OPEN! let's go gem-hunting
Who: tiger boy (
gekkajuu) & anyone interested
What: gem-hunting fora creepy cultist Overseer Voss! (also a catch-all for other stuff, maybe)
When: this month
Where: all over like a bad rash
Warning(s): none, probably? soosh living the cinnamon roll life. will edit if necessary
Atsushi is enjoying his new job at the stables, but there's not always as much work as he'd like, and while he loves all the animals (well... most of them, anyway), he really misses traveling around to gather samples for the Institute, the way he used to. Nothing made him feel quite as connected with (and at home on) this planet, the way that had.
So when he hears about the Temples asking for crystal drops and other gems - and paying good money for them, too - he decides to go for it. Admittedly his first experience getting those crystal drops was a little -... Well, it was an experience, to say the least. But he'd succeeded - and that means he can do it again, right?
If he runs into any of his friends, either before he leaves or along the way, he'll be happy to continue the quest together and share the profits. And if people he doesn't know seem to be after the same thing? Well, Atsushi for one is happy to work together. The more, the merrier!
1. crystal drops
Enchanted waters sound very nice, but in Atsushi's experience, they're an inconvenience more than anything. Not that his experience gathering crystal drops was bad as such, but it's still left him with a bitter aftertaste. He literally hadn't known what he was getting into. But he's more prepared now, having brought a net of sorts. He can grab a branch to attach it to, and that will make everything far easier to handle! The less wet he gets, the better.
Admittedly, using a net on the rocky bottom of a stream or lagoon isn't the brightest idea he's ever had... but maybe he'll catch something else before he has to get into the (formerly?) enchanted water, after all. And if he transforms his eyes, maybe he can spot the crystal drops from the shore! ... At least: if he gets close enough to the water that the sparkling surface doesn't block his vision.
There's no way that could go wrong or anything.
((OOC: Pick your water effect, if any! Also: feel free to decide whether Atsushi's cub has come along to wreak minor havoc or not.))
2. Flona Cove
While this wasn't exactly a part of Overseer Voss' request, Atsushi remembers the stories of beautiful jewels being found in some of the lagoons here. At the time of the beach party, the weather had been great, and as a result, competition had been fierce enough that Atsushi simply hadn't bothered trying to make an extra buck. Yes, he appreciated earning money - but not at all cost.
Now, however, it's freezing, and nobody in their right mind would dive deep into the water for a few gems that may or may not be worth the effort. But that just makes Atsushi eager to try! Even if Overseer Voss isn't interested, someone else might be interested in some shinies.
Atsushi tries to be prepared, bringing some dry clothes, and making a small fire on the shore to warm himself on after the fact. Will it really be worth the effort? ... Well, if nothing else, he tried.
3. Edrathe Ruins
"There's definitely something there," he half-whispers at the opening of the cave. It's a feeling more than a true observation, but lots of animals would choose a cave to spend the winter at, and Atsushi has a bad feeling about this one.
Still, this is where those other gems are supposedly found, so he'll take his chances.
"Maybe it's hibernating..? If we're quiet, we might not wake it."
It's not a bad idea. At least: not until they find the gems, and those have to be cut free from the cave walls. Maybe Atsushi can be a distraction and lure the beast away, so his partner can focus on the jewels? Of course, there's no better way to test a new friendship than to see if people will just run away with the loot while Atsushi is fighting for his life.

The human Arts in my world are only allowed to eat vegetables. Helps to sweeten up their blood, you see.
[ All right, maaaaaaaaaybe not the best thing to mention while they were eating. Either way, the feast was laid out, and Reign was impressed by how simple the meals were, yet so meticulously done. ]
Wow, this is quite something. Thank you.
[ He removed one of his glove took a piece of the raw meat, giving it a bit of taste. Not bad. ]
Definitely tasted like beef, but who knows what it really is, especially when there are so many unknown creatures the meat could come from.

[Having given Daifuku a little more food, Atsushi finally took a sandwich for himself.]
That's right... I know quite a few species by now, but I usually go with looks more than names. Not that I don't get surprised from time to time.
no subject
Urm, you can say so. They're also like social arm-candies? Arts are taught various skills, specialising in some so as to bring pride to the vampire owner, usually those of noble status.
Not that I've ever had one.
[ Best not to elaborate more. Because while it seemed like giving humans an opportunity at a better life, Arts were more like glorified pets, their life at the whims of their patron. ]
Oh, oh! Have you tried anything exotic in this land? Something you've never eaten before?
[ Smoooooooooooth. Nice way to turn away from the subject about vampires and their human meals. ]

[There was genuine curiosity in Atsushi's expression, but he knew better than to press for details. Always sensitive to people's moods - a vital skill, when growing up in an abusive situation - Atsushi could tell that Reign didn't want to expand upon the topic too much. And since it was a little awkward to talk about such things, as a vampire to a human, Atsushi didn't think more of it than that.]
I've eaten all sorts of strange things! [HIS FAVORITE TOPIC!] The meat and fish is usually along the lines of what you'd expect, but the fruit in particular can be unusual - and some mushrooms, too.
... I wouldn't recommend eating either of those in the wild. Just to be safe.
[Not that Reign needed to eat such things anyway - but just in case.]
no subject
Anyway, it seemed Atsushi was pleased to talk about food, and Reign happily listened to him as he munched on his meat. ]
Mn, that's a given. There's no telling if it's poisonous at all. And even if it isn't, they might cause some sort of non-fatal side effects. Anything you don't like to it? Or actually found unappetising?
no subject
[One that he had definitely not acquired.]
But the side effects are the trickiest thing, I think.
I don't know if it's because of all the magic on this planet, but nature seems to go right along with it.

[ Reign took another piece of meat, though he made sure there were sufficient left for Daifuku. No point hoarding it all. Besides, he wasn't entirely hungry, unlike Atsushi who needed to replenish his energy. ]
Where else have you yet to search for the gems?
[ He asked, glancing around to spot any other bodies of water that Atsushi hadn't explore yet. ]
no subject
[He's industrious, but he's still only one person. But he's one person happily nomming away on sandwiches, so that's something.]
The place where I found a crystal drop before was more to the west, I think... I was thinking I'd look a little more to the south after this.
no subject
[ Which was something Reign never thought he would do, taking suggestion or directives from a human. But living in Nysa made him see that they were not all too different, despite being not of the same species. After all, there were other beings here as well. ]
We can start whenever you've rested, though we should at least wrap up before the sun sets. Who knows what creatures would come out after dark.
no subject
[Since Reign was going to be the next to hit the water, that was easy enough - and Daifuku was done with his food, too. Holding a sandwich between his teeth, Atsushi packed up his things so they could move along.]
no subject
[ Reign helped Atsushi to pack, then began walking towards the south where Atsushi had indicated earlier. It didn't take long before they came across another body of water, this time a small lagoon with crystal clear water.
He began to strip, first his jacket, then vest and shirt, followed by trousers and underwear. Like Atsushi earlier, Reign disrobed until he was naked as well, though his skin was free of blemishes. Compared to Atsushi's thin frame, Reign's was slightly more well-toned, but not too muscular. ]
I'll search this one, and you can try to see if you're able to spot any from the shore.
[ Hopefully this way Atsushi would be able to catch sight of any crystals that may have been in Reign's blind spot while underwater. Once he folded his clothes, Reign passed them to Atsushi, giving his friend a grin before diving into the lagoon. ]
no subject
All right!
[Accepting the clothes, Atsushi made sure to grab some cloth from his bag and put it on the ground before putting the pile of clothes on it. That should keep them clean and safe enough while Atsushi went to help Reign's search! ... though not entirely safe from Daifuku, who, when the two were busy, decided to take a nap on the pile of clothes. At least the cub didn't ruin them; at worst, it might have gotten them a little dirty.
The lower sun meant less reflection of light on the surface of the water, but what reflection there was, was a lot brighter. Transforming his eyes, Atsushi peered into the water. There were indeed some sparkles to be seen, but whether they were just on the surface or something deeper was hard to determine, even with increased vision.]
Try a little further to your right?

What Atsushi said earlier about the view underwater was true. The sight was spectacular, something which Reign rarely saw. It wasn't often that he swam in the water, after all. If they weren't searching for gems and short on time, he would have enjoyed exploring the lagoon marine life. Thus far, he had yet to feel anything strange happening to him as well, so either this lagoon had been/was enchanted, or it wasn't at all.
But Reign did notice a rise in his body temperature when he came up for air, waving at Atsushi to let him know he heard him. ]
All right. That said, my body feels extremely warm even in the cool water, so it may be a kind of enchantment. Let's hope we find something.
[ He dove back into the water, heading in the direction Atsushi had indicated. Lo and behold, as he swam towards a bed of rocks, Reign finally caught sight of something reflective. It was best he retrieve the crystal as soon as possible, because he didn't know how long he could withstand the rising body heat. After all, vampires preferred cooler temperatures. ]
I found one!
[ Reign crowed happily as he broke through the water surface, the gem held high in his hand and a wide grin on his face. He paddled to the shore, passing it to Atsushi as carefully as he could. That done, Reign returned to trying to find more of those crystals, but even with Atsushi's excellent eyesight, all they could find were a few of lacklustre quality.
In the end, the sun had set, and it was too dark to find anything. But those were still quite a haul. Reign dried himself and got dressed, then accompanied Atsushi to hand the crystal to Overseer Voss, with Daifuku happily trotting beside them. ]
