Who: Duo Maxwell ([personal profile] braidedwonder) & Mipha ([personal profile] fisherwife)
What: Lonely Hearts Club Goes Camping ™
When: Early February
Where: Woods around Wyver
Warning(s): Possible warnings for language, talking about war and violence, mentions of nightmares and etc.

As awesome and adventurous as Nysa has proven to be so far.. even someone like Duo could feel a little lonely from time to time. Yes, Mika and a Tekkadan crew did a damn good job of making him feel like someone out there might just understand, but there was no way he was going to saddle them with all the goings on of his own war. They shared the common shackles of having gone through struggle, both to live and to simply thrive, and there was no revoking that. Even if they'd only shared shreds of their experience in life, it was more than he'd managed to share with most people around here. Even if he was sure as untouched snow that absolutely no one here could know him and his past, there's no revoking a former gundam pilot's paranoia about being recognized, being known, all those consequences...

He's just plain unwilling to accept all of those, and so he keeps to himself, mostly. Social enough, but not nearly as social and sharing as he could be.

However, when Mipha mentions once, in passing, probably thru text message, that another person she'd known from home had left... a little plan sprouts in that only at times brilliant mind.

- - So Duo proposes a camp out. It might do them both well to just get out of their respective cities for a little while and simply enjoy the woods and everything that went along with it. He'd even offered to take on packing their foods and drinks, which happens to include a little bit of bubbly because he thinks Mipha could use more of that, honestly.

Relaxation, time for herself instead of serving other people. All the things that Duo, really, never found himself doing.

They've hiked in to where they'd decided to call it, and Duo has finally decided the tent is secured enough when he pokes his head out of the front -

"Any luck with the fire Mipha? Isn't like we'll freeze to death but these damn bugs, man.."

A true space boy who hates bugs. What a good camping partner.

It was a good idea, honestly. Although she had her background as a princess, Mipha had traveled around with Zelda and the other Champions. Camping out was, naturally, part of the process, thought typically setting up the fire wasn't one of her duties. Who sent the fish to play with fire??

Suddenly she really wishes Urbosa was here. Call down a little lightning, set a little fire... If anyone could do it with precision and not set the entire rest of the woods on fire, it'd be her.

Mipha's so busy concentrating that Duo's voice catches her off-guard immediately. She fumbles with her tools, drops them, stares a moment at what seems to be a good metaphor for her life recently, then sighs and picks them up again. A weak smile is thrown Duo's way.

"Almost. Sorry, I'm not sure where my head is." Well, she does know, but whatever. She takes a breath and actually concentrates now, able to get some sparks going. A little flame begins to grow from it and Mipha sits back with a pleased look. "If we keep feeding it, it should stay for a while. Perhaps you won't completely become a bug buffet." She can't help teasing him.

Mipha appreciates it though--It's nice to be around people who just forget she's not, exactly, one of them. Humans--and those that can at least pass for human-- vastly outnumber her, so it's hard not to be constantly reminded that she's different, one way or another.

She rests her arms on her legs, watching the flame grow. "Oh-- No, I'm alright." She looks to the tent and then the fire, and then lastly at Duo, tilting her head curiously.

"Have you done this sort of thing before? Camping, I mean." She smiles, as if enjoying something of a private joke as she continues. "I used to quite a bit, but I'm afraid I'm a little out of practice."

Mipha shifts to get comfortable sitting on the ground, watching Duo and listening curiously. She knows a little about him and his life so far, but she's always interested in knowing more about the people she considers her friends.

She turns her head to peek up through the trees at the stars she can see through the branches. "It is quite beautiful. I've sort of missed sleeping out in the open, truthfully. We sleep in large pools together normally, and it's a rather open area under the throne. You can't really see up, but you can see out." She smiles a little in nostalgia. "There's not much like it here--And sleeping in a bathtub isn't quite the same at all."

It's a joke...maybe. A little. She had slept in the bath a couple of times but it's not as comfortable. "It's a little disorienting that the stars are so different from what I knew, though..."

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-04 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's a bit difficult to explain, I suppose." She laughs a little. "It's more like his throne is on a raised platform, and we sleep under the platform? I'll have to draw it out one day." Mipha shakes her head, smiling despite herself. "I wish I could show you... Our domain was so beautiful-- Though I suppose I might be a little biased."

Just a little.

His question makes her quickly shakes her head. "Oh, no, I'll be alright. I can go for a while without needing to be in water, and thankfully this place isn't nearly as dry as, say, a desert. So I can withstand it for quite some time. I mad sure to bathe before we went on this trip so it won't be a problem." Mipha's smile turns gentle and fond though. "But thank you for worrying. I think you're actually the first person to question about that."

Being out among the stars does remind her of a question of her own though, and she tilts her head curiously. "How did you get out there, if I can ask? It didn't seem like traveling among the stars was just an idle hobby."
fisherwife: (I'm not saying I'm drunk)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-05 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing to say to that, because Duo's right--They're allowed their biases and indulgences now more than ever, aren't they? She covers her mouth, laughing despite herself to be fair, it's not so much laughing at Duo as it is the entire situation and the thought of Duo frantically running back into town only to throw her into a fountain or something.

The sound of the fire is comforting, as are the sound of the woods around them. The sounds are just different enough to be strange, but still somehow familiar enough to be comforting to Mipha. She sits back, leaning back on on hand as she watches the flames dance. "You're very sweet, Duo. But I won't let anyone know, of course. I'm sure you have a reputation to uphold." She's teasing him though, head tilting curiously.

Had Duo ever mentioned exactly what he did back before the Storm? She has a feeling he might've in passing mentioned it, but she can't quite remember. "What happened? When you got caught, I mean."

Mipha watches him a moment, trying to actually gauge his age-- humans and hylians aged much faster than the Zora, after all, and she found it difficult to place a person's age by looks alone. He certainly didn't seem much older than Zelda or Link had been, and thinking of them and the struggles they'd gone through during this whole war too...

It definitely makes her heart ache, for him and for them. She has been considering considerably young by her peoples' standards too, granted, but still. "Seems we can never escape war, no matter where we may go." She falls quiet a moment, watching the flames dance. "I'm sorry you had to fight in it so young. It's not an easy thing. It can feel like the entire weight of the world is on the shoulders of you and your weapons."

At least, in her experience.

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-07 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Not at the moment, no..." She'll give him that, even if both sides seem to be letting the tensions brew beneath the surface. It's only a matter of time before it all comes to a head. But then, she supposes they both know that, so saying it out loud won't do much more than depress them both.

Mipha sits up a little ore with interest as Duo continues, eyes going wide in amused delight as he pulls out the bottle. She definitely recognizes it, which makes her laugh. "Did you steal that from the party?"
fisherwife: (We couldnt find you anywhere)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-08 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's true, I suppose..." Mipha lets out a breath of air on a bit of a sigh, smiling despite herself. Duo was good at that, reminding her not to drive herself crazy with worrying about the 'what if's, for which she was very appreciative. Otherwise she might work herself into stomach ulcers or something, and she's not sure her own healing abilities would work on that...

She laughs a little, reaching out to take one of the cups. "I should be the responsible one here and scold you for stealing, or something, but..." Mipha shakes her head. "I suppose I can let it go this time, provided you pour me some." No time like the present to start, right?

Mipha laughs and shakes her head, sipping her drink and closing her eyes at the familiar taste. It was almost strangely comforting, though it did make her mind turn back to Link. Their last real conversation had been at that party and then things had gotten so busy again... There had always been the thought of 'we have time,' up until they ran out of it.

You'd think she would've learned her lesson the first time. She looks down at her cup with a slightly bitter smile and takes another sip. "I think this is how alcoholism starts... It's probably a good thing this is harder to get in Olympia." Which was where she preferred to stay these days.

Still, she tilts her head curiously at him. "That's rather altruistic of you," she says, though her tone is slightly teasing with it. "I believe there's a human story I was told about once, about some figure that did something like that. Steal from the rich, give to the poor?"
fisherwife: (the cops are being surprisingly chill)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-10 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
She looks over, a little concerned, though she keeps her voice light. "Was that a confession? They say that's the first step on the road to recovering from addiction..."

Mipha smiles and shakes her head with a thoughtful little hum. "No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it seem like I think you selfish. I suppose it's more... You don't seem the type to help those who could help themselves. That is... Well, let's say there's someone who's in debt. They're perfectly healthy in mind and body, but instead of working, they ask to borrow the money from you. I don't see you getting them the money, but I can see you pointing them in the direction of a job to earn it themselves, or something like that." A pause and she adds. "Or taking care of the people he's in debt to some other way, I suppose, if you were close enough to them..." Maybe not, you know, MURDER, but scaring them off or something.

She tilts her head and looks to him. "Does that make sense?"
fisherwife: (other than the jail part)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-11 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Mipha hums in something like understanding. While she hadn't quite lived it herself, she'd seen the way the world had fallen into chaos after Link had been put to sleep. "It's not a bad way to do things." It's better for the other person too, to be kickstarted in the right direction rather than develop such learned helplessness, though Mipha knows she herself struggles with finding the balance between when to help and when to, you know, kick.

"It might be a little hard to imagine, but it was similar for my home. Not being easy, I mean. Things got very bad very quickly, and in the end it just became about...coping, rather than fixing."
fisherwife: (The joke is on me)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-13 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Mipha is quiet for a long moment, mulling over his words. It sounded... Rough, for lack of a better term, and she tosses back the last of her cup before she smile and holds it out for a refill.

She wants to know more, but it sees obvious that Duo's a little reluctant to talk about it. Mipha can't tell if it's because he, personally, doesn't want to discuss it, or because he doesn't think this is the appropriate time for it, since the original intention seemed to be to cheer her--them both?--up. Or maybe it's a mix of both.

"Duo... Would you tell me more? About the war, or your life before it? If it's not too...difficult to talk about, I mean. If we're going to be friends, I'd like to get to know you more." Might as well be straight-forward with it.

To be fair, you're all babies compared to her. Mipha can't accurately gauge his age, though she figures he's around the same age as Link and Zelda. She smiles lightly though. "I know, and I'm sorry. But I'm curious to learn more about you, and unfortunately it seems hard to separate those sad things from that goal."

The war and everything seems to be as much a part of him as anything else, and clearly it's what's shaped him the most. She doubts she could learn more about him without learning more about it too, so she doesn't quite see the point in trying to avoid it.

"I suppose I simply don't want you to feel like you have to avoid mentioning it or talking about it out of concern for upsetting me. I promise I can handle it." Mipha laughs a little and drinks some more. "If it helps, I may not even remember anything you tell me by the morning if I keep going at this rate." But she's joking...mostly.

"We don't really have the concept of 'street kid,' I'm afraid." Well, perhaps she should rephrase that. She tilts her head thoughtfully. "Perhaps among the Hylians that exists, but... The Zora are such a close community. While children certainly have their own parents, more often than not anyhow, everyone is raised rather communally. If a child were to lose their parents, they'd still be raised by all of us..."

She drinks thoughtfully, blinking way the fuzziness to concentrate on the conversation. "Although, our communities are also much smaller, so perhaps that's only why it could work that way."

"But you didn't have that." Friends of parents to help him out, she means; that much is rather obvious to her. She watches him fidget and it makes her smooth the drape of the cloth she wore too.

Solo and Duo. Mipha smiles a little to herself and looks into her cup at the alcohol swirling around in it. "I believe you mentioned a church before. Is that where you and the others stayed?"
fisherwife: (When you get to his house)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-16 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Sheesh. Talk about unlocking the door to the Department of Tragic Backstory. Mipha just listens, taking it in. "How long were you at the church? Were they the ones who caught you stealing and tried to take you in afterwards?"
fisherwife: (you slapped the bag of goldfish away)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-17 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, she doesn't totally regret it okay?? She DID want to know, it's just sad. She listens quietly, just drinking and listening and trying to put the pieces together of how Duo Maxwell was.

Which reminded her-- "Your last name. You took it from the church?" She can't help but smile a little. "It sounds like you really liked it there, despite everything." A pause, a moment of hesitation and she continues softly. "...I suppose I don't need to ask to know it didn't last very long."
fisherwife: (if you go to jail tonight)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-18 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that he throws the rest of his alcohol back like that confirms it for her, even without him going on to verbally do so.

"I see," is as she says, mulling it over in her mind. She doesn't think Duo would appreciate outright shows of pity or sympathy, so Mipha saves her sympathetic look for the inside of her cup. "Thank you for telling me. I'm sure it's hard, and... You don't have to tell me more if you wouldn't like to."

She goes quiet a moment, thinking, before she offers, "shall I tell you something about myself too, to make it even?"
fisherwife: (On a scale of 1-10)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-22 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Mipha laughs a little, though there's not much humor in it. What to talk about? Most of her things would have to do with unrequited love or something, and that doesn't seem appropriate to think about.

(It also makes her think of Link again and how he's back up in stasis, making her just feel depressed again. She drinks some more.)

"...We had a war too, of sorts." She begins, speaking slowly as she figures out how to explain it. "There was a great evil threatening to rise and put the entire world at risk. My friends and I were chosen as the Champions of our people to help fight against it, but in the end... In the end, we failed. It has grown too quick and too smart while we hadn't been paying attention, an we paid for it dearly."

Mipha takes another deep drink, finishing off her cup again. "...I was killed. My spirit trapped in my Divine Beast-- A sort of... What was it called? A 'mecha,' I suppose? Either way, I was stuck inside of it for a hundred years. Just... watching as this evil grew and destroyed so much in its path..."
fisherwife: (he kinda resembled a guppy fish.)

[personal profile] fisherwife 2018-02-23 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Mipha can't help but laugh, feeling fuzzier as the alcohol settles into her system more. "This isn't quite the award I wanted to win. Do I get a plaque? I'm sure there are others with sadder stories."

But he's not wrong. It's definitely a second chance and she nods slowly as she considers it. "Yes, that's true. A second chance... And one I don't want to waste." She holds up her cup a little towards him, as if in a toast.

"To living our lives to the fullest?"
