[ He settles back in his chair. ]
Giving into the path you were set on as a child? That would be bitterly ironic - free will being preserved by a woman with none of her own. Doesn't seem quite right.

she doesn't hate him anymore. now, in some fucked-up way, she wants to make him proud. to prove that she's the better daughter. (aneela and her are two sides of the same coin, two wolves. those were aneela's words when she made dutch, weren't they? their dna's identical but mirrored.) ]
Don't worry. I wasn't doing it alone.

[ Dutch's glass of whiskey is topped off. ]

You don't know any of them. Except maybe Johnny. Did you know Johnny?

I met him, yes.

[ for a moment, her tone is soft. fond, nostalgic. then it tips into bitterness. ] He was fighting because he's too bloody good for his own good.
[ johnny's been dutch moral's compass ever since she met him. ]

He's gone, you know.
[ not an answer. very much one at the same time. ]

[ He smooths down his moustache. ]
Hence your remarkable unhappiness.

[ that's laughable. ] I'm angry. [ she is. she's trying hard to be. ]

Don't mean to offend. [ Then, lowering them again: ] Why is it better to be angry than to be sad?

[ she doesn't tip to the side, though she almost wants to. after a moment, she admits: ] Anger hurts less.

[ He ignores the first comment; he can tell she's on the verge of too-drunk-to-talk. ]
Or at least it just hurts others. [ He turns his head very slightly to the side. ] So is he back in stasis?
no subject
[ the word is sharp, and an answer to both his comment and his question. if it's a question of being hurt or hurting, dutch will almost always choose the latter. ]

How do you think?

Drink is only a delaying tactic, though. A wonderful one, but...

I don't do that anymore. Killing people. [ unless it's self-defence. or necessary. or they're hullen. or all of the above. but she tries. ]

A mercenary who avoids dealing death? It does sound like something out of a fairy-tale.
