A little pride upon the shelf

Who: Abelas ([personal profile] getoutofmytemple), Rhys ([personal profile] rhygret), Jyn Erso ([personal profile] insurgent), Venom ([personal profile] poolhall_killer), Zevran ([personal profile] agradecido), possibly Angel ([personal profile] r3f4c70r3d) & assorted visitors, neighbors & hangers on!
What: Neighbor funtimes!!!
When: Mid-September through October
Where: The apartment residence where they all live
Warning(s):
- mentions of terrorism and the fallout thereof
- definitely language
- possibly nudity, I mean Zev lives there y'all know how he is

[ Setting so far: Finding the starter housing too small and too open to the general populace, Zevran moved out of house #4 and into an apartment with his co-worker at Shades Darker, Venom. Somehow, Rhys, Abelas and Jyn opted to move in right next door. Shenanigans ensue! ]

[He cocked his head back at that... "cure". That made no sense at all. If it were indeed that simple surely his people would have figured it out. Of course if this was how humans treated their ailments it was no wonder they were so far behind the Elvhen.]

For all of your "advanced society" your people could not come up with a better cure than boiled root vegetables and a nap?

Trust me dude...if I had a health hypo I'd take it okay?

[ Rhys grumbles and pinches the bridge of his nose, leering through his fatigue. ]

Colds aren't really a big deal. People get them all the time and you just gotta wait them out.

[He just continues to look confused, because that went against what he knew of illness. Not that he had ever actually... seen someone with an illness before.]

My understanding was that illness was fatal.

rhygret: (how does this work)

[personal profile] rhygret 2017-10-25 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Some of them sure but not all of them! This is just a cold. Everyone gets them, it's like...normal. It sucks for a few days but then you get over it and you feel okay again.

[ Little does Rhys know, however... :'|

He runs a hand through his head, exhaling. ]

I'm going to be fine. Really.
getoutofmytemple: ([screaming internally])

[personal profile] getoutofmytemple 2017-10-27 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Sounds fake but okay.]

Not everyone gets them, shemlen.

[Back to shemlen now that this one isn't dying, and he doesn't have to be nice. At least he used Rhys' name a grand total of once now. Consider it a compliment.]

If you say. I will defer to your judgement on the matter [MISTAKE.] since you would have more experience than I.
rhygret: (I am so smart it hurts)

[personal profile] rhygret 2017-10-27 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
My name is Rhys. You can use it you know.

[ No he's still going to be petty about this!! He doesn't go around calling Abelas "elf" okay, he's got the humanitarian high ground here so far is that what you want Abelas? For Rhys to be better at something than you? ]

But yes, I do have a lot experience. [ HE SNIFFS. ] I've had tons of colds before.
getoutofmytemple: (what?)

[personal profile] getoutofmytemple 2017-10-28 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[He dismissively waved off the bit about Rhys' name. He already said it once, that was enough. He's not human, humanitarianism does not apply to him. He considers himself very generous and understanding since he actually does consider most mortals as "people", unlike the majority of the Elvhen back in his day.

Therefore he is exempt from being nice to them.
]

How is it your kind can survive such things many times, yet when my people were afflicted death was almost certain?

[And he is actually asking the question seriously, since Rhys is claiming to have the experience. There was something to be said that he considered the other competent enough to answer.]

I...don't know?

[ Rhys rubs the back of his neck awkwardly because...yeah, that's a pretty heavy topic. He doesn't want to say "humans are better" or anything like that because he's pretty sure that has nothing to do with it. Rhys puts his foot into his own mouth enough already. ]

I guess we're just used to it. We get sick a lot and if we get better we get antibodies and those help us fight off other infections and stuff...? Does that make sense?

[ a pause ]

Do you guys know about that sort of stuff? Bacteria and viruses and vaccines?
getoutofmytemple: (orly)

[personal profile] getoutofmytemple 2017-11-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Well now it's Abelas' turn to be the "Rhys" of the conversation, and asking questions the other would likely find rather obvious.]

Antibodies?

[The question alone was probably an answer in and of itself, but he continued anyway.]

Why would we? It was never something we had seen until the advent of humans, and it was far easier to simply avoid them than make sense of all their illnesses and plagues.

[ It makes feel both really smart and knowledgeable...a really surprised? Behind the assholeish smugness and all that. It's really hard fro him to fathom what it must be like for this sort of thing not to be basic everyday knowledge.

He won't lord it over Abelas's head or anything like that, but he'll definitely sound just a little bit incredulous that he somehow isn't aware of all this. ]

It's...yikes, okay. Let's just start with the fact that the stuff that makes you sick are these really tiny organisms that attack your body. Those are viruses and bacteria. When your body fights them off it makes stuff called antibodies which basically make it so that you can never catch that kind of illness again.

Humans have a lot of those, because we get sick a lot. We're sort of used to it? But we also have a ton of different medicines to treat that sort of thing too, and vaccines. Those are basically synthetic antibodies made in a lab so that you don't have to get sick to never catch it again.

[personal profile] getoutofmytemple 2017-11-05 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
[The tone did not bother him, Abelas was not one to dish out something he could not handle himself. To him, information was information regardless of delivery. Still, he found himself only loosely grasping the concept Rhys was describing. It did invite quite a number of interesting questions at least.]

Curious. Such would imply that the Elvhen had a superior defense against such ailments if we had not seen such things in recorded memory, however our vulnerability to them would prove otherwise.

[Of course there was no longer any real way to gauge such things, the empire and its people had long passed. Even if it had not, it was hardly his place to start making inquiries about medical matters.]

It matters little now.

Well it could also be that you just didn't have any diseases or anything near you. Or they brought ones that you guys weren't used to. But...yeah.

[ Rhys shrugs in surrender. ]

It probably doesn't matter so much...now. Sorry?
