19th before dawn. Many are taken straight from their homes, or on their way to work.

For all their historical tension and division, Olympia and Wyver aren’t that different once the authorities become aware of what has happened. Both cities remain on the alert. In Olympia, Simwe orders immediate action from the Royal Guard, eager to win over the loyalty of her citizens by showing her commitment to freeing the hostages, while in Wyver, Shanrian is equally quick to take action with the Knightryders. The Altar of Volkkra is one of the most sacred institutions in Wyver, and the threat of the radicals drawing followers using its banner is too great to ignore.

ABDUCTIONS AND THE SEARCH

1. Radical groups in both cities have decided that certain citizens of their respective cities would prove to be valuable hostages. Perhaps you've been traveling between cities. Or maybe you've drawn their attention by being outspoken, excelling at your city job, or being an active citizen with a great reputation. What were you doing before you got snatched up? Did someone attempt to stop this terrible thing from happening, to no avail? Did you put up a valiant fight? Regardless of how it happened, you will be forcibly outfitted with an accessory that renders you completely powerless. The extremists are no strangers to magic, either.

2. Those that didn't sign up can still witness characters being abducted and attempt to stop it, though in the end they'll fail to stop the radicals. Characters who either witness these kidnappings or notice the absences can spread the word via missing persons posters, making calls to action, or embarking on searches. Characters that would ICly look for hostages but did not sign-up for the event can still go investigate, but will ultimately not find any kidnappers. All characters may also conduct investigations in locations not included in the clues.

3. With key figures around the cities abducted, several shops and organizations are left stressed and short-staffed. Characters may find themselves working long hours, and can volunteer to help the Guard/Nightryders as they're stretched thin, as well as other key locations such as the Institute, the Fields of the Exalted, etc. There are also children, elderly people, and pets who have been left without care, due to their guardians being kidnapped. Everyone is asked to lend a helping hand.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

1. As rescues take place, extremists will be fleeing the following locations: Simwe Institute, the Sanctuary, and the Royal Guard Academy for Olympia, and a cave high on Namarak Mountain, or an island tower off the coastline for Wyver. Characters that did not sign-up can still catch and round up fleeing radicals as hostages are rescued, with additional details on what the extremists in a particular region are capable of in the group details below.

2. Hostages, both NPC and PC, will be gradually found and recovered between March 18th to the 24th. With how harrowing the experience is, rescuers and abductees alike may require medical attention and a helping hand. Perhaps you hope to support them with a shoulder to lean on, or by being there on Natha Station when any dead awake. Either way, the extremists may be defeated, but morale across both cities has taken a hit.

3. Healing doesn't always mean taking care of just the physical harm. Affected people in the cities, both PCs and NPCs, may have significant emotional scars from their experience. These are much harder to heal, and may not be going away anytime soon, but the people are doing their best to provide happy distractions to those who were taken hostage. Acts of kindness are encouraged and appreciated. Perhaps you can cook a few meals to take a burden off their shoulders, organize a fundraiser to help with relief efforts, or read a book to someone in recovery. A little bit of your time may go a long way.

FINAL OOC NOTES
Once again, hostages and rescuers may find detailed info on their scenarios in subheaders below. These may also be used as top levels for each group! Additionally, all characters, including those that did not sign up, are welcome to toplevel in this log.

For characters that are dying, please be sure to review the FAQ on death! We've updated it to provide more details for everyone this event.

Don't forget to submit a summary of your event participation to guide our plot forward and earn influence with the NPCs!

Cam Buckland | Rescuer (both open and closed prompts)

[personal profile] dontgiveabuckland 2018-03-20 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A. Lost (open for rescuers or others in the city)
[This isn't Cam's first song and dance with hunting down missing people. It's not a hobby he really ever wanted to have, but when he hears about the hostages, he is out on the streets, asking questions and prodding answers out of anyone he thinks has them. For anyone who's met Cam before, his demeanor is markedly more serious than usual, his mouth pressed into a thin line instead of his easy grin. A line that becomes thinner and more weary as time ticks on with no real progress on finding any of the victims.

By the time Voss has turned them away from the Temple—a lead Cam was sure had to be the real deal—a great deal of time had passed, and Cam's starting to run himself ragged. It would be wise to take a break, he's no good to anyone in a fight if he's already beat by the time he gets there.

And, for once, he does the smart thing, sits down on one of the walls outside the temple, takes a breather to collect his thoughts, but images of the kidnapped Lightborn children—huddled on the floor, eyes haunted, the empty cots where there should have been more kids—play across his mind, unbidden.

With bags under his eyes, he pushes himself back up, off of the wall. Rest could wait.
]

B. And found (Open to hostages and rescuers)
Shit!

[It's pandemonium in the Sanctuary. Who is fighting who becomes nearly impossible to tell as hostages, rescuers, and extremists alike turn on each other, punctuated by the few who turn on themselves with their weapons. He's not sure if it's a turned hostage, or simple friendly fire, but Cam gets a nasty slash across his chest—not life threatening, but still too close for comfort— and falls back behind one of the pillars, out of the thick of the fray.]

This is a mess, [Said to anyone in his general vicinity as he offers up a small prayer. A mass healing spell washes over the room, targeting those nearest to him, but something is off. His magic feels dampened somehow. Weakened. It stops up the bleeding on his chest, but not much beyond that.] What's wrong with my magic? [And why is his head feeling so foggy?]

C. Time for a Long Rest (Closed to Red (or anyone else in that house))
[By the time Cam has returned Sandra to her rightful place (it's not like the orb could walk herself home) Cam is running on fumes. Physically, mentally, emotionally. His head is still spinning from earlier, although his mind feels like his own again, and his body aches from the various fights he'd been in (some he remembers better than others).

He doesn't so much ask as just... mumbles something about being downstairs to Sandra before he goes and just... lays facedown on the couch. Thanks to his healing magic he's not bleeding anywhere, but he has definitely looked better. It's hard to tell if he's actually sleeping or not, with his face pressed into the cushions, but unless someone comes to bother him, he is going to lay there for a good eight hours before he moves again.

[ Reign himself wasn't in such a good condition either. Steve had done a rather good job in calming him down and getting his head into the proper space to save the hostages, but that didn't mean Reign wasn't still worried.

He stepped out of the temple, phone in hand as he either texted someone or checked for possible incoming messages. In his lack of concentration, he didn't see Cam standing until he very nearly knock into him. ]

Oh... Urm, sorry. Didn't see where I was going...

[The man on his phone knocks into Cam as he is making it to his feet, making him teeter off balance for a second, but he recovers, and the kneejerk expression he shoots Reign with is annoyance. But that melts away easily enough as Cam recognizes him as one of the many out searching for the hostages. Man, he looks about as tired as Cam feels.]

I'll forgive you if you tell me you have something new on the hostages.

[He gestures to the phone that Reign had just been so preoccupied by. Here's hoping.]

[ Reign honestly felt bad to have knocked into Cam, and his apology would have been more sincere if he weren't so worried about his friends. He needed to pull himself together if he wanted to work together with these people and find the hostages.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much Reign could provide as he shook his head and pocketed his phone. ]

I'm as lost as you are. You heard what Overseer Voss said. From what I've heard from a friend of mine, many seemed to have gone missing since last night, since they never made it home.

[personal profile] dontgiveabuckland 2018-03-24 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Luckily, it takes a lot more than that to get under Cam's skin, and he's largely already forgotten about it. Reign is lucky that exhaustion has a way of tempering Cam's usual sense of humor. He didn't get his hopes too high that the answers might be on Reign's phone, but his shoulders still sag in disappointment. He rubs a hand over his mouth, to his chin, thinking.]

What are the chances everyone just... decided to go on vacation? Together. All at the same time.

[Mostly tempered his sense of humor.]

[ Reign's lips quirked just the slightest bit at the humour attempt. Whether Cam did it for Reign's sake or for himself, it didn't matter. ]

If they did, where do you think they headed to?

[ Honestly, Reign wished someone would just hold up a card that reveal where the hostages were. ]

What about you? Any ideas where they might be?

[ It irked Reign that their first choice at the Temple was a bust. ]

[personal profile] dontgiveabuckland 2018-03-24 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[A little from column A, a little from column B. Humor, or even annoyance, is easier to deal with than feelings of loss and disappointment. If Cam were the type to philosophize, he'd say something about how you have a choice to look at life as either a tragedy or a comedy—it's either depressing or bizarre. He prefers the latter.]

If it was me, I'd find some quiet place in the woods and just wait for all of [a vague gesture to everything around them,] this to blow over ['This' being the mounting tensions brewing in Olympia. The riots and the violence.

More seriously,
] Beats me. I put all of my money on finding them here.

[And that stings a little. If something happens to the hostages because they were on a wild goose chase...]

[ Reign would have opted for comedy as well, a bizarre comedy, if anything. After all, he was used to trying to look at life in an optimistic light, though he'll probably cry a bit later at night and lament his fate.

He snorted softly at Cam's suggestion, sharking his head lightly with a wry smile. ]
It's like this tension will never end, merely waiting for the right moment to boil over.

[ His expression fell, heaving a long sigh. ] I had thought so too, especially after the fiasco the Temple pulled with those experimental creatures in the labyrinth.

[ Reign glanced around, almost as if hoping that someone, anyone, would let them know where the hostages were held. Every moment wasted meant the hostages's safety was further compromised. ]

[You can look at life as a bizarre comedy and still cry at night.

And boiling tension, that sure sounds familiar. Seems like even when his entire world is turned into dust, some things remain the same.

Something Reign says catches Cam off guard, and he tilts his head,
] Wait, what was that about experimental creatures?

[Maybe nothing to do with the hostages, but he'd take any breadcrumb of information at this point.]

[ Reign had thought that when they all found a new life on Nysa, things would get better. It seemed that all worlds were the same, no matter where one ended up. There was always going to be conflict, one way or the other.

Now Cam's question had Reign humming as he tried to collect his thoughts, gather his facts. ]
I'm not really certain, and I've only heard people talk about it. Remember the labyrinth? Something about a few Temple acolytes who were experimenting with fusing animals to create strange creatures. There were all in that labyrinth, and people were sent there for reasons I'm not sure myself.

[ Even Reign didn't know if what he heard was the absolute truth, or if certain parts had been blemished or blown out of proportions. ]
dontgiveabuckland: (Day and night my mind is running)

[personal profile] dontgiveabuckland 2018-03-27 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Cam frowns, rocking back on his heels thoughtfully. There was a good bit of history between the cities that he was still getting up to speed on. Whispers here, rumors there, but it’s difficult to get an entire timeline in relation to each other, and sort out which parts were relevant to their current crisis,]

That still brings us back to the temple, and we know they’re not here.

[Surprise, there’s multiple groups up to shady shenanigans in town.]
eaudevamp: (ғɪɴɢᴇʀ ʟɪᴘs)

[personal profile] eaudevamp 2018-03-28 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ That certainly was the problem, because the whole chimera issue was what led Reign to suspect the Temples.

Reign made a humming sound, nodding in agreement. ]

I've done a few quests for the Overseer before, and while I don't fully trust him, he doesn't seem to be lying about the kidnappings either.

[ Oh, Reign hadn't like what he had to do during those quests, snooping around even if for the sake of investigating potential corrupted high-ranking Olympians of importance.

Just then, a timid looking cleric with the Sanctuary's attire slowly approached them. ]

Ah, urm... Excuse me. I've a favour to ask of you gentlemen.
dontgiveabuckland: (When'd I become my own enemy)

[personal profile] dontgiveabuckland 2018-03-31 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No. And I think we'd have a lot bigger problem on our hands if he was involved.

[Crime by random groups of extremists were one thing. Crimes by people in positions in power were another.

Before he can comment further, there is a voice, and a timid cleric.
]

If that favor doesn't include saving the hostages, we might have to take a rain check.

[ The concept of waiting has never been a strong suit. Or maybe it's the helplessness that comes with leaving things up to everything but herself ( alternatively, the fact that everything begins to right itself, slowly but surely, without her involvement; she's never been comfortable with that idea, either ). The point is, the tension in her shoulders and the need to check her phone every few minutes never disappears. Her notebooks left closed, as she alternates between searching and waiting and —

At some point, she wakes to a quiet house.

And that's terrifying in its own right, until she realizes that a note has replaced the teal-glow of her room, and her phone has a small number of texts waiting for her. It's ... reassuring, to say the least, that she's not the only one keen to update each other about their current statuses ( she wouldn't have it any other way, given the last few days ). Another wave of relief for when she realizes that everyone has returned, in some form another — which means she has little to do in her bed anymore.

( By the time she reaches the green orb, gently tapping on the table she's resting on, no response comes. Disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. She leaves the room — and the thought — for later. Soon. )

Except quiet doesn't mean empty, apparently — by the time she's made it to the living room, she pauses at the figure on the sofa ( her fingers twitch for a weapon that she doesn't have, at first; until she realizes who it is ). Lips thinning despite herself, somewhere between concern and annoyance. Both of it disappear just as quickly. She's been filled in enough.

Before she settles down on the chair beside the couch, she grabs a glass of water from the kitchen. Sets it on the coffee table beside them, before gently tapping him on the shoulder. If he were to look up, there's a message waiting on the screen — ]

[His reaction is delayed, and it might seem like her poking on his shoulder wasn't enough to rouse him, but sure enough, slowly he lifts his head—and only his head, he hasn't worked up the motivation for anything else yet. If he had any intuition on who it was before making eye contact, he doesn't show it, and he raises his eyebrows in surprise as his eyes go first to Red, then to the glowing screen in front of him.

As usual, it takes him a minute to read, face decidedly neutral the whole time. Finally,
] ...Sorry, I can't read. Probably should have said something about that before.

[And the smirk (short lived, as a still-healing split lip causes him to wince) implies that he is full of shit. At least the events didn't remove his ability to be an idiot, although the joke runs a little more deadpan than usual. Why is Cam like this?]

Sandra's upstairs, if you're looking for her.

[ Apparently she's starting to surround herself with people that use humor to deflect the worst of it — the twist of her lips is hopefully enough to tell him that was less than impressive, or something.

Only — if there's any difference between the last time and ... now, a lot of the heat's missing ( it's hard to be angry at someone slowly wasting away on the couch ). She does turn her phone back towards her, typing up the next set of messages. ]

[It's not a bad coping mechanism, you should try it sometime, Red. He doesn't seem to mind her disdain for his joke, although the lack of anger is a nice change.

And napping seems off of the table, at least for a few minutes, so Cam wills himself to sit up, rubbing a hand over his eyes.

She wants to ask — what exactly happened back there, with Sandra. But whether or not she should ask is another issue entirely. But his voice cuts through the silence before she can make a decision, one way or another.

— And this time, the surprise slips through. Blinking, eyebrows furrowed, because she knows exactly what he's talking about ( it had confused her and unsettled her for a while, a small, delicate looking thing that she never understood a reason for; she had her theories, but... ). A long look, and Red gets up. Wordlessly, without warning. Disappears from the livingroom entirely by moving up the stairs, only to return in a minute or two. In her hand is the small wooden box she was gifted.

Cam stares after her and, worried that he's pissed her off again, after a minute he rises up off of the couch, hovering somewhere between staying put and following her for a real, verbal apology. As much as he puts his feet in his mouth, he doesn't really like leaving things off negatively, especially when it's his fault.

Footsteps on the stairs heralds her return and Cam sits back down before she can know he was worried.

There's a beat of silence, then another as he stares at the paper, dejectedly. Then... slowly, a smile.
