[ Dutch's glass of whiskey is topped off. ]

You don't know any of them. Except maybe Johnny. Did you know Johnny?

I met him, yes.

[ for a moment, her tone is soft. fond, nostalgic. then it tips into bitterness. ] He was fighting because he's too bloody good for his own good.
[ johnny's been dutch moral's compass ever since she met him. ]

He's gone, you know.
[ not an answer. very much one at the same time. ]

[ He smooths down his moustache. ]
Hence your remarkable unhappiness.

[ that's laughable. ] I'm angry. [ she is. she's trying hard to be. ]

Don't mean to offend. [ Then, lowering them again: ] Why is it better to be angry than to be sad?
no subject
[ she doesn't tip to the side, though she almost wants to. after a moment, she admits: ] Anger hurts less.

[ He ignores the first comment; he can tell she's on the verge of too-drunk-to-talk. ]
Or at least it just hurts others. [ He turns his head very slightly to the side. ] So is he back in stasis?
no subject

I don't do that anymore. Killing people. [ unless it's self-defence. or necessary. or they're hullen. or all of the above. but she tries. ]

A mercenary who avoids dealing death? It does sound like something out of a fairy-tale.

[ funny, by. except it isn't; she was forced to kill all of her childhood and youth. of course she wanted to stop when she ran away from khlyen. ]

What - do you hear me laughing? It does. But don't get offended - I take fairy-tales quite seriously. I myself spent the first ten years of my life frightened into obedience by the prospect of an iron-toothed witch whose hut stood on chicken legs. A fairy-tale princess has far more power than a human woman does.
