01. TRAINING (closed to established cr)

[ bellus used to shake her head at dutch, complaining that she was always fighting dragons. dutch never thought that would become a literal thing, but this place has made that happen.

something else this place made happen? dutch finding a tiny baby dragon in the woods that followed her home. she has no idea how it got there or why she's keeping it or even what she's supposed to do with it. it (she) is roughly the size of a sheep, slender in build, with emerald green scales covering her entire body.

dutch decides to name her lucy. it doesn't mean anything.

in the first twenty four hours of lucy following dutch home, lucy tries to eat dorian the kinkajou three times, climbs onto a shelf, nests in alvis' old shirt that dutch still keeps in her apartment (which is a mess, thanks to ysverai and everything that happened in the undead dragon's wake) and almost sets a table on fire when she coughs.

so that's happening. ]

I'm going to train you. [ dutch tells lucy. step one: fill a spray bottle with water and spray lucy whenever she does something she's not supposed to. step two: enlist the help of a friend. step three: ??? ]

I don't even know what I should teach her.

02. REBUILDING / A BONFIRE (ota)

[ dutch's apartment is a mess. it's still standing, but that's about the only thing that can be said for it. so she's cleaning it up to the best of her abilities while there's a kinkajou dancing around the place, climbing on anything and generally getting in the way, and a dragon is lazing, belly up, in the sun.

around sundown, dutch has set a bunch of stones from a crumbled wall in a circle near that crumbled wall and is building a fire in the stone circle. her oven's wrecked and the crumbled wall means good air circulation, so why not build a bonfire in the middle of her apartment? #justdutchthings

the trip into the woods that got her lucy the dragon also yielded an animal that she's prepped to roast over the fire. lucy's watching proceedings very carefully all of the sudden.

come help with the rebuilding efforts or join her for some meat? she's got alcohol aplenty, too, that she pilfered from a bar so damaged it can no longer serve as a bar. ]

My life's gotten pretty weird.

[ dutch says it in the flippant way people say it when they really mean "i know" and not actually "tell me about it", but her expression softens a little a moment later. ]

This whole place is weird as shit. When did you wake up?

[ He doesn't actually want to talk about it. But it still feels strange— he'd always thought of himself as the normal one, the guy without powers, not so different from any soldier doing their job.

Of course, most refugees weren't exactly civilians. ]

Not long ago. Maybe a week and a half. [ Which explains why he hasn't really connected with his other self. ] I was here before, but it's been… a while.

[ dutch has never been normal. she doesn't know how to be normal. normal isn't in the cards for her. she knows why, now. ]

How long were you asleep for, then?

[ if he can wake up again, maybe there's hope for johnny, too. ]

Couple of months. Maybe four?

[ A pause. ]

It was longer for me.

Remembering new things?

[ it shouldn't be possible, but that's happened to her as well. three days in a stasis pod felt like weeks, months. ]

I've definitely gotten older.

[ Anyone would say so. No one cards him anymore. Or, well, no one cards anyone here, but they didn't on Earth, either. He remembers that. ]

So it's more than memories. [ He has his own reasons not to trust those. ]

I don't get how that's possible if our worlds are gone.

[ it's not him she doubts. ]

Yeah, it occurred to me. [ He frowns. ]

But I was always… behind everybody else. That never made sense either.

[ When he was younger, this was cause for optimism. Now it's just suspicious. ]

How much behind?

[ suspicious is the right word. of course, it isn't the memories that make dutch most suspicious but the fact that the orbiters essentially hold their friends, their families hostage. ]

[ He makes waffling gesture with his right hand. ]

Seventy years, give or take.

[ Yeah. ]

[ huh. ]

You don't look that old. What's your skincare regime?

A lot of time spent in tubes, apparently.

[ That is a joke. Mostly a joke. ]

[ is it, though? ]

Not sure that'll work for me. Guess I'll stick to mud masks.

[ when has dutch ever donned a mud mask? probably never, unless for camouflage. ]

Yeah, I don't recommend it.

[ This is an understatement. ]

[ A pause. He's still ruminating on the depressing stuff. ]

Are you? I'll keep that in mind. [ she doesn't believe it for a second, nor will she ever stop being sarcastic. ]

They want something from us. To fight some battle for them, is my guess.

[ He nods, eyes falling to the ground for a moment. It makes sense to him; he's been through a lot of battles. ]

Should've picked people better at fighting dragons, then.

[ Even though Bucky wasn't here for the dragon fight, he's heard about it. He looks up and over at Lucy. ]

No offense.

[ she has, too. few of them were of her own choosing. ]

She'll deal.

[ she's also a dragon, so lucy didn't understand a word he just said and can't take offence, but never mind that. dutch's lips quirk up, though the expression isn't a happy one. ]

We did okay against the dragon. Pretty sure that wasn't what the Natha were expecting when they dragged us here.

The war between Olympia and Wyver?

[ He'd signed up within weeks when he was first here. ]

Or something deeper than that?

I’m not sure they were expecting that, either, but that’s not what I think they want us to fight.

[ her lips press together. ] Problem is, I’ve no idea what is.

Me neither. [ He exhales. ]

Maybe the real threat hasn't shown up yet.

Pretty sure that's it.

[ which isn't great. ] Now we just need to find out what it is.

With our only lead gone, too.

I guess you just gotta hope it'll be obvious when it comes. [ He sounds skeptcal. Real danger didn't always make itself known when it's convenient. ]
