And I lived in London during β and after β the Luftwaffe bombed it to hell and back. Yes, comparatively, it hasn't been that bad. Particularly if you take wartime rationing into consideration. But it's a little too familiar for my tastes.
[ It's common enough knowledge that she's with the Royal Guard here but almost no one is aware of the extent of her combat experience. As far as appearances go, she simply walks a patrol route. She heaves a sigh. ]
It's only been a few years since the war for me. I can do without the reminder.

[ he spins her around once more, then pulling her in close. ]
Though, this tension, with both sides wanting to strike but not being able to... that really reminds me of home. We should just be thankful that neither side has any nuclear weapons this time. Though, the threat of "mutually assured destruction" was a hell of a way to keep a war from heating up.
[ still, deterrence caused more harm than good. if they ended up fighting it out, he'd have to play his cards carefully. ]
You think we can do anything about it, or will the pieces fall no matter what we do?

[ Which means that whatever happens is beyond them, even if they get involved in some capacity. There's a history she doesn't quite understand yet, although she's interested in learning more. ]
And something tells me both sides don't entirely agree with tonight's festivities, no matter how lovely it seems.

[ just a thought. ]
You mean, the thinly-veiled smiles, and the way that everyone wearing pins compete with one another just a little too much? You're a pretty perceptive woman.
[ it's not an accusation, not really. just an observation that he's made of her in the time that he's known her. but then again, it was almost too obvious for anyone to miss. ]

Plenty of people will willingly ignore what's right in front of their eyes to keep their illusions alive.
But, then again, I already knew you were a realist.

If you can't count on the English to be terribly pragmatic, then what else is there?
no subject
[ same as the englishman he'd known once. ]
Just the same as counting on Russians to be utterly miserable.
omg so sorry this vanished in my inbox
[ Well, she would. She lived next door to a Russian assassin. But she ought to be diplomatic here. ]
You seem to be having a rather nice time.
it's cool this happens to me all the time
[ though he can't help but laugh. she does bring up a good point. ]
What can I say? It's a lot nicer than I was used to back home. Have you ever been to a Soviet Gala?
[ not that he thinks she has. but still... he gives her a look that could be interpreted as "knowing", even if he really knows absolutely nothing. fake it until you make it, and all that. ]
no subject
No, I can't say that I have. I think the nicest thing I've ever attended before this was a garden party hosted by my mother β or maybe the dance hall on a Saturday night.
[ She raises her brows at him. ]
Have you?

[ a laugh. while Ocelot is a secretive person by nature, he does genuinely like Peggy.
truthfully, hadn't they been "dancing" around each other since the day they met? ]
Of course. I wouldn't be a very good patriot if I hadn't been, now would I?
