Scanning me. Why would you do that?

[ but she can imagine why he would. more importantly, and sharp despite the alcohol making her tongue heavier: ] What's it say?

Because you showed up with a half-empty bottle of liquor. [ and wanted that instead of coffee so, you know. He's curious. ] It says stuff like your name, how old you are, that kind of thing.

And that you should probably take a cup of coffee or two.

[ He shrugs. ]

How much I drink is none of your business.

[ her lips press together. most of her anger isn't even directed at him, though she hates the thought of him knowing things about her that she hasn't had the choice to tell him herself. khlyen used to hold pieces of her history hostage for so long, dutch never knowing who she really was.

she knows now, but the thought of someone doing something even remotely related still stings. ] Neither is any of that. [ which— ] What name does it say?

...Dutch? Why? Should it say something else?

[ Rhys gets the feeling he should deactivate his eye, so he’s just going to...do that. And maybe not mention her drinking again as he muffles a cough with his hand and gestures her further into the apartment’s living room where he’s obviously been making camp the last few days. There’s a blanket and a pillow that are well-worn into the couch and a myriad of half-used tissues that he’s failed to land in the nearby garbage bin, but he takes care of that now that she’s here. ]

[ of course there's another name there. you are yalena of family yardeen, khlyen's voice echoes in her ear. she doesn't hate khlyen anymore, can't because she knows too much now of his motivation and his reasons, but where half the time she's glad for the reminder of him, the other half she wishes he'd just leave her the hells alone. even after his death, she still can't escape him.

but despite her unforgiving tone, she follows rhys into the apartment, taking a swig of her whiskey on the way. ]

Looks cozy. [ she offers after a moment. it doesn't; it looks like he's sick. ]

You mean it's a mess, [ Rhys corrects with a wry, tired smile. But he appreciates the attempt to smooth his gross sick bed over, clearing a space off for her as he hunkers down and reaches for another tissue to quickly blow his nose. ]

I appreciate you coming over though. Most people are pretty keen on keeping their distance right now. Which I get, I mean who wants t-to be sick right?

Hells, yes.

[ dutch's lips twist into a grin. she can forgive him for the scan, seeing how he seems to have stopped, seeing how it seems to have revealed nothing important that she'd like to keep hidden. she can forgive him, but — ] For the record, if you scan me again, I'm going to punch you so hard you wish you'd never had that eye installed. [ her tone is casual. conversational.

no scanning of the dutch, got it? ]

[ Point taken. Rhys winces a little with a squint, but nods slowly and sinks back into his side of the couch slowly. ]

Rrright. No scanning...got it.

People here really have a problem with that huh?

Question is, why don't you?

[ she sits down on the couch next to him, one leg curled underneath her body. far enough away that they're not quite touching; she did promise john she'd be careful about getting infected. ]

Because it's normal where I come from? I guess? The whole reason I got my ECHO eye was to help get ahead in programming and data mining. It's actually really useful, does all sorts of things. It helps me hack, tells me stuff about the local plant life...

[ You would not believe the number of ferns he has scanned. ]

[ just. don't scan her, buddy. ] The kinda shit the Company'd pull, I guess.

[ She says "The Company" and Rhys just assumes she means Hyperion. It gets a huff of a laugh from him as he shrugs his shoulders. ]

Yeah, well...it's Hyperion. If someone isn't watching you at all times that'd be weirder.

Not whatever Hyperion is.

[ get with the programme, rhys, she means a company called the company ]

...Wait, what?

[ RHYS IS CONFUSED. ]

Hyperion's a company though.

A company, but not The Company. [ will verbal capital letters make this situation clearer? ]

Oh, you mean from your world?

[ APPARENTLY. ]

Why would I know what kind of shit a company from your world would pull?

[rhygret]

I don't know, it just sounded like...you knew or something? Just saying "the company" doesn't really provide a lot of information to go off of.

It's the name. The Company.

[ dutch shrugs. ] Not very inventive.

[rhygret]

No kidding... Yeesh. Doesn't that get confusing back home for you guys? I mean they really couldn't have picked a less descriptive name if they tried.

Nah. Everyone knows the Company in the Quad.
