( a bitter thought. she remembers too keenly some of the last conversations they had. how Steve feared for how much time they might have. she didn't understand it then. she more than understands it now.

still, she can't help but hesitate. the world had changed without Steve in it, and she had changed as well. in so many ways the girl she'd been when she'd met him had died along with him. she wondered what he would think of her now; compared to the bright beacon she had been once, it is hard to feel more than a disappointment. )
