[ It's an obvious, pointed redirection of the subject (a strange reaction to gratitude—if anything, it was a compliment), but Yusuke goes along with it, absently dipping his brush into more ink. ]

It can be. [ There's no sense in playing at machismo: frankly, he feels awful. He waits for his hand to steady before putting it to paper, though it takes longer than he'd like to suppress a shiver. ] But my failing health is all the more reason to paint while I can, is it not?

[ He takes the brief spikes of frenetic energy and channels them into his work, driving his focus into each sheet of paper he rushes to fill, frowning before he realizes it. ] If I'm too weak to pick up a brush tomorrow, then I will regret not having done so today.

[ wow excuse you he's a drama queen dying

Anyway, he'd chafe if someone any older were chastising him, but to hear it from one of his peers... Yusuke's brush pauses, which is a feat in and of itself, if only for a moment. He picks back up at the line he'd started, privately bemoaning how uneven it looks now. ]

Perhaps you're right. [ No, he definitely is. ] Still...

[ How does he put this in perspective. ] Are you familiar with Goya? A virtuoso of his time—he fell mysteriously ill and never quite recovered. And yet rather than retiring his easel, it only raised the curtain on a second era of his works... None of the greats have ever allowed their art to collapse before their bodies have.

[ That's probably not even true, and he's rambling, but in his fever he hardly notices or cares. ]

My point is, that is a risk I'll gladly take. Also, could you move a little to the right?
