CW: This event log will contain descriptions and threads involving extreme violence, torture, and possible death. While we do not intend to push beyond any boundaries indicated in sign ups, players may opt out of any aspect of their group write-ups that they find uncomfortable.

Characters who have been assigned a role for this month's plot will find specific information about their groups and locations in headers below. We encourage that you thread among your groups within these headers, and as a reminder, only characters with plot roles may participate in rescue threads or hostage situations. All characters, however, are welcome to toplevel and tag in this log.

To receive special commendation and be recognized as heroes in a future post, hostages and rescuers must submit a short summary of their event participation HERE by March 24th.

OVERVIEW

While the riots and fanatic celebrating in Olympia and Wyver have subsided, neither city is naive enough to believe that life has yet returned to normal. There remains a tension among the citizens: not the slow simmer waiting to boil over that had preceded the aforementioned events, but an apprehension and fear that, despite the Royal Guard and Knightryder’s best efforts, the worst is yet to come.

In Olympia, as night falls on the 18th, their fears are proven true.

With their previous attempts at revolution through the riots having fallen short, the anti-Simwe radicals in Olympia carry out a more covert operation in their efforts to seize power. Having compiled a list of persons of interest, observed them, gathered intel and taken efforts to ensure that their movements will not be tracked, the radicals strike on the night of the 18th. The entire operation is discrete, and one by one people go missing from streets, homes, and businesses.

News that the kidnappings were a large scale operation doesn’t break in Olympia until the following day, but whispers have already travelled to a similar group of radicals in Wyver, who, fearing what a political coup in Olympia would mean for Wyver—or, more specifically how this could affect their chances to stage their own coup should Shanrian choose to step in—launch their own gambit for power with a similar scheme in the early hours of the 19th before dawn. Many are taken straight from their homes, or on their way to work.

For all their historical tension and division, Olympia and Wyver aren’t that different once the authorities become aware of what has happened. Both cities remain on the alert. In Olympia, Simwe orders immediate action from the Royal Guard, eager to win over the loyalty of her citizens by showing her commitment to freeing the hostages, while in Wyver, Shanrian is equally quick to take action with the Knightryders. The Altar of Volkkra is one of the most sacred institutions in Wyver, and the threat of the radicals drawing followers using its banner is too great to ignore.

ABDUCTIONS AND THE SEARCH

1. Radical groups in both cities have decided that certain citizens of their respective cities would prove to be valuable hostages. Perhaps you've been traveling between cities. Or maybe you've drawn their attention by being outspoken, excelling at your city job, or being an active citizen with a great reputation. What were you doing before you got snatched up? Did someone attempt to stop this terrible thing from happening, to no avail? Did you put up a valiant fight? Regardless of how it happened, you will be forcibly outfitted with an accessory that renders you completely powerless. The extremists are no strangers to magic, either.

2. Those that didn't sign up can still witness characters being abducted and attempt to stop it, though in the end they'll fail to stop the radicals. Characters who either witness these kidnappings or notice the absences can spread the word via missing persons posters, making calls to action, or embarking on searches. Characters that would ICly look for hostages but did not sign-up for the event can still go investigate, but will ultimately not find any kidnappers. All characters may also conduct investigations in locations not included in the clues.

3. With key figures around the cities abducted, several shops and organizations are left stressed and short-staffed. Characters may find themselves working long hours, and can volunteer to help the Guard/Nightryders as they're stretched thin, as well as other key locations such as the Institute, the Fields of the Exalted, etc. There are also children, elderly people, and pets who have been left without care, due to their guardians being kidnapped. Everyone is asked to lend a helping hand.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

1. As rescues take place, extremists will be fleeing the following locations: Simwe Institute, the Sanctuary, and the Royal Guard Academy for Olympia, and a cave high on Namarak Mountain, or an island tower off the coastline for Wyver. Characters that did not sign-up can still catch and round up fleeing radicals as hostages are rescued, with additional details on what the extremists in a particular region are capable of in the group details below.

2. Hostages, both NPC and PC, will be gradually found and recovered between March 18th to the 24th. With how harrowing the experience is, rescuers and abductees alike may require medical attention and a helping hand. Perhaps you hope to support them with a shoulder to lean on, or by being there on Natha Station when any dead awake. Either way, the extremists may be defeated, but morale across both cities has taken a hit.

3. Healing doesn't always mean taking care of just the physical harm. Affected people in the cities, both PCs and NPCs, may have significant emotional scars from their experience. These are much harder to heal, and may not be going away anytime soon, but the people are doing their best to provide happy distractions to those who were taken hostage. Acts of kindness are encouraged and appreciated. Perhaps you can cook a few meals to take a burden off their shoulders, organize a fundraiser to help with relief efforts, or read a book to someone in recovery. A little bit of your time may go a long way.

[Still shaky, Atsushi looked up at what Reign had done. It didn't put an end to the terror altogether, but it offered an opening, if nothing else. Hesitantly, he reached up to take Reign's hand.

He would still be nervous when going through that door, sweating profusely and possibly squeezing his eyes shut as he forced himself to pass through... but, with Reign's help, he'd make it. Only when he was safely outside the room did the fear finally begin to ebb away properly, leaving only total exhaustion in its wake. Very slowly, as if afraid he might fall right back into that terror just by seeing the room again, he looked back over his shoulder at it.]

The others...

[He said that, but he couldn't go back there if he wanted to.]

[ Reign waited patiently for Atsushi to take his hand, much like treating a frightened creature. If Atsushi were in his weretiger or full tiger form, that would have been a hilarious sight.

At least it seemed the fear was gradually leaving Atsushi, and for that Reign was grateful. He helped Atsushi to his feet and leading them to the exit, pausing when the other spoke. ]

They've been rescued already. [ Well, Reign hoped they hadn't miss out anyone. The chaos created by the extremists made it difficult to tell who were the hostages or kidnappers. ] We should get your arm looked at.

[Good... Good. Some part of Atsushi felt guilty that he hadn't been the one to do the rescuing, but he could only accept that and move on, at this point.

Oh, right, his arm... As he looked down at it, the pain finally started to feel the way it was supposed to - which honestly wasn't an improvement. His expression twisted.]

I should be able to heal it, but... I haven't been able to use my ability or my healing since I was kidnapped.

[Which might have to do with something he was wearing - a necklace or bracelet, perhaps? - but if so, he'd been hypnotized to not really notice the item in question as being out of place.]

[ At least it seemed Atsushi had somehow snapped out of whatever had ahold of him. The fact that Atsushi couldn't heal himself was worrisome. ]

It's the same with other hostages as well. They weren't able to use their abilities, as if under the influence of the extremists. Like some kind of mind control.

[ Reign would know, seeing how Mephisto had been under a kind of trance before he finally got the demon to "wake", or the fact that Mephisto hadn't been able to use his powers either.

But just to be sure, Reign did a quick check around Atsushi, making certain that there was no sure device limiting his friend's ability. ] None I can see, so it must be the mind control, I believe.

Then I just... have to believe it, don't I?

[Much easier said than done, unfortunately. He was still halfway in shock, the hypnosis feeling like a physical thing in his head.]

... Maybe I should go home, first.

[Get into a safe space, relax, and see how he managed; not to mention he had to feed Daifuku.

... OH NO!] Daifuku! Has someone been taking care of him?!

[ Of course Atsushi would worry about the tiger cub. Reign would too if he got kidnapped and didn't have anyone to care for the giraffe. He lay a comforting hand on Atsushi's shoulder, squeezing gently. ]

I'm sure Chuuya has been looking after the cub. I've Scorch accompanying him as well.

[ Otherwise, Reign wouldn't know how to care for both his pet and search for the hostages. At least then the two creatures would have each other for company. ]

First, we get your arm looked at, then we head home.

[Between one thing and the other, Atsushi hadn't even thought about Daifuku in days. The guilt was worse than the concern, at this point. But of course Chuuya wasn't captured... so Chuuya would have taken care of Daifuku. It didn't lessen Atsushi's self-hatred, but he was used to that - and at this point, even self-hatred was almost comfortable, for how familiar it was.]

... Okay.

[He felt bad to bother someone about his arm when he was supposed to be able to heal it himself, but he wasn't about to argue about it. He just wanted to go home and rest and hope he felt better after.]

[ Reign had a feeling Atsushi wasn't thinking right at this moment, what with the extremists influencing their minds and causing his friends to react in unexpected ways.

He was still worried, but at least the worst seem to be over, for now. With that, Reign led Atsushi towards the other side of the infirmary wing, some of the Sanctuary staffs already dashing over to treat Atsushi's arm. ]

Will you be all right here? I'm going back in to check if there are others who still need help.

[ Reign's eyes darted briefly towards where Mephisto was currently laying on a bed some distance away, all bandaged up. But there was one more thing he had to be certain. ]

Have you seen Dylas? Chuuya told me he was missing as well.

Of course.

[He definitely didn't want to keep Reign from helping other people, staring at his arm a little dazed as Sanctuary staff started treatment.

Dylas..? It took Atsushi longer than it should to confirm that his memories were correct.]

Yes - he was there, too.

[Was he, still..? Atsushi had no idea. That, in itself, brought with it an ominous feeling.]

[ Reign didn't know if he should feel relieved or not that Dylas was here as well. Relieved because this meant it didn't need to take long to find Atsushi's friend, but worried as well since this rescue group had taken so long to find the right location.

He nodded, placing a hand on Atsushi's shoulder, squeezing gently. ]

I'll get him out. Trust me. [ Who would have known that these words were spoken too early. Reign turned to the staffs, making sure that Atsushi would be looked at and treated. ] I'll be right back. [ With that, Reign made his way towards the place where the hostages had been held, intending to look for Dylas and get him out. ]
