A. The Sanctuary

[Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Fraser and Dr. Watson, Venom's expanded his knowledge on anatomy, first aid, and some level of bedside manner. He furthered his training through field work, reading books, studying potions and salves to an extent, and finally learning his first healing spells. He'd come a long way from being an assassin and knowing only how to treat the most fleeting of wounds. It's almost like he's a proper healer now, hence his decision to change jobs.

Meaning it's time for him to step out of the shadows.

He went through hell and back trying to do the same for the Guild, but to do it for himself is weird. Though he had planned on telling 2cave that he was going to protect the town before the storm hit. Maybe he's taking the steps to do that in his new home. Or maybe he's just overthinking everything again as he's organizing books and herbs for the more experienced healers.

For those who know Venom, his hair's tied back, save for his bangs.]

Pardon me, but I'm rather new here. Would these dried petals go with the dried herbs or elsewhere?

B. Tea Break - somewhere outside

[Between organizing and restocking supplies, Venom catches a breather. He'll be outside by a large tree, having the tea he packed along with a light lunch of fruit and cheeses. And by light he means a healthy wedge of the Olympian equivalent to brie. Maybe if someone drops by he'll share it with them!]

C. Wildcard

[Dealer's choice here! Maybe spot him helping with cleaning, or possibly lending a hand in the kitchen. Anything to help him prove his worth at his new job.]

[They're probably caused by what he endured as a hostage. The young ex-assassin scoots over and offers the now-empty spot to Miles.]

I can ask one of my superiors to mix you something that can help you sleep. There's this one particular plant we use that works wonders.

[Pess's tail wagging happily as he was paid attention to. His small frame wiggling happily.]

Unfortunately so. I seem to get a few hours of sleep at a time these days and even that is shallow.

[He sat down next to him, stretching his legs out in front of him.]

That sounds lovely. Let me know how much I owe you for it.

[Being an alert sleeper has always been part of Venom's life because of his old job. He hopes he can help Miles sleep better. But first he looks at Pess.]

Is it all right if I pick him up?

[Venom vs animals as he continues to pet the excited dog.]

It shouldn't be too expensive for a month's supply. And we can probably sign you up for a prescription if it works out.

Certainly, Just be gentle. Poms tend to be a really fragile breed. Would you like that Pess?

[Pess gave an enthusiastic bark, running about in a small circle around his legs.]

Thank you, I would greatly appreciate that. I haven't been able to focus that much because of it.

How are you enjoying the new job so far?

[As long as the puppy's okay with it. Venom leans in and picks the enthusiastic dog up gently, letting him settle in his lap. Pess is so fluffy and happy that Venom can't help giving him all the pets and attention.]

It's rather relaxing. I work at my own pace and I learn about our various potions and ingredients. The people here are very kind, as well.

Once I'm finished with my break, I'll inquire about our sleeping medication options.

[The puppy loves the attention. As soon as he is on his lap he circles around in a writhing mess and attempts to lick any bit of exposed flesh he can find.]

That is wonderful to hear. I am really happy you are accommodating to such a thing well. I know the transition to it has been hard but I'm happy that you are making the steps to make your new goals a reality.

[How can a dog be this adorable? Venom scritches under the chin as he makes sure the pom is comfortable in his lap. Too bad Pepper is so small. Otherwise he'd be more willing to bring the tiny monkey out more often.]

Had I been told that healing would be my new job in the future, I would have probably laughed it off. It just feels so surreal at times.

[He looks down at Pess, who is trying to give him kisses on his hands and arms.]

Can I ask you something, Miles? Something more personal?

[Pess was born adorable. The little fluttery cravat attached to his collar sure did help though. He settled down on his lap.]

Yes, I can understand that feeling. I never thought there would be a time I wasn't an attorney, but here we are.

[He paused, at the mention of a personal question. He had an inkling of what it may be about, but didn't say anything at first.]

...Certainly. What is it?

[Venom's thankful that Pess is sort of distracting him from the awkwardness of the question he's about to ask.]

You encouraged me to speak to Phoenix, yet you harbor feelings for him as well. Why?

[It's true that Venom could have easily let Miles die so he could have Phoenix to himself. But wouldn't be able to live with himself. He wasn't the grudge-holding teenage leader anymore. Still, it made little sense to him that Miles would allow this.]

[And there it was, the crux of the matter. He had a feeling it had to do with Phoenix. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes, and gathered his thoughts.]

Well, regardless of what I feel, what transpired between you and Phoenix, is between the two of you. I think it is not right for one party to go ahead and make a decision that involves the other without a mutual agreement. I've made that mistake once upon a time and all it did was hurt the other party.

If you and Phoenix decided to continue your relationship it is entirely up to the two of you. If not, then you'd both at least have closure.

Quite frankly I'm much too old to have a romantic rivalry as if I were some sort of teenager. It is up to Phoenix to decide how he feels, I've spoken my Truth already, why should I press him further? Moreover, why would I try to sabotage you? I respect you. And that sort of thing goes strictly against my Creed.

Either he feels that way towards me or he doesn't. I'll have to live with the outcome, regardless.

[At the end of anything, pragmatism won out with Miles.]

[That has to be one of the most eloquent and direct things Venom's heard in his entire life. Venom's had to live with the outcome of Lord Zato choosing Millia once more, even when she'd betrayed him. All this wouldn't have hurt so much had he not experienced it before.

But that's still a very kind and logical way of thinking.]

The reason why I ask is because it isn't the first time I've come between two people. Hence why I stepped back.

[Direct was certainly Miles' style. His brows furrowed and he leaned back a bit. It made sense as to why he had acted in that way.]

I can understand why such a thing would be painful, especially if you had felt that you were in a similar situation before. And that the initial impulse would be to shield yourself from the pain.

We want to shield ourselves from getting hurt again. But in doing such, we prevent ourselves from experiencing things that are new and growing from it.

[He was speaking from experience. It was hard to open up to stem the urge to run. But the braver thing is always to face it.]

However, the important thing to take away is that we are different people and that even if the situation feels similar, it isn't the same. We can't control our situation but we can control how we respond to it.

Either way, I would like to maintain a friendship with you, if you are willing.

You... would?

[He's surprised by the revelation, considering how much he messed up everything for Miles and Phoenix by his existence. But it's clear he still needs guidance after all this time.

He takes in the discussion makes mental notes as he's going to need them very soon.]

I... if that's what you want, Miles. I'd like to remain your friend, as well.

Of course. I'm gladdened to hear that.

We have so few allies in this place. All of us refugees I mean. We lost everything, our homes our loved ones, everything. Discontinuing a friendship over something like this, in the objective sense seems trivial.

My time as a hostage taught me that if anything...

That all we have here is one another, other refugees. We have too many things stacked against us.

If I'm going to continue fighting I want to have people I can trust by my side.

[Trust is one thing Venom hasn't quite learned. He has people he considers friends, but trust is still hard. Yet Miles's words hold a lot of weight, and so far he's given the former assassin little reason not to trust him.

There is a bit of silence before Venom starts speaking again.]

I would have respected your decision either way. But I will fight alongside you as an ally, and as a friend.
