It isn’t easy starting life in a new place. It quickly becomes apparent that you are in dire need of two very important things: money and a good name. In addition to full-time jobs, certain people in Olympia will reward handsomely for helping them with tasks. Submit any AC eligible thread of participating in this log's prompts for One (1) Olympia REP point HERE. Threads involving your flora/fauna submission may also be submitted, even if your submission is not made official game canon. FOR THE RECORD     It’s time to put on your hiking shoes. Characters will be approached by both Evras and Lysa at separate times. Both individuals are interested in recording species of plants and animals-- El Nysa is bursting with all sorts of life, after all! It is impossible to chronicle all of it without help. You will be provided with a journal to chronicle your findings. Each submission pays 100 silver. OOC: We need YOUR help in worldbuilding the area in and around Olympia and The Outlook! Create a creature or plant and submit it HERE by August 31st at 11:59 PM EST. ONE entry per character only. NOTE: If you have accepted a job at The Sanctuary or Simwe Institute, you MUST submit your entry to your boss to maintain your position. You may assume a character got the job if they established contact, even if an official offer hasn't been extended yet. Although an entry will net you TWO (2) Olympia REP points no matter what, we will be choosing a maximum of 20 entries to include in the official bestiary for future encounters. THE BIRDS AND THE BEES     Along with the request to record traits of a certain specimen, Evras and Lysa independently ask for more quick favors. Certain species, due to their unique natures, aren’t as prone to procreating as one would hope. They need your help. The directions for these requests, provided by Evras or Lysa, are simple. You will be provided a small amount of heavy aphrodisiacs (and a mask) to spray in a particular region. Because the natural aphrodisiacs of the island run a bit thin there, the wildlife has been less... willing to comply. Each species you help will net you 50 silver. Three species in particular are in need of a little help. Note: There will be a mask provided. Forgetting it may mean you start to feel some of the effects yourself. You may also be immune. Please put appropriate warnings in threads if applicable. Xlarix, also commonly referred to as the love bug. Found in MURKWELL HOLLOW. They have an ability to release literal positive energy, making those exposed to it more willing to be friendly and jovial with another. Even the most heated rivals can easily become the closest companions. You may even be tempted to temporarily abandon the request and do something fun with your new best friend. Unfortunately, while many have desired to use its effects in diplomacy, its effects only last a few minutes at best. Despite their powers to assist others in bridging emotional gaps, they are vicious insects. During mating, they engage in battle, normally losing the lives of both parties before their spawn is even properly produced. This is why they need a little help. Try to break up the fights as much as you can. For the Xlarix, being in each other's presence for long enough will eventually get them to calm down and continue the process. You may get unlucky in the process and end up with an extremely painful sting that requires healing, however. The pain increases with time, and if you allow it to go untreated for more than a day, it will be excruciating, enough that it may be debilitating, for 12 hours before eventually healing on its own. Sepht, found in EDRATHE RUINS: Both shy and antisocial, it’s no wonder these little marsupials don’t have much luck in the mating department. They prefer to live in isolation, and are much more concerned with hoarding everything they can get their hands on. This includes stealing anything you may have brought with you. As a warning, they are incredibly strong. They can also fly, so good luck catching them after they’ve made off with your stuff. Let’s hope you can get back that magical sword or enchanted necklace of yours. Once you have sprayed the chemical in their habitat, do not stick around the area. Despite being more suggestible to mate now, they are shy to the core, and will not come out of hiding until they are sure the coast is clear. Cinjaw, found JUST OUTSIDE OLYMPIA. Domestic animals kept by local farmers in the outskirts of Olympia. These guys are just really, really lazy. Too lazy to care about things like passing on their genes. Honestly, if it weren’t for the efforts of humans and the fact that their meat is too delicious for the Olympians to allow these creatures to go extinct, they would have been wiped out years ago. Stay too long near the herd, and you will begin to feel extremely lethargic yourself. Nothing sounds better than using the person next to you as a pillow for your nap, or dropping everything you’re doing to go sleep in that hay. Hopefully someone finds you and is kind enough to wake you up. After spraying the aphrodisiac, you won’t want to stick around. They are loud: loud enough to damage hearing without proper ear protection (Now you know why those farmers walk around with ear plugs). HELP A NEIGHBOR     Being new is tough in any given neighborhood. This is especially the case when you’re a newly arrived refugee. Though you’ve been welcomed here, you haven’t established a lot of trust in the community. Your neighbors don’t know a single thing about you, and that name tag fiasco doesn’t count. Fortunately for all of you, the rule of this game is simple. There is no monetary payment, but isn't it priceless to feel good about being a good samaritan? Make yourself helpful. Did you neighbor mention wanting to take their pet chicken out on a walk? Offer to do it for them and they may pay you back in a meal or a small gift. Did one of them mention needing help with rearranging their collection of thousands of cat figurines? Well, who better than to ask but you! You over there, why not help your fellow refugee by doing this task together? It never hurt to do some teamwork. Or maybe your roommate is the one taking that chicken out on a walk, and you’re just ready to judge. Complete judgment. But hey, that’s fair. BLOOD BANK     CW: Needles, Blood One of the things that quickly becomes apparent about life in Olympia is that all citizens are welcome, including those who may possess unique dietary requirements. The Blood Bank is an institution that has stood proudly for many years, and in addition to providing meals for some of its citizens, the supply is invaluable for care in The Sanctuary, research in Simwe Institute, and for use in certain types of magic. They're offering you a special today, for your blood in particular! You just look so... healthy and able-bodied. Donate a few pints, and you'll earn an easy 200 silver. Unfortunately, the center is so busy today that they've had to call on volunteers, and depending on who you've met so far, your particular volunteer may look familiar. It's... another refugee. Wait, are they even qualified?! How did they even get roped into this?! Qualified or not, the job pays well for both the refugees donating, and the ones drawing the blood (much more for whoever's donating, though. Fair is fair.). A blood drawing set inclusive of clean needles, antiseptic swabs and a blood storage kit, will be provided. Sticking a needle into a vein isn't as easy as those people in the Sanctuary make it seem, though. You may not always get it the first time, so try, try again! And if you still can't hit the bulls-eye? A rogue-looking Olympian "volunteer" approaches and hands you a knife. Apparently, cutting right into the vein and collecting the blood in a saucer also works; the staff would only need to sterilize the blood with a spell afterward. And about the gaping wound you'd cause? They always have healing potions on hand for when things go wrong (but just like the potions from before, they have been known to cause some nausea). You'll do anything to help your fellow Olympian, right? What kind of criteria are we looking at for creating animals? Can they be monster-like with some weird powers or something more like you'd find in nature in the real world? Also for the character's appearance, should we avoid drawing artwork from different fandoms?

[Luckily, Claire now works for the Sanctuary. It's a natural fit given that she's a nurse. So, the call for blood and volunteers (whatever the reason) might not be too terrible given her inclination to get involved in this place. She at least can avoid bruising any veins. Less stabbing is always good.]

Are you here to donate?

[There's a brief smile offered to anyone that ventures in, and if she spots someone trying to fumble about with the tools she'll walk over to inspect. She's not keen on untrained volunteers jabbing refugees with needles.]

[Richard arrives upon hearing that this is where people give up their blood. He wasn't told it was for dietary reasons, mostly because he immediately pronounced he had a terrible headache. So he arrives at the Sanctuary looking critically at the equipment. This is when Claire walks up.]

Well, not as such. Usually I have a person to do this for me.

The Birds & the Bees

[There's truly something wondrous about seeing these little colorful creatures flying along the canopy. Loz found himself oddly charmed by the Sephts colorful plumage and demure stature. While he would never say it aloud, the overgrown brute finds them to be a tad cute with their big innocent brown eyes and shockingly tiny hands. He especially like how strong the little critters are. One of them, a little blue one with tiny hands upon its wings, tried to fight him for his satchel. Loz was plenty annoyed at first and tried to squash the Sepht like a bug but the fluffy creature managed to successfully steal his stuff but also held up his incoming fist with absurd might like it was nothing. Perhaps that's how these loveable marsupials won over their harshest critic.

Content with just watching the little critters scurry about, Loz eventually start to follow one with yellow wings through the woods. The little Sepht is quick but Loz is quicker. He nimbly hops from tree to tree with no effort, not at all concerned about how high he is from the jagged ground below. He's damn near ten stories high at this point with just a willowy tree branch as leverage. It's almost unreal how the large brute is able to linger up there upon the branches without breaking them.

Of course no one would expect someone like Loz to be so fleet-footed. People are lucky that he hasn't felt the need to attack anyone as of late. The silver haired menace is quite terrifying when angered.]

I think it got away. [He calls from above as he glances down.] It was flying south but I lost it!

[Wait, is he trying to catch one of these adorable creatures? Maybe.]

Too many trees! It's hard to see.


Help A Neighbor

[When the local stonemasons in Olympia's downtown district needed help carrying a few heavy supplies, they of course asked the burly strong silver-haired guy with the strange glowing green eyes. Loz was minding his own business when one of the men approached. The glare he gave the man was downright haughty since Loz doesn't like being bothered by anyone, especially by weirdos he doesn't know. At the promise of some free lunch, Loz quickly changes his tone and agrees to assist. Little did the stonemasons realize that they scored big with their new volunteer.

Able to lift things twice his own size with relative ease, imagine their surprise to see Loz carrying two giant tree logs like its nothing. He simply picked them off the horse drawn cart and lifted them onto his shoulders like nothing. He had to yell at the speechless worker to figure out where to place the stuff but once he does, Loz obediently does as he's told and sets them down beside the incomplete monument the men are working on.

Loz decides to keep helping them for a time too. He's literally ferrying loads of bricks, stone and steel from one part of town to the other without anyone's help. Hell, he's not even breaking a sweat from all this heavy lifting and seems utterly immune to fatigue. While he's completely unaware of how much his good deeds are winning favor with onlookers, Loz is still a tad cranky.]

Move it, will ya?! [Yeah, you're kind of standing in his way, asshole. So scram!] I outta drop these damn bricks on your head!

[...He's particularly moody today.]

[ Lavellan is sprinting, fully geared out as he runs after one of these quick little flying creatures. Breathing heavily as he leaps over logs and boulders after it. Whatever this little bugger has got it's definitely not wanting to give it up. Lavellan looks over his shoulder yelling to his apparent companion: ]

Hurry! We'll lose sight of it gets to the trees before we do!

[ Unfortunately for Lavellan he hadn't been given the memo and is currently lying down unconscious. It might be in the dirt, might be in the hay, otherwise he's out cold sleeping deeply. ]

Help a Neighbour

[ Lavellan had been coerced into helping a few of the bakers on the street to carry flour inside their house for the morning bread. He couldn't outright say no to such an old couple after all. Regardless, he's done his job and promised a loaf for the task being done. He feels sore and achy and all he can do is sit down and take a breath. He holds the little loaf, wrapped up in linen in his hand when he looks over to someone nearby who does seem like their in need of aid. Getting up he stows the loaf away and approaches with a raised hand. ]

ONE ― THE BIRDS AND THE BEES.

[ Akira needs money. maybe not to buy airsoft guns and movie prop swords and whips to wave about, but to get around in a world completely foreign to him. and just like old times, he's obligated to sign up for just about any task available in order to do exactly that. apparently that means he needs to go out to the wilds and spray pheromones to help strange creatures mate. it's... not exactly the same as running a register or cleaning dishes, but he's gotta do what he's gotta do! ―right? right.

you may catch him in a variety of places, because he has no chill and once he is set to a task, he doesn't know when to stop unless his body gives out or until he's told to go to sleep. let's just say he is used to that. maybe you decided it was a good idea to go with the boy to go make the fauna get it on. perhaps you are out there on your own dime. if it's out of pure happenstance, he is at any of the three locations holding the species most in need of assistance. in order:

at i.) Murkwell Hollow, Akira is a greenhorn to all of this pheromone stuff. he has decided a mask would not be needed, possibly because the area appears to be open enough or because the Xlarix's influence has affected his judgment. it doesn't change the fact that not wearing a mask is a very bad idea. a number of things may happen here. he could accidentally spray you with the aphrodisiac due to not knowing you were there. Akira himself may drape his body over yours as a result of both the aphrodisiacs and the positive energy released by the Xlarix. it doesn't matter if he knows you or not. it's going to be weird regardless.

even if the results from his original destination may end up being terrible, he continues on. you may also find him at ii.) Edrathe Ruins, where he has finally smartened up and wore his mask only to find one of the Sepht snatching the journal he had been carrying around with him from his home. there's more chasing than spraying going on there. by the time he returns to iii.) outside of Olympia, he's hardly even working. he is literally asleep, riiiight on top of one of the Cinjaw. it's been a long day, so hopefully anyone else out there on the job will be nice to wake him up before getting the herd excitable. ]

TWO ― HELP A NEIGHBOR.

There's a cat up there.

[ a singular finger is pointed up towards a particularly large building in the Market District of Olympia. one of the frantic natives made mention of losing their pet to their curiosity, as the feline broke loose from its domestic chains and has since lost itself to the city. Akira has been following the cat for quite some time with the use of his Third Eye, but as expected, it is quite the nimble animal. he could very easily wear his mask and climb the walls to try and rescue the cat, but for the sake of staying under the radar, he decides it may be best to try and do so through normal means.

and hence, he's looking at you and hoping for assistance. ]

Will you help me? It needs to return home. Their owner is very upset.

THREE ― BLOOD BANK.

[ as much as he would like to volunteer in the act of taking blood, Akira is more used to being on the receiving end of such an act. with his experience as someone's guinea pig, donating is certainly up his alley. the money being offered for such a charitable act is nothing to scoff at, so he will be as patient as can be while waiting for the next person to assist him. maybe he should be concerned when he hears someone scream in the distance, probably as a result of a not-so-clean removal of blood from their veins. perhaps they're just deathly afraid of needles. that must be it.

when it's finally his turn, Akira is offering the "phlebotomist" (aka you) his body with both arms extended outward. that's how these things work, right. ]

I've been told my veins are sometimes hard to find, so... be gentle, please?

[Documenting fauna (especially when he hears Evras is hunting for observations and he's gonna do everything he can to avoid that guy) sounds sketchy as hell, but it's hard to argue with an easy 100 silver. He agrees to Lysa's terms and intends to stick primarily to the flora part, and sets out.

A. The problem, of course is he has terrible penmanship and can't draw worth a flying flip, so this is going about as well as one can expect. At one point, you may find him sitting in front of what appears to be a kind of weed (though a nice looking one), trying to painstakingly detail it in his journal, grumbling all the while. This is not his bag. Why aren't there odd jobs for doing fun things?

B. Of course, documenting plants gets boring as hell after awhile, and he's still gunning to find the fastest way out of Olympia, so he uses this as an excuse to explore the area and maybe find something worthwhile. Unfortunately, he's not the only person who's taken up the offers presented by Evras and Lysa, and despite wearing a jumpsuit, he's still a cute furry mammal who looks like he belongs here. It might not be hard to mistake him for one of the creatures you're meant to be documenting.

I mean, look at him sniffing the air and climbing the trees. Or maybe pausing to lick a paw or yank a burr out. If you somehow missed him in all of the time you've spent together over the past month. Or maybe you should tell him to stop looking so adorable if you dare.

C. Alternately, you've followed the sound of some dramatic yelling to find Rocket on top of some poor hapless civilian looking ready to punch him in the face. Judging by the broken nose, it's already happened at least once, and Rocket sounds a little hysterical as he yells:] I swear if you say one word, you have had it. You got me, jackass?

[Maybe you should... break in there.]

[There's no denying it- Rocket is absolutely terrible at being a good neighbor, even if he knows that it's the only way to get anywhere when you're stuck in a place. He has no way out of Olympia right now and if he's too unruly, he has a feeling in his gut about what will happen, Darma and her lackeys be damned. That conversation with Evras still has him on edge.

Honestly, it probably doesn't matter how genteel he is. It could still happen.

D. Rocket's one contribution seems to be repairwork- everything here is so archaic that a simple fix seems like a miracle of god to these people. He wishes he was getting paid for it, but it's so easy maybe he can attract someone willing to pay for his services. At least the odd jobs aren't completely beneath him.

Having to endure the affection of a dozen grateful widows, on the other hand... Not great. Rocket's trying his damnedest not to claw anyone's eyes out, but he's still something of a novelty around here, which means he might finish a job and get an unwelcome pat on the head or, in some cases, a very enthusiastic embraces. You'll have probably stumbled upon at least one of these things, and Rocket's patience is wearing thin. Save him.

E. After a long hard day of doing jobs that he isn't getting paid for, Rocket can be found at the most disreputable bar he can find, sitting on a stool at the counter, and running up a tab that he most definitely can't afford right now. And he's more than happy to bitch about the shit day he's been having and all of the horrible goings on from the overly affectionate housewives to being stalked by nature observers to almost any other insignificant misfortune he can come up with.]

It's not worth it.

F. But, of course, if you happen to see him standing nearby with his tail swishing back and forth in agitation, it's nothing. He's not thinking about it. He's not weighing the pros and cons in his head so hard that when you address him, he jumps like you just scared him.

And if he looks annoyed, it's because you snuck up on him- not because you broke his concentration or that he's a little bit keyed up.] What? You never seen a guy on a streetcorner before?

[ Well, Taako has been hanging out here too, mostly minding his own business - texting occasionally and doing his best to leave Rocket to his pacing. But eventually, he clears his throat to get Rocket's attention.

The fact that Rocket is. Well. A raccoon doesn't even seem to register. He's met a whole family of weirdly polite Bugbears so, one sort of irritable but much smaller furry dude isn't even a thing. This may prove to be a dangerous underestimation. ]

Oh, sure, sure, all the time, no problem, my guy, the only issue is that I had kind of staked this corner out already? And your whole, uh [how to say this politely] sort of pre-rampage pacing [mission failed] is probably scaring some of the customer base off.

[ This might be . . . kind of ominous coming from a guy who seems to be holding a jar of blood. ]

[His desire to help isn't anything unique. Funds are important, not having any in a still-strange land is problematic. He isn't sure why the farmer's can't deal with this themselves, but he's also not going to be overly-critical about something he's getting paid to do.

He's here, which is the important thing, and he's approaching one of the larger Cinjaw. It's aware of him, but seemingly indifferent. Sad, but good...in a sense. Good for him, but sad in that it -- they seem to lack any primal instincts about fleeing when a creepy bipedal, masked thing approaches with sex stimulants.]

[Yusei doesn't particularly care for the concept of aphrodisiacs. Artificially inducing some sort of affection doesn't sit well with him. He does understand the need to ensure procreation, though, so in the end he does take a few bottles of aphrodisiacs to spray the local livestock.

Unfortunately, he chose to do so after an all-nighter working on a steam engine. He was already prone to nodding off at this point, hanging around a herd of lethargic animals isn't helping that at all. It wouldn't be unusual for someone else helping on the farm to find him leaning against one of the aforementioned animals, both of them sound asleep. Another one is nosing at his hair, apparently tempted to eat it. Save him.]

However, after he's given time to recover, he's asked to help out. Being the guy he is, he refuses the extra compensation required (he already got the 200 flat fee, he doesn't need to take more) and agrees to help out. ...That being said, even with living in the orphanage with both Martha and Doc Schmitt, he's a little worried about his ability to take blood properly. [Yusei's name tag wasn't so questionable that it'd send the locals running, but it does bring up awkward questions. Even so, when he spots a family getting ready to toss a few days worth of food out, he asks them what their problem is. Their fridge stopped working, it seems, and they don't have the funds to get it repaired right away, so some of the things that will go bad quickly need to either be used or thrown out.

When they hear his offer to use whatever tools they have in the house to try and fix it, they're overjoyed. So now anyone who spies Yusei dismantling the back of a fridge through the open kitchen window will have that to contend with. It turns out to be that something merely burned out, and replacing it should be easy enough-Yusei actually salvaged something similar from the junkyard a few days prior. The family is happy to wait for him to come back with the part, and in his haste to exit the house, Yusei might end up nearly bowling into you.]

[Boy howdy, he sure does look a right mess. He's not wearing his jacket or his gloves, and his hair looks mussed up, with several spots of soot dusting his arms and face.

Alternatively, he comes out at a more relaxed pace after fixing the fridge, and holding a small tray of cake that the family had started making with the more expirable ingredients. They'd given him more than half of it despite his protests (they weren't going to make it if they hadn't had to empty the fridge in the first place, and he saved them so much time and money, please take it!), and so he ends up looking rather lost as he walks out the door with it. It's just a simple butter cake cut into squares, but it's all the more delicious after some hard work. Still, he can't eat all of this alone...so when he catches you staring, he's going to avail himself of the opportunity.]

[Ridiculous.

Out of all things to be recruited for, it's this. Against his better judgment, Venom accepts the mission, suiting up with the proper mask. He heads for the hollows first, trying to keep the creatures' descriptions in mind while looking for them. He spots these large blue insects, and they are fighting like mad. Venom huffs, knowing what he has to do to get them to mate.

He lets out a gentle spray of the assigned aphro before going in to separate the fight. It's the first time he's had to play mediator to giant hornets, but as soon as he gets close, he starts feeling... happy. It's like all that gloominess vanished, and he can't help smiling. This is the type of feeling that must be shared, so he's going to his fellow refugees.]

It feels good to help out, doesn't it?

B. The Sepht

Next stop: the ruins.

Even Venom has to admit these creatures are cute. And he can relate to them being so shy and antisocial. Though one just tried to pickpocket him and fly off, and he swears he just got hit by Potemkin's fist. How can a tiny thing pack such power? It might take him a bit to recover before he can spray the area properly. Maybe lend him a hand?]

C. The Cinjaw

[With his mission coming to an end, he decides to leave the one closest to home for last. This shouldn't be too bad, as it's just a couple of herds of domesticated beasts. They remind him vaguely of antelopes back home, or what's left of them after the Crusades. Soon he starts feeling sleepy despite being wide awake moments ago.

After all the spraying and being forced to break up fights and put up with superpowered winged monkey creatures, maybe a short nap is in order.]

I think I need to lie down for a moment...

working off hours at the library and researching has given her something to do of course, but alisaie is not wont to sit still if she does not have to, and it's not long before she's feeling the itch to move and explore. so when the chance arrives to mingle with the local wildlife you can bet she's there.

the sepht come first. all is going well at first, until one blue little bugger makes off with the crystal rapier at her hip. oh, he'll pay for that - apologies if she bowls over the nearest person, that rapier was a gift that she will not surrender to little flying monkey puffs.

after that are the cinjaw, which seem far more docile and easy to handle, for which she is grateful. unfortunately she didn't get the memo about the.. lethargy thing, so when she starts to feel inordinately tired she sits herself down at the base of a broad tree, in a nice patch of thick, springy, grass. so warm.. she'll just rest for a moment.. perhaps all that chasing earlier had worn her down.

boom. she slumps right into the grass, fast asleep. zzz. ]

[ alisaie has never been the squeamish sort, be it blood or ichor or innards, her own or anything else's. you can bet she was that girl who picked up frogs and earthworms and dangled them over her brother's face.

so sure, she's willing to donate a bit if it helps, and she's got plenty. that it pays is an easy perk. until whoever's attending to her pricks her again and again and again to no avail, until a colorful bruise is beginning to bloom up the inside of her arm. her voice is dry as dead leaves. ]

[ After his escapade with the sephts, a herd of lazy cinjaws sounds perfect. Probably not gonna have to worry about any of them swiping his possessions, anyway, and even if they did, they move slowly enough they'd be easy to catch.

Priorities in order as ever, before he even gets to work on what he actually came here for, he's snapping pictures of the lethargic beasts of no burden. After all, they are pretty cool and don't mind him snapping away. Unlike the sephts. Seriously, those guys were the worst.

It's during the course of his photographic extravaganza that things take an unexpected turn; namely, Alisaie asleep beneath a tree. He blinks a few times, just to make sure he isn't seeing things, but no. That's really her, and this is really strange.

Maybe he shouldn't disturb her, because if she zonked out right in the middle of a field, thaaaat probably means she's exhausted. But, figuring she also probably wouldn't want to be left alone in the middle of a farm while taking her snoozle, he traipses over, entirely uncertain about what he's going to do next.

(At least she's not asleep on his shoulder this time.)

Stooping down next to her, he reaches out and gently shakes one shoulder. ]

Hey. We gotta stop meeting like this.

the target of his ire? a brightly colored sepht — a bright red that fades into an equally bright yellow. he pretty much looks like a parrot and a banana had a baby, except a lot more devilish. it hovers about ten feet away from where lance stands, finally rising back up to his feet. dangling from one of its hands is what appears to be... string? ]

Don't let him get away!

[ he just wanted to do a good deed, man... it's not like he hadn't participated in a blood drive before — his older brother was a nut for those kind of good samaritan things. his family did them all the time! so it should have been cake, easy peasy. he figured he'd go in, take a seat, maybe chat up the nurse a little if she happens to be cute, but cheese and crackers he probably should have realized things happened very differently here in alien planet land.

yes, he's talking about the knives. (why, why is it always knives.)

now lance wouldn't consider himself very faint of heart, or weak in the stomach, or anything at all like that. but there's definitely something about seeing your neighbor's arm get SLICED. THE HECK. UP. no more than two feet away from you that really, really makes you consider just how iron-stomached you thought you were.

needless to say, lance passes out even before his own attendee can get to him.

he comes back around though! blearily, groggily, he comes back around. whether or not he's still on the ground, or got hoisted someone so he wouldn't be in the way &madsh; it's not like he can really make sense of up or down at this point anyway. ]

Whoa... what...? [ his vision is still swimming, but for a second you (whether or not you've been made to attend to him, or you just so happened to be passing by, or (gasp) you're looking after him out of the kindness of your own heart, he might mistake you for a beautiful woman nurse.

[ Of course he's going to give blood for an easy 200 silver. Blood Banks back home don't pay people for their blood; the most you'd get is a bag of freebies and some brochures. So, to be paid to just sit there and stick his hand out? That's way too good to be true. Chuuya doesn't have any particular fear of needles, and even if your character were to break out the knife, he simply glances at it and sighs, rolling up his sleeve and clenching his fist. ]

You better have good technique. [ With the needle, or the knife. ]

[ And after he's done giving out his blood, it's time for a role switcheroo. Refugees who volunteer to draw some blood get paid too. There's no way he's not trying this. Yeah, forgoing the needle though ... Chuuya immeidately pulls out his own knife, doing a little knifetrick as he speaks to your character. ]

They said it's fine. [ 'They' being ... that shady Olympian from before. ] It's quicker like this, don't be a pussy.

[ He would certainly yield better results than if he were to actually pick up a needle and go poking around. ]


BIRDS AND BEES

[ A: The Xlarix. His day may have started off on a (fake) positive note, but it's definitely ending on a bad note. After tearing apart two battling moths, one of them (the female, or so he's told) had lodged its stinger into Chuuya's chest, and the pain can be felt almost immediately. ]

Shit ... [ Chuuya grips onto the wound, holding himself as the pain sharpens gradually. He wobbles a little on his feet, but it's not enouhg to deter him from the task just yet. ] I'm fine. Let's just stop these stupid bugs from killing each other.

[ B: The Cinjaw. This isn't -- it's really not like Chuuya sleep on the job. Yet, he's starting to feel incredibly tired, his eyelashes fluttering close and his body relaxing. He doesn't quite know what he's doing when he ... leans into the person beside him, wrapping him arms around them and resting his head against them as he closes his eyes. Don't tell him this actually happened, or he's going to want to break something when he's awake again. ]

[ C: The Option Nobody Will Ever Take. (18+ in the event smut actually happens) Nobody told him that these Sephts were kleptomanic little bastards. After hitting one on the head (he's good at this species-conservation thing, really), the angry little critter swoops down and swipes Chuuya's mask right off his face. The expression on his face when he realises that the mask is off is one of abject horror, because they may have sprayed the aphrodisiac minutes before. ]

You nasty little -- [ A hand goes clamping over his mouth. It'll be fine if he simply holds his breath, right? Maybe he hasn't even been affected yet. Anyway, Chuuya goes chasing the Sepht immediately, pointing frantically at it as it goes flying by your character.

despite his general grumpiness, archer has been trying to acclimate to this new... community... after all, generating good will could eventually be priceless. he remains pretty sure that it's only a matter of time until their situation in olympia turns sour, so befriending the locals could be a good idea.

when one of the neighbors asked if he'd be willing to help him clean, he was a bit hesitant at first, but eventually complied. loathe though he may be to admit it, he actually is good at cleaning. he's always been the type to immediately start cleaning up a mess if it's in front of him, and this is no exception. while there was no immediate monetary compensation on the horizon, the local was at least wealthy, and had promised he'd pay back the favor eventually.

so... why was his home... just filled with strange figurines of pretty girls? the owner of the house had asked that they reboxed each all of these figures, since he was going to be relocating them to a private gallery somewhere else in the city. ]

[ At first, it hadn't been so much a desire to help so much as acceptance for a job that paid. And a rudimentary, extremely single-minded wish to comply, because that's what he was told to do to preserve what's important to him. This seemed easy enough. Wear a mask (stuffed in his pocket currently) spray some weird stuff (the canister currently tossed over his shoulder) on stubborn animals, don't stick around. ]

I got it. [ ...orrr so he thought. ] I think.

[ Except he's not currently doing any of those things. Among Edrathe's ruins, he finally managed to track down an area teeming with life. Little winged creatures trill and hide in the trees, only appearing as flashes of feathers and color. And little sticky hands. Mikazuki's own hand is extended from where he kneels against some brush. Hesitant Sepht are chattering away inside, staying out of view but not running away thanks to his offering of a few snacks he'd stowed with him. He's patiently initiating a trade, because the creatures had managed to lift his only extra clip for his gun off of him. Having no innate "powers" of his own, and maybe for sentimental reasons, he'd rather not be stuck without being able to use it. If he hears footsteps, he'll click his tongue and issue a quiet shush. ]

Wait. They'll run away if you come closer.

[ And for once, he's really not sure that he can successfully chase one down. ]

[ II. & H...ORSES? ]

[ Mikazuki likes farmland. It's calming to him, and lazy animals seemed a lot easier to deal with, in the long run. Granted, Mikazuki didn't think their influence would turn him into a lazy animal himself. Whether or not you've already sprayed eau de sex parfum all over everything yet, Mikazuki is content to stay unaware and right where he is: curled up in a pile of hay like a stray cat, napping away in the dry warmth of the sun. Seemingly slacking on the job. Maybe dreaming? It's hard to tell when he's so still.

So, he's out like a light. Maybe he looks cuddly enough to join, or maybe he just needs a swift kick out of naptime. ]

[ III. THY NEIGHBORS, LOCKED TO CLAIR ]

[ It's not such an unusual sight to him. An orphanage in the parts of the city where people don't tend to look twice. Maybe he's a little too familiar with the establishment, expression not leaning much one way or the other, though he hadn't gone out of his way to interact with the children flitting about outside it. A woman had stopped him, citing needing help looking after the littler ones. There are too many, they're understaffed, they need supplies. Mikazuki probably would have declined, if it were left up to him. So happens, he wasn't the only refugee around at the time. Very quickly, it became not his decision to make thanks to the whirlwind of honor that happened to be by his side at the time.

Which is why he's sitting here now, faced with a baby. A drooly, lumpy, ham-wristed baby. At least it's... smiling? He thinks? ]

So, what do we do?

[ He assumes Clair knows, having volunteered them both. ]

[ IV. BLOODLET ]

[ He's not really sure what his blood might have to offer for anyone. It runs too hot, it's pumped full of metal. It's been spilled one too many times, and never like this. But it's such easy money that Mikazuki doesn't really think twice about going to check it out. Except he loses patience with the thrum of people very quickly, brow pressed flat as he glances around for a way to get this over with quickly. Seeing the needles poised above flesh makes him bypass it all entirely until he sees someone with a blade and a saucer instead. Perfect. ]

[ There's no job quite like getting some bugs randy. Near a particular bony area, Gaelio's equipped himself with a mask and has taken to kneeling in the earth, holding the aphrodisiac in a gloved hand before a couple of the bugs.

The positive energy, though. It's weird. Gaelio hasn't exactly experienced a good mood in years, so the surge of soft feelings is both familiar and alien to him at the same time. He's smiling, and it'd be noticable if he wasn't wearing a mask, but it's apparent enough in his eyes.

He doesn't, however, notice the bug crawling on the back of his collar, inching over the skin hiding behind his coat, aiming for his hairline.

Alternatively, if he notices you in Murkwell, he'll be cordially greeting you regardless of who you are or what you're doing... his good mood is weird, okay. ]

[ He's like 200cm tall, he's got plenty of blood to donate. With the scar streaking over his face, he looks like the sort of guy who's had his blood drawn before. Look, he's not even wincing when he gets jabbed incorrectly the first time... or second time... he's definitely looking his volunteer in the eye on the third round, but still says nothing until the knife comes out.

...except he's actually not saying anything there, either, and is just staring at the knife impassively before huffing out the shortest laugh. The sort of laugh that means nothing here is actually funny at all, the "I see what's going on here," sort of laugh.

Please either save him (or the knife guy) or stab him. ]

[It could be PTSD from the insects he woke up to in his home the other day. It could just be a reflex passed down from generation to generation. Maybe he hasn't quite been here as long as Gaelio has, but the positive energy does nothing to dissuade him from banging his fist against the nape of the Tall Guy's neck. He could have, should have gently placed the bug back down to rejoin the group, but it was straining enough to have to reach up and smush it against the stranger's collar. Even so, he's immediately filled with unease; not because he just punched a stranger, but because he killed something that they were meant to help...flourish.

Back home, they had a name for these kinds of animals and they were placed on a protective list.]

[ Cheryl donates blood because it's easy money, and she has excellent veins. she goes early in the day and lucks out with someone who knows how to use a needle. they offer her more money to stay and draw blood. she has no experience, but she's also not an idiot and decides she can figure it out.

she's determined to not need the knife. how hard can this be? ]

Put you arm there. [ Cheryl's tone says she knows what she's doing - it's confidence with an edge of stern. she has an intensity in her gaze that's a little unsettling. better to not focus on that too much. ] You can close your eyes if you're scared.

[He flashes a smile, all teeth, as he unbuttons his suit jacket. Cufflinks follow, removed and then slipped into a trouser pocket before finally he finally rolls up the sleeve of his shirt. He places his arm down as ordered, the stark whiteness of his skin at least making the cool blue of his veins that much more visible. An easy target, and all that.]

Now, don't you become alarmed when you slide that needle in and the site of entry begins to smoke. Just pretend nothing is happening, and draw the blood.

[ Murkwell Hollow is more than just lackluster in appearance but Crowley wasn't going to complain, at least not in the perspective department. The trip here is where his companion probably heard the most from him and despite his laziness it's apparent that the trek up didn't do a number on his stamina. It seems that the worst of it has passed and now all that is left is to do their job, which may or may not be a chore in itself.

In fact, it definitely is.

Confidence is but one of vampires many downfalls, and Crowley is a person with an overwhelming amount thanks to over eight hundred years of living. While he's well aware of the consequences there's still no mask present on his face, and hell he may not even paying any attention to who's with him and spraying the aphrodisiac without a care in the world. Did you get hit by those positive vibes? He probably did, too, and if so it'll be a trip. It's only a mess, but the choice is yours on which mess you stumble in. ]

ii. cinjaw

[ He's adventured inside a virtual farm with goats but admittedly he hated every passing second of that experience. These animals appear more lax and willing to cooperate in comparison to the smaller animals who wanted to buck at his shins, and in the middle of his appreciation is where the lethargic nature of these creatures hits him hardest.

Vampires typically sleep in coffins back in his world but that bundle of hay sure looks comfortable enough. He's fine in the sun so a few hours of sleep shouldn't be too much trouble; relaxing slowly, he's reminded of a past life before he knocks out. ]

iii. help a neighbor

[ SPEAKING OF GOATS. Apparently someone in the area has a group of kids and one of them happened to have wandered off in the middle of the night, and as much as Crowley wanted to reject the request it's difficult when you're the proclaimed "Kid Magnet" because every baby goat within a mile radius wants to bruise your shins. He's not very happy, to say the least, and it's evident in the way he works.

Unfortunately you're accompanying him and when he calls for your attention what's in his hands isn't a goat but a chicken. That same chicken that someone was probably meant to be walking... it's even got a leash... and before you can ask what the hell's going on he's quick to answer: ] I couldn't find a goat.

[ Another great thing about being a vampire is being able to notice the change of pace in a person's heart. It was easy to indicate when they were excited, panicked, or at least causing their heart to race by exercising, but when you're seated and supposed to relax it's easy to indicate whether or not a person is happy to be here. ]

[Whilst he's not the kind of individual given over to acts of altruism, he is partial to distraction-- this place with all it's alien strangeness, it still gets to him, still slides uncomfortably beneath his skin and leaves him feeling shaken, sick. His head is a mire, a black hole of unsettled feeling, and pacing and wandering and skulking at night at the very least wears down the sharp edge. Keeps him busy.

And if he's up and about already, why not accept when someone requests some assistance? He may only have a vague idea of what a goat is supposed to look like, but there are two of them searching, and so that really oughtn't be a problem. Besides, a rogue animal wandering about on its own should be easy enough to spot, shouldn't it?

Only, when the person who's been roped into this with him calls him over, he has enough sense to realise that the thing he's holding is not a goat before the words come out of the other refugee's mouth.]

I. THE BIRDS AND THE BEES.

[ If he had stayed completely on task, this probably wouldn't have been an issue, but the moment Prompto catches sight of those colorful critters, he whips out his camera to take a picture of them. Unfortunately, this unwitting mistake has a high price, as one of the sephts darts towards him and swipes the camera before he even has a chance to adjust the focus. So, that's not...great.

He's after them like a bolt, then, because oh no, there is no way he's letting them get away with his camera. No sir. Not losing sight of the one who took his most prized possession is his only focus, so that means he might bump into someone as he runs. He'll belt a hasty "sorry!" at anyone he happens to do that to, but barring someone full-on clotheslining him, he's not stopping until the sepht land at its home sweet home. Which, of course, has to be high up one of the tallest trees in the area.

Undeterred, he scales the tree, branch by branch, until he's at the sepht's little den in a hollow. Elbow deep in the small opening, he fishes around for his camera, but it's evidently not as easy as one might think to just grab it and go. ]

You know - ow - if you didn't want your picture taken - stop - you could have just asked!

[ So yeah, the camera recovery effort is going well. ]

II. BLOOD BANK.

[ This seemed like a good idea at the time. A quick way to earn some cash and do some good for the community? Count him in! And it's just a little prick. He's had way worse than that. How bad can it be?

At least, this is what he tells himself to get his butt in the chair before he can chicken out. It's fine. This is fine. He isn't regretting this decision at all.

[ this is ridiculous. oh, how the mighty have indeed fallen. there's nothing prim or proper about going out tracking down species of weird creatures. but here he is. money is money and while he's never been averse to the outdoors - bouldering, cycling, and really, if he hadn't been an orphan he probably would have been a boy scout too - it's just this whole thing seems preposterous. why do they need bugs. why are people paying for this?

in murkhow hollow, he's having the absolute worst time. it's hot, it smells putrid, and he can't help but feel like his skin is crawling. he should have opted to look somewhere else. the motif of death doesn't bother him as much as the visceral reactions he's getting from the stench. he's going to kind of be poking things with sticks here. please comment on his poor technique. ]

[ the ruins he's a bit more on his game. there's an elegant grace to the way he's stalking around, trying to figure out where the antisocial creatures are hiding. it doesn't take a genius to figure out the proper way to trap them, but actually doing it is an entirely different matter. he's about ready to catch one when (your) footsteps cause the love bug to go back into hiding. god damnit - ]

[ he can't make this up. not even in the strangest of novels did he ever read about someone wanting a chicken to be walked. yet here he is, with the god damn fluffy squawking machine on a leash. he had simply gone over to the house to ask for directions to the ruins, and the next thing he knew, a leash was shoved in his hands, the person winking at him, and telling him that the chicken enjoyed being held.

... like hell was he going to hold it.

[ Okay, so Akechi is walking a chicken, but at least he isn't walking a bunny. Which is what Prompto is currently doing. Not that he looks one bit embarrassed about this. In fact, he looks like he's having the time of his life, cooing down at the bunny when it stops to sniff things on the street. Man, if he hadn't already adopted a dog, he would have to seriously consider one of these cute little guys as a pet.

Crossing the chicken-walker's path gives him pause, however, as he scrutinizes the creature at the end of the leash. It's sort of like a baby chocobo, but not anywhere as cute or fluffy...but it brings to mind a hilarious and timeless joke that transcends universes. ]

[ Living with the Eagles and other Talking Birds in Narnia have taught Edmund what to do when there's a predatory anything with wings swooping down his direction, so he's a little more prepared when the flying marsupials went for his belongings, particularly his sword. He managed to keep most things by his side (and whatever trinket he lost to another isn't worth the efforts of a chase), and he starts off in a run.

Either you've been with him the whole time, or he's passing by you as he runs straight down, but either way he doesn't quite stop. Although he does yell, ] Hurry!

[ It's not that hard to find the herd of Cinjaws when they're all that the local farmers have been talking about these days. They were all too happy to point Edmund to the right direction as well, and he ends up at one of the biggest farms, where the herd is — as expected — going about their day lazily. Edmund approaches closest one to him at the moment, stroking its long neck and getting a short grunt of approval in return.

Edmund smiles, ] There must be nothing better for you to do today, is there? We might just change that.

It'd be best of you to come closer to the herd, yes? [ The Cinjaw sighs, kicking its hoof ones or twice, but there's nothing there. Just a lack of desire to do anything. Well, no matter, the aphrodisiac has a wide enough range, and strong enough to reach its intended (and probably unintended) targets. Edmund takes a step back to start setting things up, when something — movement, sound, or just a blink of an image — catches his attention.

Soon, he finds a person, you, napping in the hay, surrounded by a few Cinjaws. He's heard of their inclination to make others feel just as lethargic as they do, and now he's seeing it in action. Before thinking the better of it, Edmund goes up to you and shakes you awake. ]

[ She's used to doing odd jobs for money-- it was the way Fairy Tail functioned, and it looks like its the way her life functions now. But.. her old work was definitely more productive, a little. Different. ]

[ Laundry. Once she resigned herself to washing clothes, it was easy to start using her water. Simply making the temperature a little warmer, with some soap thrown in, made the job easy. Not how she wanted to spend her day, but someone in her home has to make the money. At least her neighbor provided some lunch, even the offer of a handmade shirt for the trouble of it all. ]

doing it by hand? a different matter altogether. having to use soap instead of a laundry detergent is... baffling, to say the least, let alone humbling. Akira isn't one to complain, however, which is why he was happy to oblige in locating where the soap was hiding and fetching it for his "co-worker". if they wanted to call each other that. ]

[ In the early days of the war, Peggy's training in espionage took her to Scotland. The rough terrain and remote location made it an ideal place to prepare field agents for the real thing — parachuting behind enemy lines with nothing else but your wits and whatever you could safely carry. She won't confirm or deny any rumours that might float around about what all that training entailed, although if someone were to guess at operatives being driven out to the middle of nowhere (blindfolded) and being told to find their way back to headquarters... Well, what an imagination you have on you, eh?

All this to say that Agent Peggy Carter is just as comfortable in the country as she is in a city. So when the opportunity to explore arises, sanctioned by established individuals in Olympia no less, she doesn't turn it down. And as friendly as the locals are, as easy as it might be for her to blend in, being armed with a legitimate reason to be traipsing beyond the city limits is nothing to sneeze at. Besides which, now that they're all settled without having to struggle through woods teeming with dangerous creatures, it might be nice to take a more leisurely look around.

Well, leisurely, but with purpose. No use forgetting why she's out here. (Enticing the native wildlife to mate. Put that down in the books as one of the more unusual assignments she's embarked on.) Perhaps she's knocked on a friend's door and invited them along; perhaps she's run into someone on the way, or out in the field. Perhaps she's wandering the Ruins alone, or in the Hollow with a few Xlarix buzzing around her, or she may be taking a rest from all that hiking on a comfortable boulder, jotting down notes of what she's seen before heading back into the city for the day. ]

Well, it could anyway, before it somehow managed to take a tumble down a well.

Near the dilapidated ruins of a long-abandoned hut, Mercy had tried to corral the sepht inside, but it had been wise enough to not risk going inside. It had struck to the walls, then taken cover, then scrambled onto the well's rim and got ready to flee the skies, when she'd reached for it, and it had lost its balance in surprise and fright and fallen. Now, she's leaning over with barely her feet kept on the ground, peering into the gloom to try and locate the poor mewling little thing. )

Once you’re in, you can see he maybe wasn’t super exaggerating. It’s a mess. There’s an obscene amount of wooden ducks (anything over 10 duck-themed tchotchkes in one household is the sign of a clearly unstable mind), scattered bits of furniture both completed and half-made, cooking equipment, shoes, just. Everywhere. And how does one elf collect that many glittery capes in the, what, matter of short weeks they’ve been here. An ominously glowing sword leans against the mantle precariously, and Taako waves a hand at it.]

[ An extremely nonchalant death threat, for sure. Taako just sort of gestures to the whole thing. ]

Sure, the bickering all the way here was sorta fun, and listening to Taako and Dorian alternately whine about walking I’m sure was greatly entertaining, but the current scene is a bit of a mess. To Taako’s credit, he’s holding on pretty valiantly to the end of the Umbra Staff for the time being, but it’s obvious this is turning into a losing battle with a Sepht.]

[ It's a pleasant day, which is payment enough, except that it's not any kind of payment at all. Still, if he does this right it'll be fifty clams, which is payment. If Bucky's not thrilled playing errand boy wonder, it's honest work, and he's no stranger to gas masks and chemical weapons, even if the circumstance is a world removed from what he's used to.

In fact, he's just about to put his mask on, when he sees someone sleeping in the grass. He nudges the poor Charlie with his toe. ]
