mercenary jobs #3 — open to all

Who: Anyone interested in taking some mercenary jobs via Aranea Highwind's offerings. This log is focused on Wyver and can be found on job boards across the city as well as personal handwaved texts.
What: Mercenary posting!
When: N/A
Where: N/A
Warning(s): Possible sex threads based off heat-event for this month. This was posted early for the holidays, btw. Happy Thanksgiving, etc!

Thank you for stopping by to check out this month's job postings for Highwind Hires — a freelance mercenary group!

Aranea Highwind will ICly be contacting characters and offering them jobs based off the assumption she will receive 30% of the cut.

JOB #1 — DOOR TO DOOR

With the abundance of new visitors, it seems there have been ample amounts of donations to the temple. Unfortunately, that is not enough. When you approach, you're stopped by a young woman named Igo who is requesting you help her: please pass out 100 pamphlets to refugees enlisting donations.

OUTCOMES:
- For all pamphlets passed out, the Shaman will pay you 100 Silver.

JOB #2 — DRAGON DERBY

In the West, you hear about this month's Wyver Derby, a small event where dragons are put to race on a track. It seems the fan favorite is Fangface but the newcomer Wingslash ranked high in their first few races. You're hired for body guard duty, keeping the peace and ensuring no riots occur. Enjoy drinks as you watch the show, try to bet for the right one.

OUTCOMES:
- Wingslash wins by a nose, so anyone who votes for that dragon will win double their bet.
- Those who bet on Fangface or any other participant will lose their bet.

JOB #3 — AFTERMATH

Tied to Job #2, the Derby went relatively smoothly... You're enjoying discounted drinks at the bar. It wasn't until you notice one of the ticketers cashing out a suspicious amount of extra money to a small group of people who very vocally complained about losing. As the small group leaves, you can either: report the ticketer or two, track them down.

OUTCOMES:
- If you simply report the ticketer, you'll be rewarded with an additional 125 Silver.
- If you track down the group, you'll find they're all in a small gambling ring, petty crooks that drank too much and most certainly had an inside connection. You must be ready for a fight — all 4 will attack you with fists and small pocket knives.

JOB #4 — VILE LITTLE THINGS

You were contracted directly from Aranea Highwind for a monster hunt. A Vileling that was once kept as a pet grew hostile in the past few weeks before finally escaping its owner in Old City and reeking havoc on pet-owners. Your job is to track it down before more pets are killed. Aranea instructed you to 'take care of it', but upon your journey, the Vileling owner (Bekins) has insisted you save it and bring it back to Murkhollow alive. Of course, they offer a good price.

OUTCOMES:
- Aranea is offering a flat 400 silver to wipe it out.
- You can lie or oppose Aranea's order, you which will gain negative CR from the mercenary leader. Bekins will reward you with 140 silver and you must find a way to return it to Murkhollow.

JOB #5 — RED NIGHT LIGHT

Bodyguard duty seems a bit more... mature tonight. With the week waning on and people acting on lust and emotions, there has been a bit more call for those looking to patrol the more savory areas of Wyver. You'll be paid a flat fee of 450 Silver for a night's worth of work.

There are three areas to watch over: a bordello, a herb shop, and a gang's rumored hide-out.

OUTCOMES:
- If you choose the bordello, you will find yourself playing body guard for one of the establishment's ... best worker and favorite client. You can peek in on the woman and her partner at the risk of being caught or you can escort them out afterwards. The woman offers a tip of 100 Silver and also the chance to have drinks with her...
- If you choose the herb shop, you will find yourself sensitive to the mix of aromas. A contact high ensures your inhibitions are loosened and with the lust in the air? Who knows what that means...
- If you choose the gang's rumored hideout, you will find illegal tusk and scale trading. You'll have to contend with 4 possible gang members all armed with weapons. Fight them or flee to report, you'll earn an additional 150 Silver.

Have fun! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me! These are all loosely based on your choices, so feel free to go wild with them. The outcomes only are indication of what the jobs would offer. If you're interested in having your character offer a job in the future, please let me know!

[ Well that…

That makes him blink actually. The way she phrases it -- it’s like suggesting something unthinkable. And he feels a little naked for a moment that he can’t see her expression and she pulls her hands back, eyes flickering for a moment as he tries to track her voice.

She was worried she’d hurt him? Really? ]

Why would it bother me? [ It’s nice actually. Warm. But that he won’t say… exactly.

Because if her ability is light… that’s right, when he’d found her sitting by a patient’s bedside, her hands had been glowing. That was it, wasn’t it. It even seemed to suit her. ]

Isn’t that why you worked at the clinic? To use it to help people feel better?

[ There's a small voice in her head that tells her to reach out, to give him a direction because he looks so strangely lost then. And she's torn by that, her hand hovering near to his and wanting to give that little bit of what could be considered reassurance, but keeping herself at a distance. Not quite touching.

Almost like standing on a precipice, because she's still reeling at the idea of him seeing that, of being worried about any number of things... but she still wants to offer him that bit of comfort. She isn't sure what to do, and that feeling is terrifying.

That only escalates when he speaks again, not only to say that that feeling didn't bother her (she's relieved, really), but to ask such a simple and well-meaning question. Lux freezes then, breath catching and looking bewildered. He thought— ]

That...

[ All she can do is stare at him, unsure of what to say or what to think. That he would assume that she could use that light to help others in that way, to let them know that it exists even if the same risks did not exist in this place... She can't.

She can shine her light, but at a distance, in ways that others might not see or understand.

Fingers curling into her palm, she doesn't quite pull her hand away. Looking away from him, she draws her lips together into a fine line, speaking not much louder than a whisper. Like it's something she doesn't want to say, or something she's worried that someone will hear. ]

...They can never know about that. No one should know about that.

[ ...?

If it were about embarrassment... about being uncomfortable with scared or disapproving looks, that'd be one thing. Allen himself... he used to be religious about wearing gloves to cover his left hand, and still is to a lesser degree. When he was younger he'd even tried to dye his hair so he wouldn't garner so much negative attention. He'd get that, wanting to keep things that stick out under wraps just because it's easier that way... but saying it like that—

...like that, it sounds like she's ashamed of her power itself. Like it's a bad thing; a dangerous thing.

Was it? Admittedly his memory is a bit foggy on the specifics, but he does remember her wielding light as a weapon when they fought the vileling. But just because it's a weapon doesn't mean it's bad. That it can't be used to sooth and help people. Even Innocence...

Even an akuma was soothed when destroyed by it. "It feels nice." And that gentle, peaceful sort of warm light he'd felt from her... was that what that level three in China had meant? It feels nice.. So saying 'no one should know about that'... ]

...Why?

[personal profile] rememberher 2017-12-22 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ And there is the question she hoped he wouldn't ask. Why. It's something that should be so simple, but even as he questions her Lux visibly winces and the hand near his clenches tightly.

How could she begin to answer that question of why she has to keep that part of her a secret? Why no one should know about that light (her affliction, that word and its meaning etched into her heart like a tattoo). That her people would never accept her kind. At best, they were seen and treated as less than human, and at worst... Mages were a darkness that need be purged from their pristine world, by an annuller's "cures", or by the fire of retribution.

How could she explain what that would mean to someone who had somewhere he fit so seemingly perfectly, who likely has no idea what it's like to be Wrong and to be afraid of what that means.

To fight with the light of your very being for a people who would label you as a heretic if they knew the truth. She was Demacian and she was Wrong, even if there are times when she struggles to fully believe that to be true.

(If she had been born anywhere else...)

She could lie or brush the question aside. Smile and give a reason that fit well enough that they would never need to speak of this again— ]

Because...

[ But she can't do that, not because it wouldn't be easy. It would be—she's used to this kind of lie. But because lying to him when he seems so earnest... she can't do that. So she takes a breath, closing her eyes as if something like that will help. ]

...If they knew, then I wouldn't have a place where I felt like I might belong.

[ — there is quite possibly nothing else she could have said that would struck him as hard as that does.

Not someone who left (had to leave) the place he'd loved the most and felt such a belonging to because of what he fundamentally was. Not just for becoming a Noah and endangering them—but for being an Exorcist who would cry for the sake of akuma and wish to save even their enemies.

If they knew.

Mouth dry, he blinks rapidly for a moment, again not for it having anything to do with his sight. Shakes it off almost immediately because that's too eerily close for a second, not something he ever expected to feel so closely related, and he presses his lips together for a moment as he considers that. If she felt she couldn't let anyone know about her abilities because she would be.. shunned? Considered dangerous?

Even if her power was something that seemed so generally... good?

What was he missing? ]

[ ... slowly—gently—he reaches out a bit unsteadily for her hand. At least, where he thinks it might be. So that he might cover it with his, even if he probably bumps her wrist lightly in the process before he realizes and readjusts.

(It's terrifying. Makes his chest clench to realize he can't even reach to take someone's hand in reassurance. But now isn't the time for that.)

He squeezes her hand gently instead when he does manage to find it. ]

..Just because it's the way something has always been, it doesn't mean it's right, or even still true. So even if that might have been how everyone would have reacted before... it doesn't mean that's how it has to be anymore.

I think people here would understand. [ Let's be honest, they're pretty understanding even of him and all his oddities. Almost weirdly so. ] And even if they don't...

..that's okay. [ He squeezes her hand again briefly, and for a second it's almost like he has to take a moment to reassure himself as well. ]

Even if the rest world doesn't understand, as long as the people close to you believe in you—then even if the rest of the world hates you, they're still your home and you can find belonging there. The people who accept you even when no one else will.. that's what makes a feeling of "belonging" special.

[ Allen Walker, the Exorcist who left his fellow Exorcists and because of those aspects of himself he knew they fundamentally would never accept and would only cause them continued grief. Despite how beloved they were to him. ]

Besides...

[ And he cocks his head to the side then, smiling suddenly so very gently—brightly and with such simple and forthright sincerity. Warm and warmed.

A veneer over a heightened sense of panic—he can't even see her expression to know her reaction—but a very good one. He has to. ]

I think it's pretty incredible what you can do.

[ A mother whose only reassurance was that it would be "discrete," and that Lux need not worry about how her sudden disappearance would reflect on the family. And a brother who she knew would, were he to find out the truth, would not hesitate to make sure that she was dealt with as any other mage who posed any sort of threat would be. These were the people who she considered close; dear family who would never accept that part of her.

That was home.

She had come to terms with that... until living here, and finding that the world didn't always have to be so painfully black and white. But even then, she didn't expect to find that kind of understanding and belonging that she wanted.

So it's when he speaks that she suddenly looks up, wondering if she might have heard him wrong. Because it's one thing to say that something like that didn't bother her, but Allen, saying it like that...

It's like saying that he accepts that part of her, something she still can't quite believe anyone would be willing to do. That he does it without any sort of hesitation, like there's no reason why he might question it. That's the most overwhelming part of all, as if he somehow understood what it's like for others to hate what is so much a part of who he was. And not only that—

But to believe that, even if the rest of the world may hate or spurn you, there will be someone who will accept you when no one else will, and to tell her that in such a quiet reassuring way, Allen that's... ]

...

[ He might not be able to see her reaction, but he'll be able to feel the way her fingers squeeze against his, soft porcelain contrasted between wine red. And she does have to take a breath, her head lowering again as she squeezes her eyes shut. She can't look at him right now; it's too much.

Saying it like that, it's like he's already accepted that part of her that so many others hated without ever knowing. And that's too much.

Is that what home really was? A place where, no matter what happened, she could be herself? That she would still be accepted despite that? Is that something she's allowed to have? She hasn't done anything to deserve anything like that, but...

Why does she get the feeling he might understand that fear and reluctance far better than anyone she's ever known? ]

—!

[ And it's at that moment that she's somewhat thankful that he can't see the look on her face as she suddenly looks up, floundering for something to say as she turns a somewhat unflattering shade of pink. He sounds so genuine about it too, Allen do you understand what you're saying?! Saying that something she sees as an extension of herself is incredible...

Something about hearing that makes her really happy...

He might feel a slight flicker of warmth from her, but it's very quickly contained. ]

I—no really, it's not that—

[ w h y ]

I've always been able to do this! At least as long as I can remember!

[ It's potentially a very good thing he missed a lot of that. Because he would have been uncertain if maybe he'd overstepped and said too much, that she would be moved so strongly. And for a moment he does when she squeezes his hand in return and says his name like that, but...

A bit of a lopsided smile slips out when she seems to suddenly stumble over the fact he... well, it's kind of of a compliment? He meant it more as a general statement, but... was that bad??

Lux... ]

Ah.. [ Did always having that.. have something to do with this?? ]

So have I, I was born like this. [ You know, that hand of his she's holding. Probably. Maybe. He's not entirely sure... why is this a big deal??? ]

Well I thought she was done but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[personal profile] rememberher 2017-12-28 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's not something she's used to! And saying that something she feels is an extension of herself is incredible—it's only natural to react that way, right?

But really she's only making a somewhat awkward situation even more so, and that thought forces her to take a breath. It's fine, he doesn't know any better.

Which is why she's thankful to have something else to focus on, although the way he phrases it does make her blink a few times. He was born like this? Did he mean... His arm? She assumed that, but the way he says it, there must be more. ]

You mean what you did back there?
