A. The Sanctuary

[Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Fraser and Dr. Watson, Venom's expanded his knowledge on anatomy, first aid, and some level of bedside manner. He furthered his training through field work, reading books, studying potions and salves to an extent, and finally learning his first healing spells. He'd come a long way from being an assassin and knowing only how to treat the most fleeting of wounds. It's almost like he's a proper healer now, hence his decision to change jobs.

Meaning it's time for him to step out of the shadows.

He went through hell and back trying to do the same for the Guild, but to do it for himself is weird. Though he had planned on telling 2cave that he was going to protect the town before the storm hit. Maybe he's taking the steps to do that in his new home. Or maybe he's just overthinking everything again as he's organizing books and herbs for the more experienced healers.

For those who know Venom, his hair's tied back, save for his bangs.]

Pardon me, but I'm rather new here. Would these dried petals go with the dried herbs or elsewhere?

B. Tea Break - somewhere outside

[Between organizing and restocking supplies, Venom catches a breather. He'll be outside by a large tree, having the tea he packed along with a light lunch of fruit and cheeses. And by light he means a healthy wedge of the Olympian equivalent to brie. Maybe if someone drops by he'll share it with them!]

[Dealer's choice here! Maybe spot him helping with cleaning, or possibly lending a hand in the kitchen. Anything to help him prove his worth at his new job.]

I admit, we don't use many potions and herbs where I'm from. Magic handled most physical ailments while standard medicine and vaccinations covered illness and disease prevention. So it's good to know I have reassurance and guidance from my fellow workers.

[And he's glad they took him in despite his past.]

[Linneus doesn't so much mind being a Daughter - every time he hears the word he thinks back with fond amusement to his childhood wish to be a Princess, how Xanthe had reacted - "You don't actually want to be a girl, do you?"]

Vaccinations... yes, I have learned about these.

There were some medicines where I came from, but mostly just one or two drugs used for any number of ailments... [basically like morphine and cocaine] ...the rest was salves, teas, tinctures, and a little practicality. So I find myself catching up in a great many areas and asking a lot of questions.

They were a must for those in my old line of work. We dealt with dangerous environments and magics, so I've been inoculated against just about anything one can imagine.

[So many shots... but it was a necessity.]

all these new teas, salves, and potion will definitely be an experience for me. Perhaps we can learn these together and help one another out?

We never had them, where I came from. Immunity--? [this is the right word? He's learning] --was acquired in what I suppose is the old-fashioned way.

[But then, Linneus wasn't often sick, that he recalls. Perhaps that meant he was quite robust? As for injections... Linneus had been just getting on board with the idea and how they worked and actually hadn't been too put-off by the whole procedure, until the previous month.

And the potions... can be used for both good or bad, as he has also learned.]

Well, with teas and salves, I can help. I enjoy it honestly; the making.

The old-fashioned way?

[Linneus could mean letting children play outside and get dirty, though Venom had only read about that in books. Not like he had a childhood to begin with.]

Are the recipes difficult to make? Or does it vary with each type?

[He's just full of questions today.]

I suppose. I'm not sure exactly.

[it just happens? He doesn't really know quite how immunology works...]

Not difficult, no. Some things need to be steeped longer or shorter, or at lower temperatures, or stoppered up in different alcohols. But the basic ideas are the same; it isn't much trouble to adapt.

There's no harm in checking your herbs - it's usually relatively easy to tell based on how they look or feel.

You'll have to share with me your wisdom, because I am no good with herbs outside of cooking.

[He doesn't want to sprinkle too much something that'll completely ruin a good batch of potion.]

[a soft chuckle]

My wisdom...? It's little more than folk remedies - old wives' tales...

[they're still easy enough, though. Venom ruining anything isn't a worry.]

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with either of those.

[Because there are times when his sheltered nature shows through. Are old wives' tales books that are written by older married women?]

They're sort of the same thing, I think, and some work, some don't, and some are just superstitious nonsense.

[not that he hasn't any superstitions of his own, but...]

The herbal remedies I can put more stock in, but one tends to hear a lot of both, growing up around maids and housekeepers.

Oh, I think I understand.

[Sort of false remedies that people claim to work, like Faust's doughnuts.]

That I can agree on. Some of my best tea blends are almost completely herbal, including my energy booster.

[Though he does cheat a little on that one with a dash of his English Breakfast leaves in the mix.]

Some are nonsensical.

[and yet he still believes that getting wet will give one a cold if one doesn't dry off properly...]

Energy booster? [Linneus isn't quite sure what that means beyond the obvious. Of course he knows that black tea has a caffeine content but..] Most people I have known just drink coffee...!

Ah, but I find tea a bit easier for me to consume over coffee. I find coffee rather bitter unless it has a splash of milk. And tea usually gives me more energy.

[Now he misses his tea collection from home.]

Really? I would have imagined you to favour the taste...

[Venom always seemed like a coffee person to him - even though Linneus knows better than to judge on appearances]

I am not much a coffee person myself. I can only manage it quite milky and sweet...

Oh? And what gave you that impression?

[The observation has Venom smiling at his friend, almost like he's vaguely flirting.]

I've always loved tea and creating new blends.

Part of it is intuition - failed intuition, granted. But then where I am from men don't really drink tea...

[...this generalisation brought to you by Linneus' first master. But he smiles a bit at the mention of making blends]

Really? Then we shall have to make something together. It has been a while since I have made a blend that wasn't just for myself...

They are missing out. Where I'm from, men like their tea just as much as coffee or other beverages.

[He used to make them both for Lord Zato, so he knows his coffee well.]

I would love to since I haven't had much of a chance to do so here. I've been buying tea bags after using up the stash that was given to me.

We shall do this, then. It would make a pleasant afternoon.

Well, that isn't wrong. But my first master was loath to be persuaded.

[lightly, taking a moment to straighten up one or two of the shelves and make sure he's happy with the state of the stockroom]

...you had a stash?

I did, yes. I worked with someone who was from my world but he was from the past. He gave me some tea from our country, and I used up the last bags from that stash recently.

[He should ask John again but he hasn't seen the older man recently.]

What kinds of tea do you prefer?

A little of everything - we always had a few different blends, and I made my own often, too.

We could experiment and see if we can make something close to the taste you are used to? Was it a black tea...?

It was black tea, but I'm open to trying just about any kind of tea. A personal favorite back home was my Ceylon blend. Then there was the hibiscus mint herb tea, and rose tea...

Rose tea is lovely. I'm not sure of the others you mentioned - save the black tea, of course - but I wonder if it might be something I'm familiar with just with a different name?

I shall have to try to be sure, of course...!

Of course. I found a few Olympian equivalents to my teas, but not all of them.

I suppose we'll just have to take a day and sample as many as we can.

Olympian tea is good as well, of course. There is a parlour I like, not far off the marketplace...

I believe I know which one you're talking about. I can easily spend all day there despite it being a small shop.

They would probably ask me to leave after trying so many teas.
