I'm not surprised.

[ Another time and place, a joke about their respective secrets. Gotham City would crush Clark in more ways than the world has, it's not a place meant to answer to his brand of justice. And Bruce finds Metropolis intolerable. ]

We were both dealing with Luthor.

[ Found they worked together better than they worked apart. Alfred is writing a glowing review of this embellishment somewhere. ]

That's not what I came here to say.

[ Her chance to ask what questions she wants before he changes the subject. ]

[mayarah]

Luthor? Lex Luthor?

[ kara's lips press together. she never dealt with lex luthor herself, but she's heard about him. about everything that's happened. ] He's been in prison for years. [ so has bruce been working with clark all this time and clark never mentioned him?

or this is something else. kara can't make sense of it yet, but she's not suspicious. curious, confused. ] What did you want to say?

[beknight]

The very same.

[ Alternate universes are above his paygrade; Kara's from the future until we get Jossed. ]

You've been awake here before. [ He narrows his eyes, studying her. ] You don't seem to remember that.

[mayarah]

What?

[ kara leans back in her chair, staring for a long moment. he's serious. he's serious and his heart rate hasn't picked up when he said it and there's nothing at all to indicate that he's lying. ] Are you sure?

[ that doesn't make sense. ]

[beknight]

I have proof, if you want to see it.

[ He takes out his phone and scrolls to messages sent from user FIREFALLS, a reference she'd recognise as Kryptonian. He's ready to turn the screen towards her if she asks. ]

[mayarah]

Yeah.

[ of course kara wants to see it. even before he turns the screen to her, she's leaning forward again, frowning. ]

[beknight]

[ He offers her the phone without hesitation. ]

[mayarah]

[ she looks through the messages, and — she doesn't remember any of that, but there's no doubt that she could have written any and all of them. they're just the kinds of things she would write. there are references to things she knows. ]

How is that possible?

[beknight]

The official story is there's corruption of data from the Storm.

[ If she wants to believe that, Bruce will let her. Sometimes it's easier to accept like that — it's just that he's not wired for that. ]

[mayarah]

[ kara can be naive at times, but she isn't stupid. ]

You don't?

[beknight]

It's one explanation among many possibilities.

[ The convenient one which invites no questions and tolerates little investigation. That's what makes it suspicious. ]

[mayarah]

Do you think the Orbiters are lying?

[ they seem all right. after all, they saved them all, didn't they? ]

[beknight]

I think the Orbiters operate on different rules from us. [ BUT ] There's no reason not to believe them. We've spoken several times, and you have absolutely no memory of it.

[ There's no recognition in her eyes, at all. He'll believe the evidence that he sees. ]

[mayarah]

No.

[ there's a moment's hesitation, before she forges on: ] Were we friends?

[beknight]

[ He rests his hand on his chin, where it covers his mouth, then straightens. ]

[ Some things are simple. They deserve to be. ]

Yes.

[mayarah]

[ that's — great news. kara wants to be friends with him. she wants to be friends with anyone her cousin likes, and she assumes (and hopes) that clark likes this guy. if he knows clark's secret, probably that's the case.

she smiles, bright and open. ]

Great!

[ the smile dims a little, a moment later. ] I'm sorry I don't remember anything about you. Will you tell me again?

[beknight]

[ He nods. ]

Do me a favour. Check for eavesdroppers.

[ She doesn't need to look around for that, only listen carefully with that excellent hearing of hers. ]

[mayarah]

[ so he knows about her, too. if they were friends, that stands to reason; kara knows that no matter what she says, she's terrible at keeping secrets.

she focuses, for a moment, no outward sign of it except for a slight frown pulling at her brows. ]

There's no one.

[beknight]

[ Good girl. He nods. ]

Where do you want to start?

[ Anyone else, and there's no way he'd begin with that. But an open hand, and she's a good person, like Clark. They can start with it. ]

[mayarah]

Do you —

[ she thinks for a moment. ] Are you a superhero, too? Like Clark.

[beknight]

[ The idea of what he is being anything remotely in the same league is amusing. Bruce shakes his head. ]

I prefer the term vigilante.

[mayarah]

Oh.

[ kara tips her head a little. she has some ideas about that term, but that isn't saying they're his ideas, too. ] Why?

[beknight]

[ No bright colours, for one. And most people aren't happy to see him. ]

It's where I started. You have to remember where you come from. I think you know something about that.

[mayarah]

[ kara glances away at that, memories of krypton a heavy weight right now, with the loss of earth making old wounds feel fresh. ]

Of course.

[ but after a moment, she looks back at him again. ] So what do you do? Do you have powers? And are you doing things here, too?

[beknight]

No powers.

[ I'm human. But that's cruelty to say out loud, and Bruce isn't in the habit of pain without purpose. ]
