RHYS | OTA | sick
He's been in bed for the majority of the day now, but around noon he drags himself out of bed to go be miserable on the couch instead, coughing and sniffing as he tries to make a pot of coffee.
Because coffee solves everything. ]
no subject
[ keeping her eyes fixed on an article, she interjects dryly — ] You know coffee is a dehydrant, don't you?
[ If he still has a headache, it won't help. ]
no subject
And why yes he does have a headache thank you for asking. He's also going to sniffle and cough lightly around a yawn. ]
It's got water in it, it's f-fine.
no subject
I don't think that's how it works.
[ but she sounds more amused than chiding. ]
no subject
[ He'll worry about staying hydrated after he wakes himself up okay Jyn he needs morning...afternoon coffee to live. Like really needs it, even the way he moves is more sluggish than usual, and he can't stop yawning. ]
D'you think this place has actual doctors, or would it be like...apothecaries and potions sh-shops?
no subject
There are actual doctors among the refugees. Mercy — [ she hesitates, wincing. ] — disappeared, but Dr. Watson is still here.
[ The local medicine is even less trustworthy than their fellow refugees, in her opinion. ]
no subject
--Angela's gone?
[ Angela. Not Mercy :'> ]
no subject
Yes. [ Mercy didn't answer her phone, even though she'd promised Jyn lunch. ] She might be back in stasis.
[ no time to check just yet. ]
no subject
[ Rhys runs a hand through his hair, deflating as he leans back against the counter a little. He was supposed to go with Anemone to see her, be supportive he supposes? Anemone isn't a big fan of doctors but apparently needs to get some sort of check-up, and now he's wondering if maybe this is why she hasn't called him to go with her yet--she didn't want to tell him? Or didn't want to deal with it. ]
I've gotta call Anemone.
no subject
She arches her brows. ]
Someone close to Mercy?
no subject
[ Rhys sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, less in frustration and more in fatigue. ]
I don't know if it's good news or bad news for her. Angela was...good though. I think she could've helped. Way more than me at any rate.
no subject
After a long moment, she continues, serious in a different way than her usual aloof demeanor. ]
Dr. Watson's reputable. I know it won't be the same, but — if she needs it, you can still help her.
no subject
[ Rhys takes a mental note. ]
I'll have to check with her before I go and ask but...yeah, that might be a good idea. I'm not really sure what sort of...uh...reason it was that she was going to see Angela.
[ It could have been a girl thing, Jyn.
Although if that were the case Rhys can't imagine why she'd want him there instead of someone else. ]
no subject
Mm. [ Just a hum of acknowledgment. Her tone remains casual.] He may know someone else, if her needs aren't his area of expertise.
[ a beat. ]
Don't push yourself until you're well again, though.
[ not that she's worried!! ]
no subject
I know, I know. I've been resting just like you keep reminding me. You do that a lot for someone who claims not to worry. Almost like a mother hen.
no subject
Do I? [ dryly — ] I don't know what a hen is.
[ jokes!! she's just playing the space weirdo card to dodge this topic :') ]
no subject
[ Rhys wiggles a fork at her with, lo and behold, a piece of cooked chicken stuck to the end of it. But see? Look at him, being sport enough to let her try and wiggle out of admitting she likes him. ]
If you're going to bluff at least pick something that isn't in the same room. Kiiind of gives the whole thing away.
no subject
If it's so obvious, why do you look so smug?
[ he's hardly being clever, then. ]
no subject
Well unlike some people I don't feel a need to hide when I genuinely care about someone's well-being. I'm not shy about it.
[ And Rhys goes on to puff up all proud of himself, like admitting he has feelings is some huge accomplishment
it is though considering how things were back home at Hyperion]no subject
[ She returns her attention back to her paper, though the smile remains. ]
I guess we're even.
[ in the feelings scorecard... ]
no subject
...Guess so.

Abelas had been going about writing or reading per usual, however seeing the curious state of his housemate lead him to staring. The only thing he could think was that Rhys had been distraught and crying over something the entire day. The man could be melodramatic, so it was not beyond the realm of possibility, even if not all the pieces added up.
If Rhys had been so upset over something he expected the other to seek an audience, not shut himself away.]
Has something happened?
no subject
He's classy like that. ]
Huh.....?
no subject
You appear... upset.
no subject
...? I feel pretty awful, yeah. This cold is killing me.
no subject
[He gives the human a very puzzled and somewhat concerned look. Either something was getting horribly lost in translation, or something was very wrong.]
It has not been cold, Rhys.
no subject
[ Abelas surely knows what a cold is ]
no subject
So clearly it's lethal.]
I am... sorry. Is there nothing that can be done to cure it?
no subject
Rhys of course doesn't get the sudden sombre demeanour he takes on, but he shrugs slowly and rubs at one eye around a huffy cough. He's too tired to make a proper deep one, and ultimately it tickles his lungs more than it helps clear them. ]
Soup? Bed rest? I should probably have some oranges or tomatoes or something--for the vitamin C and all that.
no subject
For all of your "advanced society" your people could not come up with a better cure than boiled root vegetables and a nap?
no subject
[ Rhys grumbles and pinches the bridge of his nose, leering through his fatigue. ]
Colds aren't really a big deal. People get them all the time and you just gotta wait them out.
no subject
My understanding was that illness was fatal.
no subject
[ Little does Rhys know, however... :'|
He runs a hand through his head, exhaling. ]
I'm going to be fine. Really.
no subject
Not everyone gets them, shemlen.
[Back to shemlen now that this one isn't dying, and he doesn't have to be nice. At least he used Rhys' name a grand total of once now. Consider it a compliment.]
If you say. I will defer to your judgement on the matter [MISTAKE.] since you would have more experience than I.
no subject
[ No he's still going to be petty about this!! He doesn't go around calling Abelas "elf" okay, he's got the humanitarian high ground here so far is that what you want Abelas? For Rhys to be better at something than you? ]
But yes, I do have a lot experience. [ HE SNIFFS. ] I've had tons of colds before.
no subject
Therefore he is exempt from being nice to them.]
How is it your kind can survive such things many times, yet when my people were afflicted death was almost certain?
[And he is actually asking the question seriously, since Rhys is claiming to have the experience. There was something to be said that he considered the other competent enough to answer.]
no subject
[ Rhys rubs the back of his neck awkwardly because...yeah, that's a pretty heavy topic. He doesn't want to say "humans are better" or anything like that because he's pretty sure that has nothing to do with it. Rhys puts his foot into his own mouth enough already. ]
I guess we're just used to it. We get sick a lot and if we get better we get antibodies and those help us fight off other infections and stuff...? Does that make sense?
[ a pause ]
Do you guys know about that sort of stuff? Bacteria and viruses and vaccines?
no subject
Antibodies?
[The question alone was probably an answer in and of itself, but he continued anyway.]
Why would we? It was never something we had seen until the advent of humans, and it was far easier to simply avoid them than make sense of all their illnesses and plagues.
no subject
He won't lord it over Abelas's head or anything like that, but he'll definitely sound just a little bit incredulous that he somehow isn't aware of all this. ]
It's...yikes, okay. Let's just start with the fact that the stuff that makes you sick are these really tiny organisms that attack your body. Those are viruses and bacteria. When your body fights them off it makes stuff called antibodies which basically make it so that you can never catch that kind of illness again.
Humans have a lot of those, because we get sick a lot. We're sort of used to it? But we also have a ton of different medicines to treat that sort of thing too, and vaccines. Those are basically synthetic antibodies made in a lab so that you don't have to get sick to never catch it again.
no subject
Curious. Such would imply that the Elvhen had a superior defense against such ailments if we had not seen such things in recorded memory, however our vulnerability to them would prove otherwise.
[Of course there was no longer any real way to gauge such things, the empire and its people had long passed. Even if it had not, it was hardly his place to start making inquiries about medical matters.]
It matters little now.
no subject
[ Rhys shrugs in surrender. ]
It probably doesn't matter so much...now. Sorry?
