What: A catch-all for January.
When: Throughout the month.
Where: Mostly Wyver.
Warning(s): None so far?
1 ) That's Not a Horse
[ Gamora does not have experience with dragons. There were none on her planet, and even less in space, but in Wyver, that isn’t the case.
She’s also discovered that traveling can be a pain, and with the availability of mounts (which she hasn’t acquired for herself yet), she’s drawn to the wyverns she’s regularly seen. She’d prefer something that wasn’t, you know, alive, but given the options, she’s willing to take one for a test-drive, to see what she thinks.
The reins are handed off to her, and she leads a beautiful red wyvern towards the city gates. She runs a palm down the beast’s broad neck, feeling its scales with appreciation, and when it turns its head to meet her eyes, she stares right back into the reptilian slits.
A quiet hiss, and Gamora reaches out to set her hand on its snout. It doesn’t snap at her, and instead, slowly blinks in quiet acceptance.
She’s just about to climb aboard, because she’s going on an adventure.
Come along for a ride? ]
2 ) Stay The Night
[ It’s nearly nightfall out in the Undergrowth, and Gamora’s wyvern is getting fidgety. She remembers what she was told about sending the beast home if she wouldn’t return before sundown, so she pulls the reins taut to stop the mount, glancing over her shoulder at her companion. ]
We should find somewhere to stay out here. He needs to return to the city, and he won’t be willing to take us with him in a few minutes.
[ The wyvern hisses and shakes out its head, tugging against its bridle. ]
… The sooner we get off, the better.
3 ) Disturbing The Dead ( A )
[ Gamora has adjusted to making a living since joining the Guardians. Earning units where they could was normal, which is why picking up odd jobs for silver doesn’t bother her.
So here she is, wandering through this damned crypt with anyone unlucky enough to join her.
She has an excellent sense of her surroundings. She can usually detect traps with little trouble, but when ghosts come into the mix, it’s hard to focus on possible trip wires that will dump her and whoever’s joined her into a dark, unwelcoming pit.
An unholy howl fills the crypt’s passage, and as Gamora whirls around to search for the source, her ankle catches on—
Oh, damn it.
The ground drops out beneath her, and there’s going to be a lot of tumbling down to land in a tangle of limbs in the dark.
Gamora gives a short grunt of annoyance as she lands directly on top of someone.
Oops. ]
4 ) Disturbing the Dead ( B )
[ This has been a long, miserable haul through the dark, and Gamora is in no mood for shenanigans.
At the end of the maze is a stockpile of dusty odds and ends that look like they might be valuable.
Crouching down by the heirlooms, Gamora lifts one up to give it a once-over. ]
This had better be what they want.

It would be different if it was one day, Peter.
[ But it's not. It hasn't been since they woke up, and maybe he hides it better, maybe it's less obvious, but it's still there. ]
It's relevant because you have had other things on your mind.
no subject
Okay, but my point still stands. A bad guy isn't gonna back off just 'cause I'm in a sour mood.
no subject
But as you said, he's still in that pod. What difference would it make between knowing now and months ago?
no subject
no subject
[ Which it just did. ]
no subject
[ And he sounds almost incredulous, almost affronted.
But what's done is done, and even while it's in his usual mode of operation to keep harping on this, it's just going to become a bigger argument than they need right now, and it'll get them nowhere. So in a surprising show of restraint, he scrubs at his face, taking a deep breath and counting to ten.
A little more calmly, ]
We should at least let Mantis in on this, too. I mean, if she's gonna be hanging around us more, she should probably know to keep an eye out for this asshole.
no subject
The briefest hesitation, and then: ]
Mantis knows.
[ At least as much as she probably needs to, for the time being. ]
no subject
[ And he says it flatly, too incredulous to be angry – for now, anyway. ]
You're telling me I'm the only one who didn't know. And at no point did any of the three of you think, "Hey, maybe we should tell Quill about this."
no subject
(Because this isn't the only thing they haven't told Peter.) ]
It wasn't out of a conscious effort to keep it from you. She was upset, and she felt guilt for things she'd done while she served Ego. I was trying to reassure her, and she asked if Thanos was in stasis. I told her that he was.
That's all, Peter.
no subject
I can't believe you told Mantis before you told me.
[ And somehow, this is an even greater offense than Gamora not saying anything at all. Admittedly things have been— weird between the two of them, with the argument about the state of— them still hanging like a shadow, with all the shit that's happened, but he still figured Gamora would come to him with anything. Everything, really, if it was bothering her enough, and— ]
Mantis.
[ With no offense to Mantis, but— still. ]
no subject
[ And then when Peter did wake... ]
I had time to deal with finding Thanos, and there wasn't... an opportunity to discuss it after you were out of stasis.
[ Because she tried to talk about something serious with Peter then, and it had blown up in her face.
Maybe there had been a part of her concerned that Peter would have brushed aside her fears about what it meant that Thanos was present at all – or maybe he wouldn't have wanted to hear it at all.
Either way, she'd been avoiding the more sensitive topics since. ]
no subject
We could've been having lunch, and that would've been a good enough time.
[ He scrubs his face again, voicing his aggravated sigh. ]
Seriously. Mantis?
[ Sorry, Mantis, wherever you are. ]
no subject
Not that Gamora is ever going to admit to the fact that Peter has – both on Ego's planet and on the station. ]
It is not something to casually mention.
no subject
[ He doesn't quite snap it back but it's a close thing. ]
Like— if I found out Ego was here, I would've told you the instant I knew.
[ ... after he had tried to destroy the bastard's pod or avatar or whatever the fuck.
Purely as a hypothetical situation, of course. ]
no subject
Silence stretches between them in the clearing, because at first, Gamora doesn't know what to say. ]
Peter...
[ The thing is that Gamora hasn't actively been trying to keep Ego's existence from him. She's neglected to tell him – as have the others, apparently – but... well, maybe it was because she didn't want him to know. Not yet. Not when everything, even months removed, was fresh enough to get him snapping and defensive and uneasy.
As accomplished as he may be at hiding it sometimes, she knows the layers of hurt and betrayal are still there for Peter. The disaster of his father and what had happened on the planet were monumental, and— she knows Peter, she knows he'd rather avoid it than deal with it, and shoving it into a dark, tiny box doesn't let it heal.
So maybe it's just felt like Peter isn't ready to know – but she isn't going to lie to him, either. ]
no subject
He's hoping that means he's made his point. And he's hoping this is leading up to an apology or something. Or at least the general shape of one, and he huffs out a sharp sigh. ]
It's fine.
[ Dully, because apologies aren't really Gamora's thing, and waiting for one might actually leave him old and wrinkled before she can manage to spit it out. ]
I guess I know now, which is— fine. Not ideal, but— [ A small, aggravated noise. ] —whatever.
[ He rubs at his eyes, pinches the bridge of his nose, counting to ten again to swallow down his irritation. When he looks up again, though, he still looks affronted. ]
Seriously, though. Mantis.
[ —yeah. He's still stuck on this. ]
no subject
He knows now, he says. He knows about Thanos, but what about his father? Would it do more harm than good to tell him about Ego, up there on the station? Or would he be resentful that it's been kept from him, that they didn't tell him immediately or at least sooner?
She hates this. ]
Why would you have wanted to know sooner? Just to be prepared?
[ She needs to understand that more to make her decision, she thinks. Or to at least feel more validated in keeping the knowledge of Ego from him. ]
no subject
Uh, gee, I dunno. Wouldn't you wanna know if there was a possibility that a dude they call the Mad Titan might end up wandering around the planet?
no subject
That was why I made Rocket tell me.
[ Because he'd been cagey about it, too, dodging her questions when she'd needed to know the truth. She'd needed to know if Thanos could wake at any time, if the Natha had been foolish enough to scoop him up into a pod, and, well... unfortunately, he's not the only one they have to worry about potentially wandering the planet. ]
no subject
[ That feels a little validating, at least, and some of his annoyance ebbs. She's getting why he was (is) pissed, it seems, and he blows out another breath between his lips, running a hand back through his hair. ]
I mean— I know right now, there's nothing we can do about Thanos, but like— just—
You seriously thought I wouldn't wanna know about this? About a thing that's been at the back of your head for months?
[ ... hypocrisy, thy name is Peter Jason Quill. ]
no subject
It's the kind of look that says, "I want you to think about what you just said to me."
What is the mess with Ego if not the thing that's been at the back of Peter's mind since they woke up? What is it if not a monumentally heavy weight that Gamora wants to know about? ]
Then shouldn't that be mutual?
no subject
But his mouth snaps shut, once he realizes what she's implying and what she's referring to, and something anxious and desperate (and afraid) flails in him, trying to keep those dark, unruly thoughts and memories caged in. ]
... That's different.
[ Stubbornly, mulishly. ]
There's nothing to talk about.
no subject
[ To her, Thanos is still that dark cloud that leaves a mess of tangled, swirling fear in her chest, that leaves her feeling helpless and... weak. Gamora is far from weak, but if ever something reduced her to irrationally believing it to be true—
That would be her adopted father. ]
no subject
[ And it’s clear from his tone that he really doesn’t understand why they’re even having this discussion. Like, the shit with Ego was... shit. But the shit with Thanos? That’s, like, a thousand times worse than any crap Peter’s dealt with.
It helps, too, that Ego is dead. Gone. Taken out with the Storm, and even if Peter wishes he could’ve exacted his own revenged, wishes he could have been there to see the bastard die, Peter at least takes comfort in the fact that Ego is gone forever. ]
Like, we’re talking about potentially dealing with an actual, literal, evil super villain, here, so there’s definitely a lot that needs discussing.
no subject
Another short exhale of frustration, because even if Gamora might be trying to encourage Peter to talk about his baggage, that doesn't make her any better about discussing her own. ]
Like what? You know he is there now.
