It isn’t easy starting life in a new place. It quickly becomes apparent that you are in dire need of two very important things: money and a good name. In addition to full-time jobs, certain people in Olympia will reward handsomely for helping them with tasks. Submit any AC eligible thread of participating in this log's prompts for One (1) Olympia REP point HERE. Threads involving your flora/fauna submission may also be submitted, even if your submission is not made official game canon.

FOR THE RECORD

It’s time to put on your hiking shoes. Characters will be approached by both Evras and Lysa at separate times. Both individuals are interested in recording species of plants and animals-- El Nysa is bursting with all sorts of life, after all! It is impossible to chronicle all of it without help. You will be provided with a journal to chronicle your findings. Each submission pays 100 silver.

OOC: We need YOUR help in worldbuilding the area in and around Olympia and The Outlook! Create a creature or plant and submit it HERE by August 31st at 11:59 PM EST. ONE entry per character only. NOTE: If you have accepted a job at The Sanctuary or Simwe Institute, you MUST submit your entry to your boss to maintain your position. You may assume a character got the job if they established contact, even if an official offer hasn't been extended yet. Although an entry will net you TWO (2) Olympia REP points no matter what, we will be choosing a maximum of 20 entries to include in the official bestiary for future encounters.

THE BIRDS AND THE BEES

Along with the request to record traits of a certain specimen, Evras and Lysa independently ask for more quick favors. Certain species, due to their unique natures, aren’t as prone to procreating as one would hope. They need your help. The directions for these requests, provided by Evras or Lysa, are simple. You will be provided a small amount of heavy aphrodisiacs (and a mask) to spray in a particular region. Because the natural aphrodisiacs of the island run a bit thin there, the wildlife has been less... willing to comply. Each species you help will net you 50 silver. Three species in particular are in need of a little help.

Note: There will be a mask provided. Forgetting it may mean you start to feel some of the effects yourself. You may also be immune. Please put appropriate warnings in threads if applicable.

Xlarix, also commonly referred to as the love bug. Found in MURKWELL HOLLOW.

They have an ability to release literal positive energy, making those exposed to it more willing to be friendly and jovial with another. Even the most heated rivals can easily become the closest companions. You may even be tempted to temporarily abandon the request and do something fun with your new best friend. Unfortunately, while many have desired to use its effects in diplomacy, its effects only last a few minutes at best.

Despite their powers to assist others in bridging emotional gaps, they are vicious insects. During mating, they engage in battle, normally losing the lives of both parties before their spawn is even properly produced. This is why they need a little help. Try to break up the fights as much as you can. For the Xlarix, being in each other's presence for long enough will eventually get them to calm down and continue the process. You may get unlucky in the process and end up with an extremely painful sting that requires healing, however. The pain increases with time, and if you allow it to go untreated for more than a day, it will be excruciating, enough that it may be debilitating, for 12 hours before eventually healing on its own.

Sepht, found in EDRATHE RUINS: Both shy and antisocial, it’s no wonder these little marsupials don’t have much luck in the mating department. They prefer to live in isolation, and are much more concerned with hoarding everything they can get their hands on. This includes stealing anything you may have brought with you. As a warning, they are incredibly strong. They can also fly, so good luck catching them after they’ve made off with your stuff. Let’s hope you can get back that magical sword or enchanted necklace of yours.

Once you have sprayed the chemical in their habitat, do not stick around the area. Despite being more suggestible to mate now, they are shy to the core, and will not come out of hiding until they are sure the coast is clear.

Cinjaw, found JUST OUTSIDE OLYMPIA. Domestic animals kept by local farmers in the outskirts of Olympia. These guys are just really, really lazy. Too lazy to care about things like passing on their genes. Honestly, if it weren’t for the efforts of humans and the fact that their meat is too delicious for the Olympians to allow these creatures to go extinct, they would have been wiped out years ago.

Stay too long near the herd, and you will begin to feel extremely lethargic yourself. Nothing sounds better than using the person next to you as a pillow for your nap, or dropping everything you’re doing to go sleep in that hay. Hopefully someone finds you and is kind enough to wake you up. After spraying the aphrodisiac, you won’t want to stick around. They are loud: loud enough to damage hearing without proper ear protection (Now you know why those farmers walk around with ear plugs).

HELP A NEIGHBOR

Being new is tough in any given neighborhood. This is especially the case when you’re a newly arrived refugee. Though you’ve been welcomed here, you haven’t established a lot of trust in the community. Your neighbors don’t know a single thing about you, and that name tag fiasco doesn’t count.

Fortunately for all of you, the rule of this game is simple. There is no monetary payment, but isn't it priceless to feel good about being a good samaritan?

Make yourself helpful. Did you neighbor mention wanting to take their pet chicken out on a walk? Offer to do it for them and they may pay you back in a meal or a small gift. Did one of them mention needing help with rearranging their collection of thousands of cat figurines? Well, who better than to ask but you! You over there, why not help your fellow refugee by doing this task together? It never hurt to do some teamwork. Or maybe your roommate is the one taking that chicken out on a walk, and you’re just ready to judge. Complete judgment. But hey, that’s fair.

BLOOD BANK

CW: Needles, Blood

One of the things that quickly becomes apparent about life in Olympia is that all citizens are welcome, including those who may possess unique dietary requirements. The Blood Bank is an institution that has stood proudly for many years, and in addition to providing meals for some of its citizens, the supply is invaluable for care in The Sanctuary, research in Simwe Institute, and for use in certain types of magic.

They're offering you a special today, for your blood in particular! You just look so... healthy and able-bodied. Donate a few pints, and you'll earn an easy 200 silver. Unfortunately, the center is so busy today that they've had to call on volunteers, and depending on who you've met so far, your particular volunteer may look familiar. It's... another refugee. Wait, are they even qualified?! How did they even get roped into this?!

Qualified or not, the job pays well for both the refugees donating, and the ones drawing the blood (much more for whoever's donating, though. Fair is fair.). A blood drawing set inclusive of clean needles, antiseptic swabs and a blood storage kit, will be provided. Sticking a needle into a vein isn't as easy as those people in the Sanctuary make it seem, though. You may not always get it the first time, so try, try again!

And if you still can't hit the bulls-eye? A rogue-looking Olympian "volunteer" approaches and hands you a knife. Apparently, cutting right into the vein and collecting the blood in a saucer also works; the staff would only need to sterilize the blood with a spell afterward. And about the gaping wound you'd cause? They always have healing potions on hand for when things go wrong (but just like the potions from before, they have been known to cause some nausea).

You'll do anything to help your fellow Olympian, right?

The results of The Birds and the Bees will be submitted to whoever you submit a flora/fauna entry to. If you do not submit a flora/fauna entry, submission to either one may be handwaved.

[ they could probably get a vehicle, but that would cost money... and they're going out to survey the wildlife anyway. ]

Though perhaps I should prepare some supplies.

[ for a day trip they need some food, don't they? hm, well, he can always make something with what they find on the road, but that's not quite the same... dilemmas. ]

[ Speaking of supplies, Mikazuki is digging around beneath his robe-slash- poncho until he produces a handful of something that honestly looks like trail mix from one of his pockets. He pops it into his mouth thoughtfully.

He's... good? ]

I can wait.

[ Shifting on his feet, he looks off at the surrounding area. ]

If they'd just give me Barbatos, it wouldn't take as long.

Hm? If you're prepared, then it doesn't matter.

[ it's not like archer needs to eat... so without another glance, he'll start on his way towards the city gates.

though that last bit catches his attention. ]

Barbatos...? [ he assumes he's not talking about one of solomon's demon pillars but... who even knows anymore. ]

Yeah, I'm fine.

[ Prepared as he'll ever be, so he steps after him, leaving the bustling outskirts of Olympia behind. Even with short legs, he has a brisk pace. Enough to keep up without a problem, anyway.

Nodding, he throws some more snack food in his mouth, chewing until they're out of earshot from the locals. ]

Did you go to the hangar when we were still on the moon?

There wasn't much that interested me there.

[ he'd explored most of the station just out of boredom, but vehicles have never really been his passion.

while archer figured he might need to slow his strides a bit, he's pleasantly surprised as he realizes that's unnecessary. ]

I take it you're... some sort of pilot, then?

[ Fair enough. It seemed like just going to the hangar back then was enough to get crammed into one of their mass production suits, so he can see why someone without an interest might want to avoid getting shucked out into space on short notice.

Mikazuki nods, making an affirmative noise. ]

That's right. Barbatos is one of the mobile suits up there.

And you wish it was down here, instead. That would make things simpler.

[ admittedly, while giant robots aren't his thing, actually seeing one in action would be another matter entirely. ]

I imagine it would cause quite the ruckus though.

[ Simpler. Mikazuki would have thought so instantly, had this been his world. Had this been another time or place where he couldn't actually walk anywhere on his own. So it garners a pause from him as he looks at the ground in front of him, one foot pacing in front of the other. ]

Something like that. It doesn't seem like people down here are used to machines. Only stuff like [ what was it... ] magic.

That's true. The technology here isn't too primitive, but a giant robot would likely take most by surprise. [ ...that would actually be kind of entertaining, but never mind. ]

I take it you don't have "magic" where you come from?

That's why we were told not to talk about where we came from, right?

[ Even in places where a giant robot wouldn't be that odd a sight, Mikazuki has a penchant for causing a ruckus regardless. ]

And no. Nothing like it at all.

[ Being healed like it was nothing after crash landing was something else. ]

Magic is nothing all that impressive, once the initial shock of seeing it wears off. They say that magic is indistinguishable from technology, once the latter becomes advanced enough... I'm not sure that's really true, but the sentiment isn't wrong.

[ and since he's never made any effort to hide that he's a mage since coming here, archer just stops for a moment to concentrate. greenish energy seems to pulse around his arm, before concentrating and forming into a sword. ]

Useful for tricks like this, but not much else.

[ Mikazuki gets a couple steps ahead before he slows to a stop, realizing what's going on. A glance over his shoulder yields light, a palpable shift in the air around him as the sword manifests. Stilling, he pivots back around to get a better look. ]

Huh. [ Interesting. ] So there are people who think those things are the same?

[ Not something he thinks he can envision just yet, but he doesn't mind accepting the possibility. ]

Can you fight with it?

The principles are similar, but the means and methods are different. Though I can only speak of the magic I know... since coming here, I've encountered people with abilities I've never seen before.

[ he's been meaning to look into that further, but so many other things to do. ]

This? [ he glances at the sword in his hand, weighing it a bit before tossing it in mika's direction. for all intents and purposes, its a normal, regularly functioning sword. ] Well enough. It depends more on the wielder than anything else.

[ Mikazuki didn't expect to have a sword thrown at him today, but all things considered, he takes it in stride by catching it. He turns the blade in his hands, letting it sit vertically before it tips into an arc as a test of balance. ]

Swords can be difficult to use. [ Even after he'd learned ("learned") how to use one anyway. ] But a weapon is a weapon.

[ Usually a necessity sort of situation. He's still marveling at it feeling so real for just appearing out of thin air. ]

If you're saying that, it must means there's a lot of different types of magic.

[ it was more a test than anything else... if it had appeared he wouldn't catch it, archer could just de-materialize it easily enough. but once he does, the kid actually seems to know how to handle it.

that's interesting. ]

Easy to use, difficult to use well. [ all things considered, mikazuki's reaction to the spectacle is pretty even keeled. ] In my world alone, there were more types than I could probably count.

And here there appear to be even more.

[ Not something he'd argue with. Mikazuki nods, glancing up. ]

Weapons that crush are better for me, I think.

[ Heavy, broad, unforgiving things. ]

This is offensive magic then.

[ Sounding it out in time with pitching the weapon around like he'd be using it as a baseball bat rather than a sword, Mikazuki turns to start walking again. ]

When we dropped in, there was someone who could heal wounds like it was nothing.

A blunt weapon? An... interesting choice.

[ a weapon that relies on weight is an odd choice for someone with such a small frame, but perhaps he's good at generating momentum.

either way, they're just out here to survey wildlife... there's no reason why such things should be necessary. ]

I've encountered people like that as well. Healing is... difficult, where I come from. But here there are some capable of feats I wouldn't have imagined with almost no effort at all.

[ A short nod. ]

Like maces.

[ Though he's never actually used one "himself", sometimes the grip of the machine became indistinguishable from his own. He doesn't think to clarify. Eventually he lowers the blade as the road opens up into the valley leading towards Edrathe, finding that the scenery is just as compelling. ]

Feats? Like what?

I'll keep that in mind.

[ swords are definitely archer's specialty, but projecting a mace wouldn't really be much different. still, it seems like the boy's mostly gotten used to holding the sword, so no reason to change that now. ]

Healing injuries that normally would kill in mere moments. [ the injuries were his own, and they wouldn't have actually killed him... but a normal person, definitely. ] A power that saves lives rather than taking them... I'll admit, I'm a little jealous.

[ Giving a short hum, he can't deny that a power like that was really amazing to think about, let alone see. How many could be saved with something as simple as an innate ability? If he thought it'd do him any good to think about, he'd apply it to any number of situations at home.

But when he looks aside, he has something different to say: ]

That's strange to be jealous over.

[ Envy itself is a nonentity to him, but he can at least imagine it enough to say so. ]

Is it?

[ archer's a bit surprised by the frank reply, though... part him recognizes he has a point. it was really less jealousy and more admiration for an ability that more directly helps others than his own, with a touch of self-deprecation. ]

I suppose you're correct. When I was younger, I never had a talent for such things. Perhaps some lingering resentment remains.

That's not all bad.

[ Not being able to do something, even if the willingness or drive was there. Even complacency and acceptance seem to occupy different spaces in how he looks at things. ]

But I guess it depends on why you'd kill in the first place too.

That's a rather difficult question.

[ he could volunteer his own answer, but he doesn't think it's a particularly good one. no, if anything it's worthy of nothing but derision. he's never really established that this boy has taken lives, but archer has no doubt that he has. ]

And you? How would you answer that?

[ Someone accused him of it once, enjoying the killing of men. He'd never figured out what that accusation meant to him. There just wasn't time.

There a lot of platitudes about it — everyone with a weapon being equal, each side doing what they can. In the the end, Mikazuki realized that none of those were really true at all. Maybe Tekkadan would exist still, if it was. ]

Taking lives protects the lives that are important to you.

[ When it's all he knows, there is no other context but a battlefield. ]

[ it's not that he doesn't understand that answer; on the contrary, he understands it all too well. he had lived by those words, taken them to their logical extreme. killing others, no matter how many, in order to protect people. but in the end, what does that achieve? how many lives need to be taken before it becomes too much? ]

And if it never ends? If you must kill hundreds... thousands, to protect those lives? Would you?

[ he's fairly certain the knows the answer already... if anyone were to ask him that, he wouldn't hesitate. but still... he takes no joy in that knowledge either. ]
