Who: Lena Oxton (
quevalry) & Jack Morrison (
personalwar)
What: Lena has been given a job and she's dragging Jack into helping her.
When: Backdated to mid August.
Where: Theatre District.
Warning(s): Mentions of death.
[ The second Lena saw that she and Jack were on the same patrol route, she knew that he would be the perfect partner for the task that she was given. There's just something about him that feels somewhat familiar to her and part of her wanted the chance to feel that more. It sounded like he didn't want to agree at first, but naturally, Lena pushed and pushed until he caved in. Granted, if he really demanded that she left him alone then she would because there's no reason in forcing anyone into anything.
It isn't fun to do that. There's no joy in spending time with someone when it's against their will. ]
[ She wasn't going to give in until he said yes. The report is in her hand and she hums in thought while glancing over it, head looking up to one of the large theatres which reside in the district. So, it says that the girl was murdered and poison could be the reasoning for it. There's a good chance that the murderer has kept the vial and hidden it in their room. ]
Says we should check the second dressing room to try find it. [ Because they do say that poison is a woman's weapon and the two women had some sort of rivalry. ] I can't believe that people are happy to kill each other for such petty reasons. [ She could never understand how people could do that, but that's because Lena has never killed anyone in cold-blood before and in fact, she prefers to avoid actually having someone lose their life. ]

That's just how his life goes, apparently.
The problem is that Lena is persistent and persuasive in a way that he can't protest without seeming even more suspicious. It's not like he can give her a reason for not wanting to work with her that would be believable, save for 'I'm actually your old boss and don't want to deal with you finding that out just yet.' So, here they are.
The case is a worrisome one. For someone to be so envious that they would kill their rival, over something as trivial as entertainment, is something that people like him and Lena, who've existed on battlefields, can't really wrap their heads around. But apparently it's time for justice to be done. ]
Are you?
[ He shoots the question right back at her as they linger under an awning a short distance away from the theater. ]
We can't just rush in there without raising suspicion. You got a plan?
[ Come on, Lena, make him proud. ]
no subject
Play a father and daughter role, too. [ She gives him a wink. He looks like he could be her father if he wanted to so Lena is sure that it will work. She looks at the building and gives it a big grin. ] I should hide this though...
[ Lena glances down at the stone which resides on her left breast. ]
It would be a shame for it to give us away. [ Even though she would prefer to wear it proudly because she is proud to be a member of the guards. ]
no subject
It's a good sign that Lena at least came here with a plan in mind. 76 doesn't know if it will actually work, especially with his visor painting him as a suspicious character, but if it doesn't pan out they can always resort to plain old infiltration.
Not that either of them are the best at stealth, but 76 has picked up a few tricks over the past six years. ]
All right, we'll try it your way. When you're ready.
[ He crosses his arms and keeps an eye on the entrance to the theatre, and the doorman who they'll need to convince to let them inside. ]
no subject
[ A proud smile spreads out on her lips as she talks to herself. Using her old call code gives her a small rush of adrenalin as it serves to be a reminder that she can do this. ]
Let's go in, Pops! [ Lena glances over at him, being loud enough that those outside of the theatre will be able to hear her. She wastes no time when it comes to reaching the entrance and will be keeping her fingers crossed that they don't get weird looks.
Mostly 76. ]
Hey! I wanted to meet with one of the actress I saw in a play the other night. I'm hoping for an interview because I'm doing be writing for one of the papers! [ Her tone is calm, matching her movements which are all natural for her to do. The doorman looks at her and then over at 76, who he squints at.
He says that it will be fine, but there is one catch -- 76 is going to have to remove that visor. The doorman mentions how an accident happened not long ago and so they want to make sure that nobody odd looking gets in.
Lena turns her head to glance over at the old man and bites the inside of her cheek as they await a response. ]
no subject
He shoves it away. It's time to focus on the here and now.
He rolls his eyes at what she calls him but says nothing, following a step or two behind her. Everything starts off well enough at first, but then there's the catch: he can't go in unless he takes his visor off.
Well, that sure as hell isn't happening. Which means he either can't go in at all (he could always keep an eye on things out here while Lena goes in), or he has to think fast. ]
I can't. [ He lifts his hand up to the side of the visor, then shakes his head. ] I'm almost completely blind unless I wear this. It can analyze and interpret the environment around me, and it helps me see. [ Are you going to make this old man stumble around blindly in the theatre, doorman?
It's all a lie, of course, but are they really going to question him? ]
no subject
We won't! Just a quick interview.
[ And the second the door opens, Lena zips right on. ] So, where do you think the dressing rooms would be?
[ She can't say that she often had the chance to visit places like this back in King's Row because, well, work and studying took up most of her time. ]
no subject
As it turns out, 76 has a little more experience with this sort of environment than Lena does, if only because he'd had to attend shows at various times over the years for political schmoozing. ] Probably backstage. We might be able to find a service door somewhere...
[ Anything that says "employees only" would be a step in the right direction, and 76 begins to search the area for something that fits the bill. ]
no subject
[ Backstage is where most of the cast will be when it comes to plays and here is no different. She skips after 76 and is keeping an eye out for a door which will get them in. ]
What type of shows have you watched in a place like this? [ Because she assumes he's seen shows before if he knows his way around a place like this. Opening a couple of doors and poking her head in, she looks around in there to see if there's another door before dipping back out. ]
no subject
It doesn't matter. [ And it's true, it had never been about the shows he'd gone to see, but rather the political connections he'd made, the conversations before and after.
He ducks his head into another door and finds a service corridor that looks promising, waving with a gloved hand for Lena to follow him through. At least they'll be away from prying eyes now, assuming they don't run into someone in here. ]
no subject
I guess. [ When he finds a door, she perks up a little and ends up 'blinking' her way around to try to get through the room quicker, checking it out. ] It's clear! Now... which way to the dressing room and which one will be hers... they should have their names on it, right?
[ At least the big stars should have it set like that. ]
no subject
He's quick on her heels, taking a look around. Most of the doors here are unmarked, likely supply closets or power rooms, and whatever else might be needed to keep a theatre like this running. ]
I would think so. Let's keep moving, I'm guessing the place where the actors are is a little nicer than this.
[ He expects to see lush carpets and chandeliers and other signs of luxury. Anything to make the stars happy. ]
no subject
[ they are the 'stars' of the show after all. opening a door, she gives a jump of excitement. ] Found another hallway! This one looks so much nicer... I bet it's one of the doors here. Keep an eye out for the name, uh.... Anna, I think it was.
[ she claps her hands together. they're so close to figuring this case out. maybe she shouldn't be so excited about this because, well, someone has died, but this is her first personal case. ]
no subject
It's true that they're here because someone was murdered, but Lena has never been one to hold back on her feelings, particularly if she's excited about something. ]
Anna, all right. Just... slow down. We don't want anyone hearing us.
[ At least they probably don't have to worry about security cameras capturing footage of them. He continues down the hall, scanning over the plaques for the right name. ]
no subject
[ Yeah, there's a reason she wasn't the leader of any missions given to her. Lena wastes no time with blinking down the hallway and then there's a --
crash
Lena falls onto a woman with long, blonde hair within seconds as she comes out of her teleporting. ] Oh, no. [ She rewinds her own time, biting on her bottom lip as she comes next to Jack now and glances up at him. ] That was an accident, I swear.
no subject
While his face may not be showing, there's no denying the frustration and hint of disappointment as he sighs at Lena, then steps forward to salvage the situation.
He apologizes on behalf of his "daughter." The woman asks what they're doing back by the dressing rooms, and he explains. At that point, she points them in the direction of Anna's room. Pretty helpful, given that Lena almost ran her over. ]
That could have just as easily gotten us kicked out.
[ He mutters the words under his breath even as he moves in the direction they were told. ]
no subject
Now to hurry up with getting there.
It's a little scary to think that she might have hurry because if the suspect gets any hint that someone is looking into them then the evidence might get destroyed. ]
no subject
[ That's a big part of strategic thinking in a mission: knowing when to be cautious and take your time versus when to rush in and get something done as quickly as possible. Lena's still young, so it's not much of a surprise that she hasn't perfected it.
76 picks up the pace, winding down hallways until they find the door they're looking for. He pauses then, placing himself right outside the door to listen for any noise within.
He glances back at Lena. ] Pretty sure she's not in there. Let's go.
no subject
[ Now is the time to not waste, well, time. Lagging behind him a little, when they get the all clear, she blinks up to the door, quickly opens it and blinks inside. ] We need to look for anything that looks like it would have had to poison in it. A small... bottle maybe? What are the chances of it coming in a powder form?
[ To be honest, she doesn't know a lot about poison. Sure, it's a weapon that a lady would use, but Lena isn't the type to be sneaky if she's going to murder someone.
Granted, she wouldn't murder in the first place. ]
no subject
[ 76 follows Lena inside, shutting the door behind him and then locking it. It's strange that it hadn't been locked in the first place, which might mean that Anna has only stepped out for a few minutes and will be back soon.
Or she's foolish enough to have left her dressing room open when there's evidence of a murder in here somewhere.
He's expecting them to come up empty, but it's worth a look. He approaches a dresser first, opening each drawer to search for anything that's been hidden among costume pieces. ]
no subject
Giving a sigh, she falls onto her butt as she sits on the ground. ]
I don't know where it could be... I thought it would be in here because this is her private room, not anyone can come in here, right?
no subject
He maneuvers around her where she's plopped down onto the floor to keep looking, and frowns when he approaches the elaborate vanity. It's packed with different lotions, make up, hair products, and everything else an actress might need. So packed, in fact, that it would be hard to search all of the containers. ]
Maybe it's hidden somewhere here.
[ He makes a motion for Lena to stand up and help him. How're they going to narrow it down? ]
no subject
[ Which, hindsight 20/20, isn't a good idea right now. Standing up slowly, she tries her best to look not so defeated and zips on over to where 76 is standing. ]
Maybe... look for anything that has been opened or ... maybe what we should be looking for is something that doesn't look open. Or, maybe an item that doesn't belong to her. Something that an actress doesn't need two of.
no subject
[ The remark comes out biting, but 76 brushes it off just as soon, more focused on figuring out which of these items might actually be poison. He picks up a few different products, sniffing at some of them (can he smell through the visor? who knows), reading the labels on others, before he notices one container tucked into the corner, small and unassuming. It's white and the top half of it twists off, but there's nothing printed on it.
When he opens it up, he finds a white powder. He takes a whiff and finds that it's odorless. ]
I can't be sure, but... this looks like it might be it.
[ They can't exactly test it, though, can they? ]
no subject
there's a small wince and she'll quickly rewind her own time. in theory, this won't kill her because she was able to avoid widow's poison by doing this. she just might be scolded because of it. ]
Yeah, sure tastes like it. Now, we've just going to turn this on and hunt down Anna! [ which, as soon as lena says that, the door ends up opening and an actress that resembles the one on the poster around the theatre district is standing there, looking quite shocked and startled to see two people in her dressing room. ]
no subject
There's no dwelling on it now. That powder will have to be tested to be sure, probably at the Simwe Institute, and the sooner they're out of here --
Then the door opens, and they're officially caught red-handed. Anna's expression sharpens as soon as she spots the container in Lena's hands, and if that isn't proof, 76 doesn't know what is.
76 moves to stand between the two women, his shoulders squared. ] We're here on official royal guard business. If you have a problem with us being here, I'd suggest that you take it up with Ashti.
[ He's giving Lena an opening to get away. He can only hope she'll take it. ]
no subject
There's just one problem; ]
You okay with me getting out of here?
[ Lena's leaning close to him, almost whispering as she watches Anna's mind turning as she thinks of what to do. She probably didn't think that she would have checked out like this because why would she -- the murder looked like an accident after all. ]
no subject
When Lena leans toward him to make certain that he doesn't have a problem with her taking off, he nods. Better she leaves with the evidence in hand, rather than have all of this be for nothing. He doubts that Anna is going to get violent with him. She'd picked poison as her means of murder for a reason, after all.
Anna, meanwhile, leans back out the door into the hallway and calls for security. If 76 has to be put up with getting thrown out of this place, that's fine by him. No harm done, really. ]
no subject
Catch ya!
[ And there she goes, dashing out and using her ability to flash through time to make sure that nobody is able to catch her, keeping the vial in her hand and making sure that it's safe. Anna won't be able to get work again after this and that is her own fault. ]
no subject
There's still a lot that needs to be refined about Lena's techniques, for one thing.
While he could barrel past Anna and also make a break for it, 76 allows her to detain him. It will offer the distraction that Lena needs to make it out of the building and somewhere safe. A big production is made of him getting escorted off the premises, but when he mentions that Ashti sent him, not too many more questions are posed.
Once he's free to go, he pulls out his phone to send Lena a quick text. ]
You make it out?
no subject
It's back to the whole making sure to do everything right by the system, even if it takes her a while. She'll just be sitting in a chair, writing down all the information about what happened and what they found along with it.
She's going to skip out on her taste testing though. When she hears her phone go off, she makes sure pay attention to that instead. ]
Yup! I'm already back. You'd be surprised at how quickly I can move.
no subject
Ana's already made it clear that they've put this off too long, so he should start to set the wheels in motion, if nothing else.
There's a delay in his response, but it comes: ]
Good work. You're still a little rough around the edges, but you have some potential.
When you have some time after this is over, there's something I need to talk to you about. No rush.
no subject
[ at flying. there's no denying that she has gotten a little rusty and that's because she's not done proper work for quite a while now.
thanks, jack. ]
Oh, sure. I'll let you know when I'm free fro dealing with all of this then.
no subject
[ Translation: don't get too cocky, Lena. Olympia is pretty different from home and they need to learn a whole new set of rules. ]
Works for me.
[ He's happy to put it off a little longer. ]
no subject
[ but daaaaad. there's no denying he has a point though. ]
Great! That's the plan then.
