I think I can handle whatever you dish out.

[ the cockiness is routine more than anything, but it's a skin dutch has worn for years, something comfortable and familiar. it hides some of the anger, some of the desperation that she feels at the loss of johnny and alvis. (they are, the both of them, bargaining chips in the hands of the orbiters. dutch knows this, and hates it.) ]

Why would we? [ talk about it, that is. it's none of anyone's business how much she drinks, is it? maybe johnny's or d'avin's because they're her partners, because they rely on her to lead, but — they're not here and even if they were, they aren't killjoys here because there are no killjoys.

and she isn't leading the war. d'avin is the general their army needs, not dutch, even if she's been the one who united them all in the fight against the hullen. ]

[ the fight goes out of dutch almost immediately at that, at the easy admission that he cares. quietly, like she's repeating something she's heard many times (which she has), she says: ] Caring makes you weak, did you know?

[ right now, it feels true, though she knows it isn't. she knows johnny makes her stronger, makes her better — but losing him again hurts.
