open: clean up
[ It takes her a while to actually get back on her feet again, the dizziness from the waves of panic making it so that after the actual explosion went off she'd needed help keeping herself together. Even after things have calmed a little, emotions are running rampant which isn't exactly fun when you can hear a person's emotions.
She doesn't let it stop her from helping out, mind you.
Forcing a smile, she moves to whoever seems to need some help. It hasn't quite been an hour yet so she doesn't really know how serious this is but-- ] Hey, do you need some help with that?
open: therapy
[ Likewise, if anyone else seems to have been caught up in the blast, she'll scoot over to them whether it's a PC character or NPC. Whether your character needs help, or sees her trying to help she'll be actually pretty gentle about it. ]
Do you want me to get you a blanket?
[ It's good to keep the body temperature up in this kind of situation, after all. ]
I'm willing to listen if you're worried. Is there anyone you need to contact?
open: a few days later at home
[ It took a few days for her to finally wear herself out, and after being put on house arrest (or at least something close to it, for how little she actually slowed down the past few days) she's been texting people she knows to try and get visitors.
Also to ask for something that isn't chicken noodle soup...
If anyone visits they'll find her come to the door, draped over with blankets and a scarf around the bottom half of her face to stop her from sneezing on other people. ]
Hey... [ Her voice sounds a lot less chipper too. ]

[ After their conversation about having to keep to window shopping for the time being, it seems like a good idea to have support in not buying everything she sees. For one thing, she doesn't have the money for it. For another, she doesn't need half the things she keeps seeing in the market. Even food, Athena seems to have 0 control over her spending habits which means it's handy to have someone there to tell her "no" when it comes down to it.
Besides, it's nice to just be out and about with a friend.
Or it was anyway.
The stage is being set while they're looking at a stand's different fruits. Athena had been contemplating picking something out as a change from the pretty cheap options Edgeworth had picked up for them when she picks up on some discord in the area. It's only slight - a strange thrill of excitement that she can't quite place.
It's why her head lifts up to look at JJ, expression confused. ]

[ After about ten or fifthteen minutes she manages to get herself back together again. By then, people are already rushing around to try and either catch the person who left the explosive, or are trying to help anyone caught up in this. It's still overwhelming to stay in the market district area, but she's managing.
It's as she stumbles around one stand (gripping onto the table for a second to try and fight vertigo from the waves of emotions she's hearing) she spots Lance trying to help a person who had been caught in the blast. ]
Are they okay...? [ It's hard to imagine most of these people have any experience with things like this though. For her... it's easy to remember the state Apollo had been in after he was caught in the courtroom blast while protecting Juniper. ]

[ Running after people to ensure they're mentally sound kept Athena busy. She'd done pretty well at ignoring the symptoms thus far. Every sneeze was hidden by a scarf that she convinced people was a new fashion statement instead of the tie she was wearing before, every cough hidden in the same manner. She was sneaky when she blew her nose and pushing past aches in her body wasn't exactly a first with how hard she's pushed herself with exercise in the past.
But without rest, the body can't recover. Eating to make up for it wouldn't help with that either.
Yet, Athena can't finish her day without visiting those she knows in Stasis, giving them an update on how things are processing. Trucy's visit is pretty quick, an update to let her know how Phoenix is doing in case he hasn't managed to drop by.
With Apollo it's a little longer, telling him about how something similar to home might be going on here, that she isn't sure yet but they're looking into it - or at least Phoenix and Miles are. That she's been trying to stay strong for other people who need her help now.
It's when she's trying to find the last person that her knees give out when she's a few pods away. ]

[ She hasn't exactly been the most forthcoming about how caught up in the blast she'd been. When have they ever communicated on those kind of fronts anyway though? For one thing, worrying him unnecesarily seemed like a silly thing to do when she was still able to keep going. She was fine. It's only when she collapsed in stasis and Eggsy had to help her back that she was actually starting to admit that okay... maybe was was sick.
She might have stayed indoors most of her childhood, then in studying sessions, but she's been fit as a fiddle the past few years and it's frustrating to think all that self care and good luck had gone to waste.
Besides, all she can feel right now is miserable for herself as she pulls a third blanket over herself and seems to become more and more like a cacoon as the days go by.
When Phoenix gets back, he'll find just her eyes peeking out from the blanket, like a crocodile looking up from under the water. ]

clean-up!
It's a sort of--grim familiarity, maybe? Been there, done that. She looks over as Athena approaches and smiles gently]
I'm not sure where to even begin. Everything's rather chaotic right now, huh? [Her voice is as light as always, though, and she eyes Athena carefully] Are you okay?
:*
I'm trying to make sure everyone is covered and kept warm, as that usually helps with shock. There's a lot that needs to be cleared away though. No worries, I'm fine! [ She flashes Sanzang a peace sign, grinning at her. ] Let's get some things cleared up so people can start sorting everything out.
no subject
[Her tone is light and fairly teasing, but her eyebrows raise and she's eyeing Athena carefully.]
We can work for a little while at least. Then it's break time! Because even rescuers need breaks! [It's totally fine to be a hypocrite when it's for someone else's sake, okay?]
no subject
Well, I'm at least talking about it to other people... are you?
[ Does that even count as a victory??? Who knows. ] But that sounds like a good plan to work with. Shall we get started?
no subject
I talk to my reflection every morning! [Stop.
God where do they even begin though. Sanzang stands there for a moment or two longer before moving to the nearest destroyed vendor and starts hauling some of the debris aside.]
I know this is going to sound grim, but we should pick through for survivors. [Or...not survivors.]
Thankfully there seems to be fewer causalities than I would've expected... This is really going to turn the opinion on us refugees for a lot of people, isn't it... [She's just thinking out loud mostly]
no subject
Oh! [ She seems surprised at first, before she's giving the other girl a big smile. ] Me too! Or well, I practice some of the stuff I learned for the courtroom anyway.
[ Why?? Well, nevermind that. Time to get serious! ]
Well, the explosion was less destructive with materials and more gas...? Kind of, anyway. It's a little hard to describe. Hopefully it'll mean we won't find any dead bodies in all this.
no subject
That's... Good, at least. I think. Though chemical warfare has it's one huge list of problems... [She trails off and sighs harshly.] Wars and battles and things used to be so much more simple, you know? Why does humanity do this sort of thing...
no subject
[ She starts sorting through things, trying to be as careful as possible. ]
Though... from a psychological perspective I'd say not all of humanity is like it. Some people are beyond help though, and it tends to be them who lead the charge on these things.
no subject
[She hums thoughtfully.] But it's still... Hm. It's the same sort of thing that happens everywhere. It just seems to get worse with time.
[But Sanzang grins and gives a little dismissive wave anyhow] Well, they always say things get worse before they get better, right? I'm sure if we work hard we'll see an end to this sort of thing! Not entirely, but maybe mostly...
open, a few days later at home!!
...So he goes a little overboard.
By the time he shows up at Athena's door, he's gathered: three (3) pints of Ken & Larry's Ice Cream of varying flavors, one (1) can of alphabet soup (hey, it's not chicken noodle!), two (2) pairs of thick, woolly socks (even though it's...not particularly cold...), one (1) deck of cards, and one (1) copy of the infamous board game, Clue. Or whatever Olympia's equivalent of Clue is.
Unsurprisingly, his arms are a little full, and it's a miracle he's able to even ring the doorbell. When she answers it, though, she's greeted by a beaming grin. Man, it's good to just see her on her feet. That's enough to push aside how worn and weary he is - for the moment, at least. ]
Hey! Uh - is this a bad time? I can come back!
[ Never mind that he double- and triple-checked before coming over. He just - doesn't want to impose. ]
what a good bean
It just seemed like a bad idea to worry him too much, especially when she was more concerned with ensuring everyone else felt okay after the panic.
When she sees who it is, she lets the blankets drop a little so her head is a little less covered, and kind of waddles aside to let him in. ]
No, it's fine really-- [ Thankfully she's wearing a scarf she can sneeze into, so Prompto is Germ Free. ]
Thanks for coming over.
he tries...
Hey, no problem. [ He straightens, his smile turning a bit apologetic. Gods. She looks so sick...just like everyone who's caught it has. Maybe that'd be a warning sign to him, that he should take a step back and look after himself for a bit, but...
Nah. He's not going to do that. ]
Just thought you could use a little company to keep you from going stir crazy.
https://youtu.be/-7akjeomUck?t=56s
You aren't wrong about that. It's been a long time since I've been indoors all the time like this.
[ She sighs, helping him sort through the things he brought to put the ice cream away. She puts the can of soup on the counter, and reaches to tug on a pair of the socks while she's still moving about. It makes more sense to start wearing them now while she feels freezing. ]
Oh! Did you want to play a card game then? Or what's that-- [ She points towards the board game. ]
he tries all the time......
He looks pleased as punch as she sorts through his offerings, the whole bundle curated just for an afternoon in while sick. It's good to know he hasn't completely missed the mark in bringing things she might like. He's actually make a difference!
It's nice. ]
I'm always down for a game, but I found this one in a shop last week and I've been dying to play it...
[ Since he still doesn't have a TV to play video games on. Old-fashionedy board games would just have to do! ]
I think it's about solving a murder, or something.
in this institution....
Still, the entertainment might actually be nicer than the ice cream given how little time she spends indoors lately. She's grown up to be quite active, though that had also been her downfall for her not getting enough rest. ]
Then let's get it set up in the living room. Maybe when the others get back then can join us as well... though I doubt that'll be for a while yet.
[ She pauses. ] Do you want a drink or anything? I can direct you to where we keep things if you don't want me to touch anything first.
and he prays...
So he's moving quickly towards the living room with the box of Clue, setting it down on the coffee table as he starts to unpack its contents. ]
Nah, don't worry about it. You get a free pass from being a hostess when you're sick! [ A light chuckle as he glances warmly up at her. ]
Thanks, though. [ And then: ] Who else lives here with you?
no subject
—he's fine, we just found his mom...
[ he quiets as the young man rushes out of his hands and into the arms of an approaching woman. he spares a moment to look them over, before turning to athena with a worried expression. ]
How are you?
no subject
[ Though once the young man rushes off, Lance's attention is on her. She smiles it off, of course, taking a deep breath. ] I'm fine!
[ It definitely comes out louder than necessary, taking Apollo's Chords of Steel training to heart apparently. ] Really... I'm fine. I'm more worried about other people. It's strange to think this isn't the first time I've seen something like this happen, huh?
[ Maybe that makes it worse??? ]
How are you doing?
no subject
[ his smile is as strained as forced as hers, and for a moment there's just... this quiet second of understanding.
they're both fine. Fine. ]
Were you around when it happened...?
no subject
I was... [ She pauses, hesitates, on how much she should tell him. ] around here, actually.
no subject
—around?
[ he straightens up, brows knitting together. he steps towards her, already reaching out to grasp an arm as if she might suddenly topple over any second. ]
Were you hurt? Were you hit??
no subject
Truthfully, part of his investigations were sheerly out of worry. He had heard that Athena was fine through Lance, but he hadn't heard hide nor hair from her since she first checked in with him. And it had been a few days. Was it like Athena to not come home for a couple of nights on end? He never much hung out with her outside the office so he wouldn't have known.
None the less part of him had always seen Athena as his responsibility. Even if it wasn't his fault that she was here in El Nysa, he was still the one to bring her to America and take care of her during her training as an attorney. The feeling only naturally carried through even as their careers and old lives had ended.]
Ah! Athena!
[It was a mixed feeling that came over him as he saw her there under the covers. Relief that she was safe and at home conflicting with the sight of her eyes feebly peaking out from under the covers of the couch.]
So you were hit by the blast. Where were you all this time?
[Stern fatherly disapproval mode activated.]
no subject
By leaving short messages of saying she's fine just busy, she's hoped that it's curbed some of his worries a little - but it backfires after she collapses from over doing it while trying to hide the fact that yes, she is indeed sick.
She groans when he walks in, finally having to admit it but-- ]
It isn't like I haven't been back at all... [ She trails off, pulling the blankets closer to herself. ] ...I was just trying to make sure everyone got the support they needed.
no subject
And you're sick. What at you doing pushing yourself like this?]
You can do all that without overworking yourself you know.
[Says the guy who's been investigating the sight of the blast and figuring ways to aid the businesses that have been affected, all the while worrying about his missing housemates.
None the less, a small sigh escaped him, his shoulders slouching as he looked his fallen junior attorney over.]
Do you want me to get you some tea? You should be drinking plenty of fluids.
no subject
And Athena, for all her psychic powers, feels familiar. With her, it's almost like they're just a normal pair of friends, walking along and idly commenting on whatever caught their eye in the market.
He's committed to having a good time, and clutching this positive attitude, even when there seems to be something strange in the air, and even as it grows enough to distract Athena, a furrow to her brow as she looks around. ]
What's up?
[ Tearing his gaze away from a pile of organic squash, he meets Athena's look, guileless and easy. This is just a good time between friends. ]
no subject
It feels better to actually just spend time with someone as a friend - that, for her, is a new experience as well.
She concentrates on trying to pin point where the emotion is coming from, but it's drowned out a bit by the sounds of other people around them. One angry customer trying to protest the cost of a kilo of apples, a happy child as their mother just bought them a lollipop, another sad because they're having a bad day--
Then the spike of excitement in the rush of things, comes from a shady guy close by. ]
Something doesn't sound ri--
[ She doesn't even finish it off though, because it's too alike the courthouse bombing. There's no beeping, no countdown to say anything is going to happen but that person runs and leaves something behind.
All Athena has time to do is yell get down as she pushes at JJ's shoulders, putting all her weight into it because there's no time to run and being on the floor will hopefully help. ...Right? ]
no subject
Mostly because JJ doesn't often think about or expect dire situations to happen.
But she seems unsettled, and he focuses on that instead, wondering if something was bothering her about the prices, or if some creep was leering at her from across the road. And really, those options, as undesirable as they are, were probably better than what actually happens.
What actually happens is JJ is dumbstruck, first by Athena yelling at him, and then the explosion that roars through the entire district.
It's a curious sort of explosion: colour blasting through the area, thick and purple, the unrelenting push of air enough to rock JJ off his feet and falling back onto the ground despite Athena's attempts to warn him. But there's no shrapnel, and there's no searing heat enough boil the skin right off their flesh. It's just jarring, and JJ doesn't even know what's happening when he opens his eyes again, wondering why he can feel the rough gravel underneath his palms as he sits on the road, shocked and slightly bruised from knocking against the stand as he fell, but otherwise uninjured.
There's a quiet that spreads as the air settles, and everyone around them tries to process what happened, and JJ is no exemption. Eyes wide and ears ringing, he reaches out to Athena, settling a hand on her arm, but otherwise too afraid to say anything.
Who knows what else might be out there. ]
no subject
Athena's eyes are wet before she can even process it all, and by the time she can it's too late -- there's too much to process. Her hands move from JJ's shoulders up to her own ears, head burying against him as her jaw clenches and her eyes stay wide open, glassing over from being so overwhelmed by it all.
People are already running about by now, trying to work out what happened, frantically trying to get help.
It's hard to pinpoint who actually is calmer than who in this scenario with people all over the market area rushing in to try and find out what happened. ]
no subject
Right now, he feels numb. Not shocked or scared, but rather like a void, as if it's impossible for him to even accept that this is happening to him. He feels nothing, but the time around them passes slow, and when the child cries, and motion returns to the area, he can't hear it, like he's not even there.
Except when Athena's hands move from him, and then he zeroes into, uncomprehending at first as he watches her, tears in her eyes and frozen.
Then it comes: concern and confusion, and he's moving, shifting onto his knees so that he can get her arms around her. He doesn't know what to do other than pull her in toward his chest. She fits there easily, small and slight in comparison to his larger frame. ]
Athena?
no subject
It's a comfort when he pulls her in, but his own heart isn't exactly stable enough to latch onto either. The mix of emotions feel cloudier than normal, like he doesn't quite know how to feel either. She can't say she blames him for that, no one should be used to this kind of thing -- but except maybe Phoenix or Apollo.
She sucks air in sharply and curls her hands even more tightly over hear ears, dipping her head down in the hope that his arms might actually block out some of the noise as well.
It's too much. So much that she can't even get words out to ask for help. ]
no subject
He hadn't done much helping of his own.
And he doesn't know how, right now, with Athena starting to shake, but seeing her like this quells some of his own panic and confusion over what's happening. It doesn't really matter anymore.
Seeing the way her hands are over her ears, the dots start to connect, gaze wandering around the chaos in the district, before going back to her. He doesn't know what to do, so he just takes the most obvious route: he picks her up. Her weight isn't much, but his arms tremble slightly, weak from the shock of the explosion, but he holds on steadfast and then he just—
Goes.
Doesn't know where, or if it's making anything of a difference, but he keeps going, past people heading toward the commotion and anyone that might be giving him a strange glance he just goes until he's in an alley, out of breath. His back hits the wall there, until he's sliding down, more out of breath than he'd expected of himself but, well. ]
Is this better?
[ Hopefully. His head falls forward, forehead resting against her crown as his eyes close from the fatigue. How do you stop hearing? ]
no subject
His time in the Marines and at Kingsman mean this isn't the first prolonged time away from home — but he'll never return to his council flat now. And worrying over how his family is coping without him is something entirely different than seeing them asleep in pods, like something out of a sci-fi film.
As he rounds a corner, he spots a shock of red hair. Odds are it's someone he knows, innit? The personal nature of the area almost makes him turn back, not wanting to intrude. However, he soon realises that the angle is off, the ginger hair and bright attire too close to the ground — ]
Athena! [ said loudly, echoing in the metallic room, but not yet panicked. He quickens his pace, sliding to a stop before her and swiftly dropping to squat beside her. His words tumble out with more urgency. ] Oi, Athena.
[ On instinct, his hands finds her wrist, squeezing lightly and checking her pulse. ]
no subject
Maybe she should have though. Her and Apollo might be a little too similar in how stubborn they can be. Especially when it comes to protecting others.
When Eggsy reaches to touch her wrist he'll find her skin feels like it's on fire - unnaturally hot. Her eyes open at the touch, but they're glassy, and she feels dizzy from pushing herself too hard. ]
Sorry, I'm fine. I'm... [ She has to turn her head away, ducking it down into the scarf she's pulled on to let out a sneeze, another two or three following the first in rapid succession. ]
I'm not finished yet.
no subject
Shifting his hand from her wrist, he threads his fingers through her own, applying light pressure. Concern bleeds into his features, twisting his mouth into a frown and creasing his brows. ]
[ gently — ] Might be time for a break. [ He cants his head, taking in her unfocused expression, and brings his other hand to her shoulder, steadying. ] How long have you been feeling sick, Athena?
[ the question is mainly an attempt to gauge how out of it she is, and if he'll be able to convince her to go home. ]
no subject
Wha...? [ She sounds out of it even when she lifts her head, trying to push herself up again because no no no she's fine. She just had a few more steps to go! Simon's pod was still pretty close. Close enough to be in view, actually. ] I'm fine, re-- [ She has to stop suddenly to sneeze into her elbow though, luckily not sneezing on him. He's safe. ]
no subject
Athena. [ His voice is firmer than before, taut with concern. He keeps his pace measured and even, given her confused reply and aborted attempt to stand. ]
I think you need to get home. Can I help you do that? [ a beat. He wouldn't normally do this, but — ] Please.
A few days later.
[For the most part Miles had let the girl rest as much as she could. Poor thing looked worse for wear.]
Iwas going to lecture you about pushing past your limitations but I'm certain Phoenix had already given you an earful. However, I should let you know that he has been worried sick about you.
That said, I'll get you some orange juice, and some soup. You need to nourish yourself as much as you can at this stage in order to fight this flu off.
dad #2 why this
--was already told I overdid it. It isn't that I wanted to worry him either but, [ A wry smile crosses her face. ] It isn't like I've really been sick like this either. I think at the start I didn't want to believe it was happening.
[ She pauses. ] You've been investigating what happened, haven't you?
[ She isn't going to talk about the food and drink right now, because knowing them both they'll make sure she has plenty of that. She just doesn't want to fall asleep again without finding out what's going on. ]
