❪ event ❫ THE DESCENT: PART ONE -- the overflow.
THE PROLOGUE
Your sleep on the night of the 15th is not a restful one, unfortunately. It’s unclear whether you are in a state of half-wakefulness, or dreaming. The voices you hear certainly sound very real.
What is it, Sael? —Is everyone asleep?! Every one, yes. Sael, it appears you do not have good news to deliver...? N-No! I don’t know how it slipped past us, but there’s something powerful coming this way. Something hostile. I can barely keep the core systems online! ... I don't know what to do... I see... and we cannot protect Thesa and Alria in addition to transferring the Refugees to Olympia. This force, they waited for this moment. They knew I have been Intervening, and that I have become weak from such Interventions— ... We've been had. It cannot be helped. To save the Refugees on the Stations, we must eject the awoken unto El Nysa. My remaining energy shall go into shielding Thesa— left defenseless, every being we have saved on this station will perish... Sael, where is the ideal location for the landing? Hmm. There aren’t any people within a ten mile radius of The Outlook, and there shouldn’t be any for a few more days. I think that’s the best location right now. Very well. Instruct Zasere and Roman to begin preparations for an emergency eject. This is the only way we can save everyone. I am counting on you to ward off the enemy on the space front. The rest... is up to our Refugees. The alarms are blaring. It shouts against your eardrums, calling you to wake again. This time, you are in new pod, strapped down completely and cushioned tightly against the walls. In truth, you had no idea when you’d gone to sleep, but it is reminiscent of when you had been saved from the force of the Storm. A voice greets you when you come to, while the conversation between Darma and Sael is still fresh on your mind. Despite their voices playing like an old tune in your memory, you still know it is something that happened. Something has gone terribly wrong. You hear Darma speak, her voice loud in your head. Fellow Refugee, I wake you with regrettable news. A force equal to our own is attempting to engage Thesa, no doubt to steal the souls contained here. My energy is near depleted with this last Intervention, so I cannot send you to the grounds safely as originally intended. However, there is hope yet. This power shall instead shield Thesa and Alria — and believe in me when I swear no one shall be hurt. Your loved ones are safe with us. THE DESCENT ![]()
Meanwhile, in the distant kingdom of Olympia, the Empress and her loyal subject discuss matters late into the night... I’ll have the results of that dragon toxin study ready for you soon, Your Highness. I just need a few helpers to— oh wow, is that a meteor shower? Oh yes, it appears so. How beautiful.. hehe. Let us thank Thesa for this blessing. GATHER YOUR BEARINGS
All in all, the descent lasts for nearly seven hours. After the deployment of the last wave of refugees, it’s only natural that you may be feeling pretty worn out.
A. Within the remains of the pods, Refugees will find basic camping supplies such as small tents, sleeping bags, and compasses. Not all of the supplies remain intact, thanks to the impact of the crash. But, sharing resources will ensure there is enough for everyone to rest for the night. Can you really in good conscience leave that stranger next to you without shelter? FINAL OOC NOTE
This INTRO event will be broken up into three parts! Please keep this in mind when plotting your threads/tag load. PART 3 Will be up on JULY 22ND, at 6 PM EST. We will not provide an additional CAPTCHA for this overflow. Players are advised to move threads to an overflow post on their character journals in the event this overflow gets close to CAPTCHA. These threads remain eligible for AC,
AC Rewards, and REP.
The NETWORK is currently down, as Sael must concentrate all of his efforts on warding off the invading force. Characters may still message each other's personal IC inboxes. Submit two (2) AC-eligible threads from this log for one (1) Natha Orbiter REP point here by JULY 31ST. Recommended Listening: Alex & TOKYO Rose

But, he shakes his mind of those thoughts, deciding to move on in this conversation from sleep and the Fade. ]
There is something I need to ask: Why have you been taking notes about our conversation this entire time? [ He has taken notice finally to what she's writing and it's made him curious. ]
no subject
Mercy gives him a calm smile as she offers this explanation. ) Ah, this is for my own benefit. My memory is not as strong as I need it to be. The technology I am used to makes the mind less likely to retain information. Since I am not able to easily store my notes digitally, I must write them down. But I would not write down anything personal without your consent. You can see what I've just written, if you'd like, or anything else. I imagine some of it would be an effective sleeping aid.
( Like her meticulous listing of supplies she was able to gather up on Thesa. Seriously there's a whole three pages about different bandage sizes and theoretical wound packing in varying levels of gravity. She has some experience with how space effects the practise of medicine but most of that precious information is gone. Just like everything else. )
no subject
Her term definitely don't make mage sense. Digitally? But, again, people seem to becoming far advanced places which definitely had something to do with technology. ]
That' sounds fascinating but what did you do back in your world for you need to take such notes? A healer perhaps? [ If she needed such things to help people sleep it must be something of that nature. If that's the case they definitely needed that. ]
no subject
Close! I was working as a pretty generalised doctor, so I needed a lot of different information about ailments and treatments. There were also my patient files.
Are you a healer yourself? Ah-- ( She looks surprised by her own poor manners. ) My name is Angela Ziegler, by the way, though Mercy also works. A codename.
no subject
He is about to answer her when she cuts in with her name. ]
Oh, yes, it's good to meet you as well, Angela. [ Which he will reach out to shake her hand and while doing so; ]
And no. I'm no healer, sadly. Combat magic only.
no subject
( A doctor's reassuring smile. He seems like a sweet one to her. She's not sure if he's a child or adult, given that she doesn't know how to judge age in elves yet, but he seems rather mature to her, if not a little unsure of himself. And that could just be the circumstances.
Handshake it is! So far it'd been an awkward gesture with elves, so it's good to know she didn't make a complete fool of herself. )
Could you learn healing magic? Or is that something you have to specialise is?
omg mercy mom stop he's a big boy.
[ He just grins at his terrible joke, but he leans a bit forward at the handshake before finally breaking it. Definitely one hundred percent fine with handshakes here. She probably just met the grouchier of the few.
Her question does make him laugh a little nervously. Right. ]
I could learn it, but unfortunately I never got the chance to. Our Keeper had to send me away for business before that lesson.
But, with these circumstances I guess now's a good a time as any to learn.
its ok even big boys get booboos
( Taking her hand back, she folds both of them in her lap to help keep them warm. Such posture, the kind that faintly exudes calm and grace, is pretty much natural for her. She considers what he says, and tries to understand it based on what context she'e been getting about elves and magic over the past few days. ) Your keeper? ( A sensitive topic, so her voice softens. ) Were you a slave? ( She doesn't yet know what vallaslin are, so she does linger on them out of curiosity, wondering if they might be some kind brand. )
:I
Keeper is a term we Dalish use for the person who leads our clan in both literal and spiritual manner. So no I wasn't a slave. I was her First. I was to succeed her in leading our Clan when she passed on.
[ But he does go quiet for a moment and he thinks. ]
However, this may benefit you later if you meet anymore elves from Thedas. At one point the elven people were enslaved and some still are in certain regions of the world.
no subject
Thank you for this information. I will keep it in mind when talking to elves from your world.
I am certainly not your Keeper, and I cannot do magic, but if you ever wish to learn healing, such as it is in my world and how it can be applied here, I would be happy to give you some lessons. I am sure you could also provide me with some insight into how I might treat wounds of a magical nature.
( She smiles now. And after this offer, she does want to prod a bit further for knowledge's sake. ) But tell me, is 'Dalish' what you call modern elves? I think there was--some kind of schism in your people's history? I meet another elf with tattoos similar to yours. ( Gently, she raises a hand to cup her cheek. )
no subject
I can certainly try to lend what knowledge I have with magical wounds. I've made enough potions and poultices to deal with the common ailments.
[ With some help and instruction. At her questioning he does let out a sigh. Oh no. ]
I see you met Abelas.
[ Poor woman. ]
Anyways, no. Not all modern elves are of the Dalish. We are clans that wander Thedas, never really stopping for we have no home. There are elves outside of us who live in human cities but they are not technically apart of the Dalish.
As for the schism; in the times of the ancient elves our Homeland, Elvehnan fell and when it did we lost most of our history and culture with it. The humans of Tevinter then came to the ruins of our land and enslaved those who remained.
[ But there's a weary kind of sigh to it all. ]
Unfortunately, I can't tell you all the details of that time. We only know the fragments of what happened and well...I only just recently learned what truly happened.
no subject
( As for the next part, well. She can't help an amused smile and some sympathy for the man sat across from her. He strikes her as a helpful, earnest sort, the kind whom Abelas wouldn't take well to. Identity politics aside, Senren seems too nice to survive someone like Abelas. She's sure she's just felicitous enough to have gotten on his good side by chance: she was able to make a good first impression on him, and she was able to hold some interest for him by striking him as a curiosity with her technology confused for magic. And, ironically, it doesn't actually hurt that she's human. She's more distant from some of the more personal complications. )
Recently you learnt, when you to met him? I must admit, it can't be easy to be in the presence of a conscious part of your history, who knows the truth of what actually happened. But I don't think it can be easy for him either. His world is gone, everything has changed, and yet his duty is the same. It must be confusing for the both of you.
But that doesn't matter. You have told me enough. I shouldn't have made you think of such unpleasant things before sleeping. Perhaps it would be better if I were a spirit? ( Smiling again, but she is genuinely remorseful. Stirring up such thoughts is unkind. ) Let us speak of something more pleasant. The Dalish are a nomadic culture, you said? How's your oral tradition? Do you have any good stories? It would be a privilege to hear one.
no subject
[ Depending on the fire it could definitely complicate things, but that can wait for now. Thankfully they have not encountered anyone trying to set them ablaze so they have that going at least. However, he keeps neutral look to his face. Clearly, she didn't know all of what was going on between them from what she was saying. ]
Not here, but back in our world, yes. You would be right. It's been a trying time for us both.
[ But you know at least one of them was trying to make the best of things. Abelas just wanted to be sulky forever. Her apology is just met with a half smile as he tries to wave it off. ]
It's fine. I'm sure anyone would have these questions about hearing about a world different from their own. I know I do.
[ Her other questions he does remain silent for. Should he even indulge in this? Solas has told him that the Dalish had much of their history wrong. The temple of Mythal was the biggest eye opener. Finally, he relents, deciding it's better to answer than say nothing. ]
We are. There are many clans spread throughout southern Thedas and every story is passed down from one generation to the next. We try to at least keep some of our history written down and it's the Keeper's job to make sure to preserve it.
[ As for a story...he scratches his chin. ]
There is the story of Fen'harel; the Dread wolf. That's a good one.
no subject
( Smiling, again, and she continues to do so as she listens to what he has to say. Honestly, as much as she'd like to understand, the complicated politics of a race from another world seem a bit much for her to tackle just right now, so she doesn't bother him too much for more explanation when she might want it.
And she nods and laughs when he agrees with her, her heart warming with the same sentiment. It's a comfort to know that he is, so to speak, as inquisitive as she is. Such robust curiosity and willingness to listen, and to discuss, are more signs of a healthy mind. She thinks Abelas would benefit from cultivating such qualities, but. Well. The way things are now, he needs more nurturing and healing and friendly {but stern!} guidance. That's her take, anyway. Otherwise a lot of this is really beyond the capacities of a true stranger.
But, Dread wolf? That's a catchy name to excite her imagination. Her eyes light up, her shoulders hunch and she leans in. ) Fen'harel. ( She says it a bit oddly, more like fennel than fen. ) Is it scary? It sounds like a perfect campfire story.
no subject
[ he takes a long breath before he leans forward, elbows resting on his thighs as his hands fold over one another and go near his chin. ]
You see, legend says that our gods were at war with the Forgotten ones, evil gods. However, there was one god that could walk between both circles and each believed this god was on their side. This was Fen'Harel. He had told both sides believing he had a way to defeat the other. Then when the war was at it's climax Fen'Harel tricked both sides and sealed them all way into the Beyond. They say this is why our kingdom of Arlathan fell because the Creators could not intervene.
Our people see the Dread wolf as the trickster god, god of rebellion who will lead all those astray just for the fun of it.
[ But there's a small pause as he thinks it over.]
However, it's only legend. I'm not quite sure if it can be believed at this point...
no subject
But his pause: it's enough to alert her. She easily connects it to what he expressed before, with something happening and the presence of Abelas upsetting a lot of his fundamental beliefs. Is this another? Gently as she can, she reaches out and touches the back of his hand, shrugs and then lets it sit there as a solid weight. As if to anchor him to what is real. )
If this Fen'Harel had his reasons, or even wasn't responsible in the first place, does it matter now? It's a story. It's not a strident search for truth. Don't let it distract you. ( She withdraws now and shifts. And she may yawn. )
no subject
But, he gives back a smile deciding these problems are probably fairly petty at this time. ]
Yes, you'e right. There's other things to focus on. [ He does let out a stretch when she gives a yawn and looks back to her. ]
I think it's time for bed, Mercy. It's getting late and we have a lot to do tomorrow.
no subject
Still smiling, features softened by the kindly light of the fire and her own creeping need for sleep, Mercy nods at him once before starting to collect herself and her things. Before standing up: )
Of course. Don't let me keep you any longer from getting the sleep you need. If you see any real spirits, say hi for me?
Sleep well, Senren. ( With a wave after her, she turns around and departs. )
