[ they must've been tagged as 'Team Find Stuff', because after the assumed success (or failure???) of gathering things for the rich person, it only seemed logical for him to go find her after learning about the details. crypts? traps? chances of treasure, both the mundane and the extraordinary? and of course, bringing something of value back? even though knowledge seems like it might be worth its weight in silver, there's no way Keaton's leaving empty handed.
especially when he knows his partner is... probably a little more capable than he is in most things. ]
I figured you might know more about traps than me.
[ he exclaims, as he stares at the crypt's entrance. it looks pretty spooky. and old. and dark.
[ Knowledgeable about traps she might be, but even moreso is the fact that spooky spirits are (ironically) right up her alley. The crypt itself, once they get there, looks appropriately dark and creepy, but not nearly enough to stop her from ducking through the entrance and making her way downwards and inwards. ]
I'm good at avoiding them, if that's what you mean.
[ Thank you, quick reflexes and also a whole deck of tricks up her sleeve. ]
Aren't your kind supposed to be good at that? What about those intruders that try and take your ears and tails and pelts?
Well... that's probably about the same thing, isn't it?
[ because one can learn from experience, so perhaps she'll be good in recognizing them afterward? still. spirits aren't exactly his cup of tea, and as she enters the crypt before he does, he swallows thickly before slowly following in. his tail, completely still. ]
Uh... no, no. We don't set up traps. We all live up on a mountain, so it's easy to see people coming from a distance.
[ with a sniff, both of his ears twitch. it's a familiar scent, of death and decay, but also of... something metallic. ]
Hey. I smell blood. I think.
[ but what makes him really concerned is that he can't see it. ]
[ So she's going to be carrying dead dog outta here, got it.
Just kidding, hopefully she won't be needing to carry dead anything out of here, save for maybe a dusty treasure or two. But the chances of doing a quick in-out seems to be diminishing by the minute, her spooky spirit senses tingling more and more the further into the crypt they go.
Keaton's mention of blood wipes any last traces of amusement off her face, and she's completely solemn by the time she turns to face him. ]
Can you tell where it's coming from?
[ --Oh yeah. ]
By the way, I wouldn't go that way [ with a point ] if I were you, unless you want to end up a pile of bones like the ones you love so much.
[ haha! no one's doing on THIS adventure! besides, his acute senses can't possibly fail him! ]
It's not in front of us. Or above us.
[ at least he can successfully deduce that there's no danger in either of those directions, and with Yoruichi providing that additional nugget of information, he's figured it out! somewhat triumphantly, he stomps his heel into the ground underneath him. ]
So it's probably below us!
[ but with all of that, he doesn't make the connection. the one that slowly dawns on him as his somewhat aggressive action has an odd sound emanating from below. something hollow. something thin. ]
There's a low rumble, enough to dislodge a few pebbles between the cracks of the paved floor beneath them and send them skittering. Not very far though, because it's about half a second later that the floor swings downward with a loud groan.
Trap #1: activated. ]
Watch out!
[ She barrels forward as fast as possible, yanking whichever of Keaton's body parts is closest to her - sorry if it's his neck - and dragging him with her before they both drop down into the gaping hole and become freshly charred shish kebabs.
Or whatever's down there, maybe it's a pit of starving snakes. Either way: NOT TODAY, SATAN. ]
[ perhaps it's a pit of smoldering and starving snake shish kebabs, complete with skulls and spikes as decoration? or a reminder that, well, most pits are going to be bad. is there such thing as a good one outside of a plastic ball one? probably not! still, Satan is probably a little disappointed that no one will be joining today. ]
Yeowch!
[ yeah, about that. his neck is definitely sore now, along with one unfortunate ear, but that's probably the least of his concerns. once Keaton is sure that he's safe and sound, he takes a peek into it from his hands and knees at the edge. ]
... wow. That's pretty deep. Guess exploring it is out of the question.
[ then stands up, turns around, and dusts off his pants. ]
You're strong. [ not a question, just a statement. a genuine compliment, even. ] I'm pretty lucky you've got cat-like reflexes!
[ Easy to be fast and strong when you're a veritable death god but she doesn't say as much aloud. It'd probably jinx something anyway, considering where they are - who wants to be in the company of an overseer of death in a dark and creepy crypt?
Instead, she peers over the edge with Keaton, careful to keep her balance. Nothing but dead air down there, stale and with an unpleasant scent. They could go down there, but it'd be a waste of time. ]
You could, but you'd lose an arm, Or maybe all of your body.
My entire body?! When you put it that way, that doesn't sound like it'd be worth the hassle.
[ not to mention, they'd probably have to forgo the entire rest of the crypt. there's probably more to see and do, like not fall into pits and die in front of a death god in an embarrassing manner. so, he'll have to save that for later. or never. ]
Smell? Hm. Let's see.
[ not that his nose looks that much different than a human's, but the blessing of somewhat enhanced senses isn't lost on him. sometimes, he just has to be reminded that he has them, and... ]
... I smell fresh air. I think it is, anyway. It's coming from...
[ and he points down one corridor. there are a few possibilities, but this particular one makes him narrow his eyes because it also begs the question of how it could be possible. ]
Fresh air in a crypt is nothing short of strange, but better fresh air than more blood or decomposing bodies. A passageway of some sort, most likely, which she'll take over a dead end full of traps. ]
Let's go then, but keep your guard up.
[ Does he know the meaning of those words.... ]
I'll go ahead in case we find more surprises. [ The non-fun kind. ] Keep watch for anything coming from behind.
[ wouldn't be hard for his ears to catch anything out of place, even in a crypt. it's been mostly silent anyway, sans the squeaking of the trap door opening up and the sound of air growing louder and louder as they continue down the path. ]
... you know, it's pretty dark in here. Kinda spooky.
[ by no means does he doubt Yoruichi's abilities. she's different compared to any other human he knows--- making him a little suspicious of whether she is in the first place, but. hey. why pry into things that don't need an immediately explanation. ]
The air is getting closer. The source of it, even. You feel it?
[ Not precisely, but dead bodies and the spirits that once possessed them elicit in her no fear or alarm. She's ferried spirits across the border between living and not, fought those that had dared step out of line. Surely any ones remaining in this crypt would be no different from those back home?
They'll find out sooner or later, with all signs pointing to sooner rather than later. ]
I can feel it. [ He might have fuzz for brains, but his senses at least are spot on. ] There's something else too...
[ It's only a couple more steps forward before a voice rings out, low and moaning: ]
[ for once, Keaton is legitimately surprised. not that he didn't doubt she could live in such an unusual place based on human standards or anything! no, if anything, this would probably be better for a Wolfskin like him. except without the dangerous traps, the spooky voice, or the chill that starts at the tip of his tail and goes right up his spine. ]
... but what if we keep going further?
[ more of a question to the ghost than Yoruichi, as he stops to try to hone in on the voice. no one he's heard before, and it sounds pretty serious. ]
You think I can punch a ghost here? I don't know if I can punch a ghost.
[ even with his Beaststone, he's not 100% sure. but this becomes less of an issue as he suddenly feels the imaginary, cold touch of death on his tail fur and he YELPS loudly, crashing into Yoruichi's back and clinging to her waist. ]
closed to Yoruichi

basically perfect for him, but. what about her? ]
