( introlog #5 ) strangerer things
You have spent the last few days on Thesa Station, taking in the knowledge that your world is no more. Perhaps you've made some friends (or maybe an enemy or two). Either way, you aren't expected to spend all of your time on the Station. El Nysa needs you, after all, and you promised you'd help the planet thrive. Are you ready?
Submit an AC-eligible thread with a new character as a participant for 2 OLYMPIA REP POINTS OR 2 WYVER REP POINTS, respectively, HERE or HERE. THESA STATION
All refugees on the station are called to the hangar where a large-scale teleporter has been set up; everyone will be sent to the planet together. Simply step onto the space between the arrays and wait. Before they depart, all new refugees will be given a starter kit!
You may have heard about earlier technical difficulties, but don't worry. I promise everything is in perfect working order this time. I'd say I tested it myself, but since that's not exactly possible, you'll just have to trust me! (Please.) The older refugees will also be there to guide you to ensure no one is left confused... or behind. Make sure you wait for them — I've been detecting something odd so I'll be having them meet you at the landing site. Good luck, refugees! Not that you'll be needing it or anything... The arrays begin to hum and glow, quickly building into a brilliant wash of light. It creates a column that travels all the way from Thesa Station to the surface of El Nysa. With the night sky as a canvas, the beam can be seen all the way from Olympia and Wyver — a view that has the natives whispering of blessings. As a sudden but beautiful aurora splays across the sky, the refugees down on the planet receive a message asking them to travel to the landing site — and warning them to prepare for what may come of the strange readings Zasere's gotten from the teleport itself. ON A BEAM OF LIGHT ![]()
Traveling through the light leaves the impression of blinding starlight, a strange sense of weightlessness, and a disorienting moment of total sensory deprivation. The radiance of your teleport hangs bright in the sky above you, a shimmering aurora that reflects off the calm waters below, visible for miles all around.
You've landed on a peninsula to the east of the South Outpost. There's little here — scattered trees on spring-barren plains, with a few overgrown, dilapidated structures poking out of the brush. All is quiet save for the keening of animals and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. This lonely desolation is hardly the bustling cities and vibrant cultures you were promised back on the station... BY CAMPFIRE'S GLOW. But waiting for you is a group of your predecessors, and with them, a veritable tent city, with portable stoves, coolers of food and drink, comfortable bedrolls, and cheerful rings of bonfires — all that you need to make merry of the night, courtesy of Overseer Voss, who has, thanks to his interest in blessed meteorological phenomena and refugees, decided to make a holy expedition of the affair. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS ![]()
Despite going off without hitch, the new refugees' arrival isn't entirely without incident. It seems that the "blessed" beam of light that brought the refugees down to El Nysa brought something else along with it — a sliver of the Storm. At least the beam was short enough that only a small fraction managed to squeeze through.
But it's enough to wreak a little havoc around the landing site and along the road back toward Olympia and Wyver — and even, for a few days, in the cities themselves. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE. The Storm is an undeniably destructive force, and that's proven with this small sliver's effect as it ripples across the continent. While there's no visible sign of its presence, strange phenomena soon begin to appear, corresponding with Zasere's odd readings. DECISIONS, DECISIONS... ![]()
The time is coming to make a choice — perhaps not a permanent choice, but unless you want to spend the rest of your nights out under the stars, you'll need to pick which city you will initially spend your time in. On the horizon, you will see that people have arrived to help you make that decision...
A FORK IN THE ROAD. Refugees and the hyper-religious wishing to hear Voss speak are not the only ones out and about under the light of the aurora. Citizens of both Olympia and Wyver have flocked to a point on the road midway between the cities and where the refugees have appeared, and they all have the same goal in mind: convincing the newcomers who have just descended in the blessed light of Thesa to come to their city and not the other. You've chosen your path, refugee, but that doesn't necessarily make it a permanent one. Watch out for the strange effects of the Storm, which linger still in the two cities and everywhere in between for the next few days before dissipating just as mysteriously as they came, but otherwise enjoy the welcome and make yourself at home — after all, this is home now. FINAL OOC NOTES

Kotarou Katsura | Gintama
[ Katsura can appreciate the benefits of a good recruitment drive. Once he realizes the two factions are gathering he sets off to check out each city's tent and judge their methods - and finally decide which one seems more worthy of his attention, of course.
But then he sees the pegasi and abandons his plan without a shred of hesitation. He pounces on the opportunity to take one for a ride, eagerly following after the handler to a particularly docile pegasus that doesn't seem the least bit bothered by this long-haired newcomer. But rather than actually saddling up and climbing on, Katsura is immediately distracted by just petting the unusual creature. Its so soft, and unlike most animals Katsura dotes on it doesn't seem to mind the onslaught of affection at all.
Katsura's attention isn't totally occupied by the pegasus, however, and at some point he breaks from rubbing his face against its mane to address someone who happens to be passing by (or who happens to be staring at the weirdo cuddling a pegasus). ]
Ah, are you interested in pegasi, too? You should pet this one - he's exceptionally soft.
[ And then he waits expectantly, because what sort of person would say no to that offer? ]
( II. FORGETTING IS SO LONG. )
[ It's immediately obvious that something has changed. A field in the middle of a storm is pretty different from the deck of an airship on a clear, sunny day, after all. Katsura recognizes this place in an instant, and while he doesn't quite trust that it's not real he quickly recognizes that things aren't quite behaving as reality should.
After all, it's an open space with no hiding places, but the two men standing on the deck haven't reacted to or even noticed Katsura and the stranger that got dragged along for the ride. That enough is to make Katsura turn to his 'guest' and start trying to usher them away, waving his arms around and shouting a bit. ]
Ah, hey! It's not nice to eavesdrop, and that guy in the bandages looks like he'll try to recruit you to do something dangerous, right? We should get out of here!
[ 'That guy in the bandages' will be recognizable as Takasugi to those that know him, whereas the second man is obviously Katsura himself, albeit with his hair chopped off to above his shoulders. Even over the real Katsura's yelling, it's not hard to overhear that two of them are having a terse argument about 'sensei', someone named Gintoki, and destroying the world. ]
( III. WILDCARD. )
[ Hit me up with a starter of your own! ]
wildcard
Though, the view that accompanies his dinner is pretty pathetic.
A particular idiot wandering around has caught his eye - from the way he dotes on the horses to a few instances of the man following the same path.
Takasugi assumes that's due to Zura getting lost, overwhelmed by 'hospitality', rather than an intergalactic anomaly.
The only stellar irregularity here is Zura's brain.
Tossing the last of the skewer sticks to his plate, Takasugi rises to intercept the man's path by falling in step with him.
He doesn't have time for a coy greeting. The moment his foot falls into grass beside his old comrade, they're transported away from the field. Wood creaks beneath them, an expanse of hallway in familiar, Edo style.
It's dark, the air is crisp with the scent of night, and another Takasugi roams the halls. There's a bit of a sway to his steps, just a hint more than his typical saunter, and when he reaches the next available sliding door, he leans his head into the wood.
This memory isn't familiar. He must have been drunk. Takasugi fixes his gaze on Zura, rather than whatever scene is unfolding before them.] Yo.
Looks like they kicked us out of their party.
no subject
And if whoever is watching is someone that's not quite one and definitely not the other, then Katsura will simply turn his head just enough to give him a flat, deadpan look. Only the way the world suddenly changes around him has Katsura looking around, expression a bit puzzled but not nearly alarmed enough to fit the situation. How could be distracted by something like this when he has an old comrade to catch up with. ]
I'm sure it's just you they kicked out - I've been assumed guilty by association.
[ Probably not inaccurately, but that's hardly the point. He turns his gaze to the other (drunk? he seems drunk) man meandering about. ]
See? This is obviously a holding cell for Takasugis.
no subject
Coming from Zura, though, there's just enough of a sense of familiarity that laces the look in his eyes. Takasugi can't remember a time he was spared this pointed aloof act.
He laughs, the sound sharp but quickly lost in the pervasive silence of the scene before them. As if whatever is causing it monitors the atmosphere as much as the view.] What kind of jail gives its inmates that much sake?
[If there really was such a place, maybe he'd turn himself in.
Like hell. The specter Takasugi slowly reaches a groping hand for the door, sliding it open to take one step inside before stopping mid pace. What the hell are you doing here-!? Rustling sheets, the clatter of wood. We're trying to sleep. Shoo, shoo!
But the memory just stands and stares, long and vacant, before sucking in a breath and slamming the door.
Wrong room.]
no subject
I'm surprised you don't deny it. You could blame that cosplaying friend of yours.
[ But then again, dodging responsibility isn't exactly Takasugi's style, is it? He's always been the sort to embrace whatever trouble he causes for himself. More importantly... ]
But I suppose he couldn't have gotten away with walking in on someone like that.
no subject
The drunk opens another door - Mister, are you okay? Your eyes are red. He straightens. Mister, are you lost? He shuts the door.
It isn't much of a scene.
But he remembers, vaguely, this part - when that question, "are you lost", had made his gut ache. A pang of something he'd written off as vomit. He does the same now.]
Aa. And what are you planning on getting away with here? [He picks up the conversation he'd intended to have with Katsura, before this interference.]

Oh, no. I'm not going anywhere.
[She isn't even going to look at Katsura, not yet. (Which, dang, Ros, that's super rude, it's his memory). Idly she flaps a hand at him, a dismissive sort of gesture: go away, because she's taking another step forward.
Oh, yes. She recognizes Takasugi all right, and she steps forward, circling around to glare at them both. She's not so much eavesdropping as blatantly listening in, but whatever, it's probably fine.]
no subject
Despite his protests Katsura just... allows her to pass, though he does turn to hurry after her. ]
I mean it, he's incredibly shifty! You don't know what he might try to sell you!
[ In the memory, the conversation proceeds rather sedately for a moment. Unsurprisingly, Takasugi can't be talked out of his extremism. Katsura seems to accept that and welcomes him to destroy the country if he wishes, and subsequently promises to stop him the moment he threatens the lives of said country's citizens.
The present-time Katsura is plainly agitated, but he does a pretty good job of ignoring it. Right now, his attention is focused on the balcony behind and above memory-Katsura. ]
And there could be other things to worry about here, too.
[ He remembers how his next part goes, and he can already see the pair that's about to ambush him lurking in the shadows. Even if nothing here has reacted to their presence yet doesn't mean things will stay that way. ]
no subject
[A beat, and now she finally glances over at Katsura, wrinkling her nose.]
Even if I didn't know him, I should think that's obvious. Rational men don't talk about destroying countries. But do tell: what other threats should I be worried about?
no subject
That changes things considerably. The nervous energy drains out of Katsura and he's suddenly much more placid. ]
For one, I last track of him after this point.
[ And right on cue, pair lurking in the shadows step out of the shadows (they're some sort of humanoid pig creature and a blond, grey-skinned elf, if that sort of thing is weird) and leap down to to finally jump the short-haired Katsura. ]
And a battle is about to break out. Even if we're unseen and unheard, we might not be untouchable.
no subject
A good point.
[But she won't be deterred:]
Why did you need to keep track of him?

I prefer my own feet on the ground rather in the sky, but I have several companions who are more than fond of riding pegasi.
[ He gives the horse another good pet before stepping back, attention turning towards this newcomer. ]
Do you wish to own a pegasus of your own one day?
[ (It turns out the man was right; the pegasus is exceptionally soft.) ]
no subject
[ That's right, their handlers had been promising as much. The prospect is appealing, but... ]
I already have Elizabeth. He might get jealous if I replace him...
[ So no, that won't be happening. Besides... ]
And there's no way to know which cause it worth joining just from something like this.
no subject
Best not to disturb Elizabeth then.
[ Whoever he is.
The second sentiment garners much more understanding and a more certain nod. ]
I'm afraid I cannot recommend one cause over the other. Both sides have committed atrocities against the other, with no justifiable reason behind their actions.
[ Hopefully he's talking to a newcomer and not a fanatical Olympian resident ready to jail him for his blasphemous words... ]
no subject
But fortunately, there's no cause for concern when it comes to Katsura's allegiance. Rather than seeming upset but the allegation he just looks interested. ]
I didn't expect that. Most people would say there's always one aggressor in any situation.
no subject
[ But he says this quietly, gaze glancing off the people nearby. Despite not having personally witnessed the brunt of the riots that occurred so recently, he's certainly heard of how fanatical the citizens can be when it comes to obedience to a certain set of values and beliefs.
He looks to Katsura again, assessing. ]
Have you heard much about the tensions between the two countries?

Since you're offering, don't mind if I do!
[ Cain means to just be friendly — it's just a winged horse, there's nothing much special about that&mdahs; okay, who is he kidding, it's a pegasus, and he finally gets to see one up close, this is just about the coolest thing ever. He doesn't bother to stand on ceremony, or even dignity, just immediately leans in and starts petting the horse's neck. ]
Ahhhh— You're so soft! What a good boy, I want to cuddle you forever!
[ And quickly devolves into hugging the horse, his face pressed up against the horse's mane just as Katsura's had been. ]
no subject
Isn't he? I can't say I expected them to be this docile.
[ Such a good flying horse. ]
I wonder if there's a way to acquire one short of following these people back to their city...
no subject
[ Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... Except not that sorry, because Cain's still got his face smushed against the pegasus's neck with no sign that he's going to be moving anytime soon. In fact, if anything, it looks kind of like Cain's going to just... stand there and maybe doze off... This is an awfully fluffy soft pegasus. ]
They're very well trained, though, since they're used even as royal mounts.
no subject
Hmm... That makes it hard to swallow their claim that you can earn the right to own one.
[ Katsura's an idiot, but he keeps his voice down. No need to piss off any Olympian's that may be watching. Hopefully Cain isn't one of them, but he doesn't talk like he is. ]
no subject
[ Finally, Cain detaches himself from his potential pillow. At least enough to glance over at his companion in admiring the soft, cloud-like fluffiness of this particular pegasus. ]
But I've met someone who's earned exactly that. It's no easy feat, but they do mean it when they say it's possible.

[But at Katsura's invitation, Kaden is going to help himself to some pegasi time. They are soft. Not quite as soft as him (but he assumes that's a given), but they're soft nonetheless. He steps closer and reaches up to run a hand through the pegasi's mane, humming to himself for a moment.
And then he makes a face.]
Huh. You know, this one is soft, but it's not soft enough. I don't think he's been brushed today. See? There's a knot here. And this part is a little unkempt.
no subject
Katsura is staring, but even noticing that doesn't shame him into not doing it. It just reminds him to speak. ]
Hmph. Neglecting him like that is inexcusable. Is this the sort of thing they think can win people over...?
Catherine is actually one of my fave Gintama characters so I'm laughing
Of course, he's not saying any of these things. He's happy to have so much attention on him. He's handsome and he knows it, and it's a comforting thought to have while he gently pats the pegasus and untangles her mane a little. She nuzzles him in appreciation.]
Pegasi like these need a different brush than horses, but not many people know that. It's because their manes are softer, see? If you compared her to a real horse, there'd be no comparison, but...I'm pretty soft, too.
[Just as a reminder. He'll put that out there. Why does the pegasus seem to glare at him? Nothing to worry about.]
GOOD TASTE, Catherine is highly underappreciated
As soft as a pegasus? I doubt that.
[ He might be trying to bait Kaden into demanding to be pet, but he's not about to just say that. ]
ah, i see you're a man of culture as well
