[ despite knowing not all that much about the man, a part of Ocelot rather liked Soldier: 76 (not his real name, obviously, but was he really one to talk?). or at least as much as he could really like anyone. he was cautious, to-the-point, and reminded him of a certain friend that was still waiting for him back in stasis.

and so that was why, he was more than happy to assist in his Royal Guard duties. even over something so mundane as a hostage situation.

they met outside of the Theatre District, while Ocelot awaited instructions. he might have his own ideas on how to proceed, but he'd found that sometimes the best thing to do is just to listen to others at first and go from there. if their plan is solid, then there's little need for modifications. if it isn't...

well. sometimes, it's better to ask forgiveness than permission. ]

[ It's not as if 76 is particularly friendly with any of the other members of the guard, so when it comes to partnering up for this first assignment, he'd been at something of a loss at first. Ocelot here was someone he had at least spoken to once before. It wasn't the most stringent criteria, to say the least, but beggars can't be choosers. Other than the fact that the guy dresses like a less intense version of McCree, he'd struck 76 as capable and competent. Judging by that mention of international espionage on his nametag back when they'd first spoke, chances were he had experience too.

Either way, 76 is going to find out as they carry out this mission together. It should be a decent enough learning experience, to discover whether or not he can consider Ocelot a useful ally.

He wouldn't call a hostage situation mundane, although he's also dealt with ones on a scale much larger than this. Just because it's only one life that hangs in the balance doesn't mean they shouldn't take it seriously, though. ]

We're supposed to sneak in. [ While they can see the building that the girl is trapped in from where they're standing, it's a good distance away from them. ] I've studied the building plans and the city plans that I could get my hands on, and it looks like there's a way in through the sewers.

[ He glances over at Ocelot. One eyebrow raises above his visor. ]

Hope you don't mind dirty jobs.

I've done my share of them.

[ figuratively and literally. a certain memory of chasing a lifelong rival through the sewers comes to mind. only this time, he'd actually be saving someone rather than trying to kill them.

though whether he actually had wanted to kill the man in question at the time is a true mystery for the ages that even he can't answer. ]

I'm here to follow your lead. Just point me in the direction you want me to go and I'll do whatever you need.

[ after all, there'd be no point in trying to get the "glory" for himself, especially given he needed to build a reputation with others.

besides, it would be interesting to see what this man could do. ]

[ Ocelot is content to take the back seat in this mission and follow orders. Fair enough. Jack may not be used to working with anyone other than Ana these days, but there's a time when he'd been practiced in this kind of thing.

Stepping back into those shoes might be kind of uncomfortable, after all this time, but they have a job to complete and he isn't going to let this hostage fall through their fingers if he can do anything about it. ]

All right, follow me.

[ He's on the move then, ducking down side streets and alleyways as he heads for the sewer entrance he'd pinpointed.

He glances back at Ocelot as they walk. ] Did Ashti give you an assignment, too?

[ he nods, as he holds his revolver at the ready. some people might think it's humiliating to take more of a back seat, but in Ocelot's experience, it's actually somewhat refreshing. it lets him see what sort of man he's working with.

in a way, it's almost like an interrogation. ]

I did.

[ again, there was no point in hiding it. ]

She has me looking for a kid with teleportation abilities that's been stealing pies around the palace. Not exactly my typical area of expertise, but I've got a good lead on him. I figure once I catch up with him, I could convince him to see the error of his ways.

[ and again, earn a better reputation with the guard in the process. that's one of the more important things, for the time being. ]

Might even be a good asset to the guard, if he can learn to behave himself.

[ 76 would agree that observation of someone else as they take point on a mission can be enlightening. As much as he hadn't particularly enjoyed holding back and monitoring assignments from a Watchpoint, it had allowed him to size up his newer recruits and figure out who had real promise.

That's all a world away now, though, and he's focused on the task at hand. He doesn't have anything to prove to his current partner; Ocelot can draw whatever conclusions he wants.

Ocelot's assignment is an interesting one, though. Teleportation powers, huh? It's probably different from what Lena is capable of, but 76 is curious all the same. ]

He probably would be. Depends on if he's willing to change his tune, though.

[ It reminds him all too much of the position that Jesse McCree had been in, once upon a time. He'd done a lot more than just steal pies, but Jack had given him a chance to prove himself, to turn things around. It was worth a try. ]

How are you planning to get through to him?

[ He steers them into a back alley, making sure that there's no one around before he approaches a manhole set into the ground. ]

[ his first assignment with the guard had seemed simple enough. almost insultingly so, especially given the backstory that he'd made sure to weave for himself. but still, he'd been placed in charge of guarding the palace and catching a simple thief.

what he hadn't quite expected was for it to lead to something that seemed altogether more complicated than previously let on. after following the man, it seemed as though he had a few more cohorts lurking across the city, engaged in a few different sorts of activity.

and so, he seeks out two members of the Guard also assigned to members of this group. he knows both. one, from a brief conversation on the network. and the other from a conversation on their not-so-perilous voyage to Olympia.

this was going to be interesting. ]
