As awesome and adventurous as Nysa has proven to be so far.. even someone like Duo could feel a little lonely from time to time. Yes, Mika and a Tekkadan crew did a damn good job of making him feel like someone out there might just understand, but there was no way he was going to saddle them with all the goings on of his own war. They shared the common shackles of having gone through struggle, both to live and to simply thrive, and there was no revoking that. Even if they'd only shared shreds of their experience in life, it was more than he'd managed to share with most people around here. Even if he was sure as untouched snow that absolutely no one here could know him and his past, there's no revoking a former gundam pilot's paranoia about being recognized, being known, all those consequences...
He's just plain unwilling to accept all of those, and so he keeps to himself, mostly. Social enough, but not nearly as social and sharing as he could be.
However, when Mipha mentions once, in passing, probably thru text message, that another person she'd known from home had left... a little plan sprouts in that only at times brilliant mind.
- - So Duo proposes a camp out. It might do them both well to just get out of their respective cities for a little while and simply enjoy the woods and everything that went along with it. He'd even offered to take on packing their foods and drinks, which happens to include a little bit of bubbly because he thinks Mipha could use more of that, honestly.
Relaxation, time for herself instead of serving other people. All the things that Duo, really, never found himself doing.
They've hiked in to where they'd decided to call it, and Duo has finally decided the tent is secured enough when he pokes his head out of the front -
"Any luck with the fire Mipha? Isn't like we'll freeze to death but these damn bugs, man.."
A true space boy who hates bugs. What a good camping partner.

Suddenly she really wishes Urbosa was here. Call down a little lightning, set a little fire... If anyone could do it with precision and not set the entire rest of the woods on fire, it'd be her.
Mipha's so busy concentrating that Duo's voice catches her off-guard immediately. She fumbles with her tools, drops them, stares a moment at what seems to be a good metaphor for her life recently, then sighs and picks them up again. A weak smile is thrown Duo's way.
"Almost. Sorry, I'm not sure where my head is." Well, she does know, but whatever. She takes a breath and actually concentrates now, able to get some sparks going. A little flame begins to grow from it and Mipha sits back with a pleased look. "If we keep feeding it, it should stay for a while. Perhaps you won't completely become a bug buffet." She can't help teasing him.
no subject
"It's alright.. this tent's being a pain anyways..." He shrugs, tugging on one of the ropes attached to the support polls to make sure it was good and snug to keep it up right for when and if they actually used it. Who knew when it might rain out here, after all. Mipha may prefer it, but Duo was still learning how to deal with unpredictable weather patterns - again, space kid problems. It hadn't really occurred to him to think that maybe she might not be the best with fire, honestly. In many ways, Duo doesn't even really think of Mipha as anything other than another person - not a princess, not a Zora, not as an alien.
Sometimes that ability is good, and other times... maybe slightly problematic, like right now.
Duo squats down next to her burgeoning fire after he's sure his braid is behind him, gently wafting air toward it, feeding the flames oxygen to bolster them.
"If I have anything to say about it I'm not gonna, that's for sure." There's one of those bright grins as the flames take, beginning to put off a little less smoke as it burned hotter, and Duo moves to carefully tent some sticks around it to get it going. Slowly, but surely. Better to give it time than to smother it with too much tinder.
"If you're hungry I brought snacks."
no subject
She rests her arms on her legs, watching the flame grow. "Oh-- No, I'm alright." She looks to the tent and then the fire, and then lastly at Duo, tilting her head curiously.
"Have you done this sort of thing before? Camping, I mean." She smiles, as if enjoying something of a private joke as she continues. "I used to quite a bit, but I'm afraid I'm a little out of practice."
no subject
He nods as she says she's fine, happy enough if she's content. He'll probably grab a snack shortly, as always a bit of a bottomless pit when it came to food, just a little more so with the hiking in and all. The question about camping makes him laugh a little, hands putting palms to the sky and giving that kind of wiggle back and forth that says 'sort of' as he makes sure everything for the fire is in good shape for the moment. It's a bit of a story, how Duo came to be skilled at many things, but -
"Sleeping rough isn't anything new for me." No tent, no nothing when it came to how he'd slept as a child in their little gang. Just whatever building or bench they could find for that night, or that next few sleeping hours. "Sorta been doing it since I could remember, to be honest. Much more interesting to do when you're looking out at real stars, though."
Open sleeping on Earth had been a totally different animal, from the weather to the views, one of which annoyed the hell out of him and the other wasn't too bad. "I've gotten out of the habit, lately, but I guess it never really leaves you."
no subject
She turns her head to peek up through the trees at the stars she can see through the branches. "It is quite beautiful. I've sort of missed sleeping out in the open, truthfully. We sleep in large pools together normally, and it's a rather open area under the throne. You can't really see up, but you can see out." She smiles a little in nostalgia. "There's not much like it here--And sleeping in a bathtub isn't quite the same at all."
It's a joke...maybe. A little. She had slept in the bath a couple of times but it's not as comfortable. "It's a little disorienting that the stars are so different from what I knew, though..."
no subject
"You all sleep under the King's throne?" That seems a little... odd to him, but hell if he knows the culture where she's from. Of course sleeping out in the open wouldn't be too bad for them, rain jut added to the pools and they were... fish.. anyways. He supposed snow might be a problem, but she's never talked about it and he isn't about to be the dumb ass that looks Mipha in the face and asks her if her people freeze when it snows. He may have a bit of an uncouth kid, but he's not dumb enough to spit out questions like that totally sober.
"That sounds really nice, though. I'd turn in to a prune but .." He makes a little bit of a 'so what' motion with his hands. The more he hears about Mipha's home the more curious he is about it. "I'd love to see it, if I could."
"- - wait.. do you have to sleep in water?" Because he hadn't really... provided for that. Doesn't even know if there's any pools nearby and that's a little bit stressful. He doesn't want her to dry up over night or something equally stressful and Spongebob like.
"Yeah. It's weird for me too. Probably because I'd like.. been out amongst those stars, too, at certain points."
no subject
Just a little.
His question makes her quickly shakes her head. "Oh, no, I'll be alright. I can go for a while without needing to be in water, and thankfully this place isn't nearly as dry as, say, a desert. So I can withstand it for quite some time. I mad sure to bathe before we went on this trip so it won't be a problem." Mipha's smile turns gentle and fond though. "But thank you for worrying. I think you're actually the first person to question about that."
Being out among the stars does remind her of a question of her own though, and she tilts her head curiously. "How did you get out there, if I can ask? It didn't seem like traveling among the stars was just an idle hobby."
no subject
There's palpable relief on Duo's face as she says she'll be fine, adjusting how his long hair sits on his shoulder as he leans over the fire again to poke at a log or two. He's never caught his hair on fire and doesn't really plan to start now. "Well I mean, this place is pretty tropical so we might even have rain tonight but I didn't even.. think about it until just now and didn't want you to like.. get ill or anything." Carrying her back to town to dunk her in a pool might look a little suspicious, after all, and he'd feel bad if he hadn't scouted a place out that served all of their needs because he'd glazed over Mipha's different needs.
"Oh, I was born in space. On a colony, but, you know, in space." He shrugs. There's not much else other than that to make note of. "Then I snuck on to a shuttle off of my colony. Got caught, but it was worth it in the end I think."
no subject
The sound of the fire is comforting, as are the sound of the woods around them. The sounds are just different enough to be strange, but still somehow familiar enough to be comforting to Mipha. She sits back, leaning back on on hand as she watches the flames dance. "You're very sweet, Duo. But I won't let anyone know, of course. I'm sure you have a reputation to uphold." She's teasing him though, head tilting curiously.
Had Duo ever mentioned exactly what he did back before the Storm? She has a feeling he might've in passing mentioned it, but she can't quite remember. "What happened? When you got caught, I mean."
no subject
He smiles wryly as she laughs behind her hand, seemingly not too bothered by her laughter. He likes to hear that more than anything else - people laughing, happy. Smiles had been the entire reason he'd gone to war with Earth and the Alliance and anyone else who got in his way in the first place. Restoring the smiling faces of L2 that he'd used to see before the war had been the most important to him.
Odd noises still make Duo bristle a little, stopping every once in a while to stare intently where he'd heard movement moments before. Despite the fact that he'd been out of war for a little while, he still somewhat lacked the ability to stand down. A blessing and a curse all at once, really. "Less of a reputation around here than at home, really." He shrugs, not minding it. Not having to watch his own back too closely here is kind of.. freeing.
"I uh... I got my mobile suit, went to Earth. Fought in a war." That's a very succinct way to say it, and he's unsure how she'll react, considering he's so young, but, anyway..
"Much more eventful than living at the orphanage, really."
no subject
It definitely makes her heart ache, for him and for them. She has been considering considerably young by her peoples' standards too, granted, but still. "Seems we can never escape war, no matter where we may go." She falls quiet a moment, watching the flames dance. "I'm sorry you had to fight in it so young. It's not an easy thing. It can feel like the entire weight of the world is on the shoulders of you and your weapons."
At least, in her experience.
no subject
Duo and that ever usable baby face make gauging age difficult. In mind, he's definitely older than his years, but in body... well, he's still small and sprightly in body, and young in the face.
Still, he seems to sense the change in her mood, shrugging his shoulders and allowing that easy grin to spread over his face. He's come to accept that this was just his life, and wallowing in it wasn't going to get him anywhere but either jail, the loonybin, or both. "Eh, but here's the thing - " He points to everything around them with a sweeping motion. "- We're not at war right this moment, so we're escaping in a way. On an alien planet and all that but we're not fighting, right?"
And, of course, not one to linger on dark subjects, he decides that maybe now is the time to reveal his trump card. "I'm not lingering on it. What good is living in the past? Especially when I've got - "
Duo rustles around in his bag for a moment, making a small 'aha!' as he pulls a bottle out of it.. which happens to be the champagne they'd tasted at the party. "- One of these!"
no subject
Mipha sits up a little ore with interest as Duo continues, eyes going wide in amused delight as he pulls out the bottle. She definitely recognizes it, which makes her laugh. "Did you steal that from the party?"
no subject
"Exactly. So until it becomes a real thing, we're gonna acknowledge it, but not necessarily worry about it, yeah?" Ignoring things going on was just as unproductive as worrying about things that weren't yet occurring, so far as he's concerned, so he's not going to advocate it. Taking it easy for a few moments to just let themselves live a little? Totally going to advocate for it. Especially if they're about to be engaging in an alien war one way or another.
There's a little bit of a ~mysterious~ shrug of his shoulders as she asks if he stole it. The answer is definitely yes, but he dances around that.
"I acquired it from the party, yeah. I even remembered to bring cups." Which he promptly pulls from the bag.
"We can start on this whenever you want."
no subject
She laughs a little, reaching out to take one of the cups. "I should be the responsible one here and scold you for stealing, or something, but..." Mipha shakes her head. "I suppose I can let it go this time, provided you pour me some." No time like the present to start, right?
no subject
"There's no supposin' about it, Mipha." It's equal parts a tease and a sort of reprimand in a way, laughing as he works the bottle open. he should've probably known she'd want some right away by how much she'd liked the drink at the gala. It's easy enough to get open with a little finagling, and soon Duo is pouring some in to her glass.
"Listen, those guys can afford to 'lose' a bottle of this stuff. They've got more money than sense I'd bet." Plus he's a street kid who's stolen from people better off than him his entire life, so there's no way he's going to stop now. At least with the stealing from people with more money than sense part. He's not crooked enough to steal from his friends.
"Besides, is it to bad to redistribute a little wealth every so often?"
no subject
You'd think she would've learned her lesson the first time. She looks down at her cup with a slightly bitter smile and takes another sip. "I think this is how alcoholism starts... It's probably a good thing this is harder to get in Olympia." Which was where she preferred to stay these days.
Still, she tilts her head curiously at him. "That's rather altruistic of you," she says, though her tone is slightly teasing with it. "I believe there's a human story I was told about once, about some figure that did something like that. Steal from the rich, give to the poor?"
no subject
Hope springs eternal and all that good shit.. Duo's not going to be one to judge her for not wanting to think about whether someone would disappear again soon. That seems a little morbid even for the God of Death. Of course he could wax poetic over his short time spent with Heero before he'd been put back on ice, but he tries not to think about that. Maybe it's the fact that they never really spent a whole lot of time together that makes it a little easier to deal with as a whole.
Still, she startles a laugh out of him as she debates her beginnings of alcoholism, pursing his lips for a moment. "Nah, the beginning of alcoholism is when you spend your nights drinking with a bunch of dudes in a tin can in space for a span of time." He's done it before, Mipha, just let him tell you.
"What, do I seem like an 'all for me' type of guy to you?" He's always curious about these things, of course, because he's well aware he presents himself differently to different people.
"You mean Robin Hood? I'm not quite him, but I guess that's kinda close."
no subject
Mipha smiles and shakes her head with a thoughtful little hum. "No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it seem like I think you selfish. I suppose it's more... You don't seem the type to help those who could help themselves. That is... Well, let's say there's someone who's in debt. They're perfectly healthy in mind and body, but instead of working, they ask to borrow the money from you. I don't see you getting them the money, but I can see you pointing them in the direction of a job to earn it themselves, or something like that." A pause and she adds. "Or taking care of the people he's in debt to some other way, I suppose, if you were close enough to them..." Maybe not, you know, MURDER, but scaring them off or something.
She tilts her head and looks to him. "Does that make sense?"
no subject
"Nah. I don't confess to nothin'." Even when it gets the shit kicked out of him. That's been proven time and time again out in space, but Duo's not the type to tell Mipha all of these details just because. She'll probably find his life more depressing than originally expected and the last thing he wants is for Mipha to start pitying him or something to that effect. Still, he sips what he's got in his glass as she tells him what she meant, nodding his agreement.
Mentally, he's amazed that she's been able to gauge him so easily, but tries not to let that show too much. She's hit the nail on the head, after all, even if he doesn't want to admit it at all.
"Well you're not off on that one." He smiles, impressed despite himself. "But that's just kinda the... climate I grew up in, at home. You take care of yourself and if someone can't take care of themselves you help them. Or if they can but they aren't.. kick their ass in the right direction.." He laughs lightly at that, even if it's true.
"Life wasn't easy back home but we tried."
no subject
"It might be a little hard to imagine, but it was similar for my home. Not being easy, I mean. Things got very bad very quickly, and in the end it just became about...coping, rather than fixing."
no subject
"No, not really." He shrugs. There's a little laugh there, thinking to every person he's ever given a kick in the ass to in order to get them moving. It had been a necessity then, just like it was now from time to time, to give everyone a little bit of a kick to keep moving. Even Duo wasn't immune to it, really. The others had had to give him a kick to keep moving from time to time during the war when things had gotten rough.
"Yeah. Coping was about all that L2 had. There was no coming back from ll the bad political decisions that had been made for us, by then. Annoying, but true." He shrugs, clearly removed from it all. He'd gotten it back in blood payment a couple times over by then.
"But the only thing you can really do is take care to push on."
no subject
She wants to know more, but it sees obvious that Duo's a little reluctant to talk about it. Mipha can't tell if it's because he, personally, doesn't want to discuss it, or because he doesn't think this is the appropriate time for it, since the original intention seemed to be to cheer her--them both?--up. Or maybe it's a mix of both.
"Duo... Would you tell me more? About the war, or your life before it? If it's not too...difficult to talk about, I mean. If we're going to be friends, I'd like to get to know you more." Might as well be straight-forward with it.
no subject
She holds out her glass and Duo is fast to comply with the refill, as if hoping that maybe with her drink full she'll list in to different subjects or something. He'd brought her out here to cheer her up, after all, not listen to his stories about being by himself before the war and... being a child soldier, essentially, during it. She might not really grasp that, though - he realizes this because she's not yet mentioned how young he is or anything like that. Maybe she just isn't sure.
Once they're both refilled he sets the bottle aside again, careful not to spill it.
"Wasn't the point of coming out here not to talk about sad things?" He teases her for a moment, knees tented and his arms perched on top. "There's not a lot to talk about when it comes to the war anyways.. it didn't any good for either side."
no subject
The war and everything seems to be as much a part of him as anything else, and clearly it's what's shaped him the most. She doubts she could learn more about him without learning more about it too, so she doesn't quite see the point in trying to avoid it.
"I suppose I simply don't want you to feel like you have to avoid mentioning it or talking about it out of concern for upsetting me. I promise I can handle it." Mipha laughs a little and drinks some more. "If it helps, I may not even remember anything you tell me by the morning if I keep going at this rate." But she's joking...mostly.
no subject
"I mean all we've got is time, here." Which is kind of sort of true. They have time until they go back to being on ice or something like that, considering it isn't like they can go home if the Natha can be believed. It's a harsh truth, even more harsh if you linger on it too long. He tries not to think about it too much or too often. The idea that everything he fought for could just be gone, just like that...
He takes a long drink of their shared alcohol.
"Then maybe we'll keep drinking." He laughs lightly, taking another sip. "But, really, I promise you there isn't very much to share. Not a lot goes on when you're a street kid. It's all survival and that's it."
no subject
She drinks thoughtfully, blinking way the fuzziness to concentrate on the conversation. "Although, our communities are also much smaller, so perhaps that's only why it could work that way."
no subject
"Okay.. so an orphan, basically." He'd never known any kind of parent until nearly eight years old, found in a nun and a priest that he'd been brought to in order to try and reform him. Of course no one warned them what they were up against, but thankfully they'd been incredible and patient with him and his ways. Even patient about his hair, in the case of Father Maxwell or... just picking their battles. "That.. kinda thing kinda existed on L2 but usually it was for kids who'd like.. known their parents? And their parents friends took over when they went away for work or.. died. Whatever happened, you know."
In Duo and his gang's case, though, they'd been alone and taking care of each other since they could remember. Duo fidgets with his braid, a kind of nervous habit, adjusting how it sits over his shoulder.
"Probably. I just... know it was me and Solo and the other kids from the beginning." He shrugs. "We took care of each other."
no subject
Solo and Duo. Mipha smiles a little to herself and looks into her cup at the alcohol swirling around in it. "I believe you mentioned a church before. Is that where you and the others stayed?"
no subject
"No, I guess not." If he had, they hadn't really wanted to help him and had just let him run off. Not very good friends, if you ask him. He shakes his head 'no' as she asks about the church and the other children. He supposes it's an obvious enough question to ask given what she knows already, honestly -
"Nah. I went there after they caught me stealing bread. Me and the others lived where ever people weren't running us out.. open air or abandoned buildings.. whatever worked for a sleeping place."
no subject
no subject
Mipha wanted to know!!! This is what happens with a little liquid courage and wanting to know all about your weird new human friend with long hair, Mipha. He sighs at the continued questions, lips pursing a little as he turns away, checking their perimeter for anything or anyone that wasn't supposed to be there. In some ways he still hasn't left his own war behind, at least not in his habits.
"No I got caught by other people in the market place. They gave me to the Maxwell Church to try and straighten me up." How much it worked, though.. probably suspect. He's still got shitty manners and is a general terror to deal with who tends to talk with food in his mouth. "I was there for two years.. off an on.."
He pauses, but seems to decide screw it since she already knows so much. "I got adopted a few times but I didn't.. want to be. So I made sure I got back to the church one way or another."
no subject
Which reminded her-- "Your last name. You took it from the church?" She can't help but smile a little. "It sounds like you really liked it there, despite everything." A pause, a moment of hesitation and she continues softly. "...I suppose I don't need to ask to know it didn't last very long."
no subject
“yeah .. thought it was only right, really.” Liked it was the least of it, but he’s not fuzzy enough to begin getting in to the details of the Sister and Father and why he’d liked it there so much. He’d been so young and naive then, thinking that he could live there forever and there wouldn’t be any problems, that he could have this unconventional family and move along with life like he hasn’t been brought there in bad circumstances. Mipha presses on to say that she knew it didn’t last very long and Duo decides then to shotgun the rest of his glass -
Now there’s a huge rough spot.
“Yeah. It - The church was destroyed by a military group ...” does he have to say that they died? Does it make a difference at this point?
“So I had to make my own way again.”
no subject
"I see," is as she says, mulling it over in her mind. She doesn't think Duo would appreciate outright shows of pity or sympathy, so Mipha saves her sympathetic look for the inside of her cup. "Thank you for telling me. I'm sure it's hard, and... You don't have to tell me more if you wouldn't like to."
She goes quiet a moment, thinking, before she offers, "shall I tell you something about myself too, to make it even?"
no subject
"I think it'd be good if we could hear from you a little in this deal, yeah." Plus it gave him some time to gather himself up from having to sort of relive all of that mess from before. It's never easy, even if he knows living in the past doesn't do a whole lot for anyone or anything. Other than, of course, pouring himself a new glass because that entire bottle might have his name on it soon. If this talk keep up at least.
"So yeah.. I guess whatever you wanna tell me about?"
no subject
(It also makes her think of Link again and how he's back up in stasis, making her just feel depressed again. She drinks some more.)
"...We had a war too, of sorts." She begins, speaking slowly as she figures out how to explain it. "There was a great evil threatening to rise and put the entire world at risk. My friends and I were chosen as the Champions of our people to help fight against it, but in the end... In the end, we failed. It has grown too quick and too smart while we hadn't been paying attention, an we paid for it dearly."
Mipha takes another deep drink, finishing off her cup again. "...I was killed. My spirit trapped in my Divine Beast-- A sort of... What was it called? A 'mecha,' I suppose? Either way, I was stuck inside of it for a hundred years. Just... watching as this evil grew and destroyed so much in its path..."
no subject
In a way it's a familiar story - being a chosen few meant to save the planet. There had been five of them, though when he'd started this mission he'd thought that he would be a one man army. He listens with intent, enjoying the buzzing feeling in his head and the pleasant numbness in his fingers. This is the kind of thing he needs to unwind every so often.. even if..
"Well, shit." He pours her a new glass just as quickly as she finishes, figuring she's going to need it.
"You take the cake on sad stories there, I say. But here you're alive so.. I guess it's like a second chance, right?"
Silver linings?
no subject
But he's not wrong. It's definitely a second chance and she nods slowly as she considers it. "Yes, that's true. A second chance... And one I don't want to waste." She holds up her cup a little towards him, as if in a toast.
"To living our lives to the fullest?"
no subject
"Yeah.. it's a sad dog standing in a puddle. We'll pass it along month to month." He laughs lightly, a toothy smile crossing his face rather quickly, another sip of his alcohol down. This place was oddly lonely, even if he'd contented himself with the others being here just not... here. He could go visit them in their tubes but it wasn't quite the same as a lively conversation with Quatre or annoying the living hell out of Wufei for the fun of it.
He blinks for a moment as she offers up the toast, snapping him out of his thoughts. He nods, putting his glass up with a smile and tapping it against hers gently.
"Don't chug it. I have a feeling we're in dangerous territory right now." ... He says before filling his mouth totally with alcohol and swallowing.
