[ dutch knows where she came from, now, what pieces of her past khlyen has hidden from her for so long. she knows she was pulled from the green.

before finding out that much, she would have been more irritated. now, she's more ruthless. ] You'd lose everything that makes you you. [ her tone isn't sharp, but the words are still pointed. ]

[vorrutyer]

[ And he blinks innocently at her. ]

I'd retain my beautiful eyelashes, wouldn't I?

Sure. [ he's got her there. dutch leans over and punches his upper arm. not hard. ]

[vorrutyer]

[ He rubs it lightly. ]

Rude. So I take it you fought against them. For - individualism, and the human spirit, et cetera.

[motivation]

[ dutch's lips quirk up. ]

I was about to die in a war against them.

[ death, for her, is all but a certainty at this point. if she kills aneela, she'll die, too. if she doesn't kill aneela, aneela will kill her and she'll still die.

but oh, she's not fighting for any reason but to prove something to a dead man. ]

[vorrutyer]

Were you really.

[ He cocks his head to the side. ]

Then...You must feel very mixed feelings about having been brought here. A world destroyed - but the Hullen with it, and you yourself given a second chance at life.

Unless I see everyone here bleed, there's no telling if the Orbiters saved some of the Hullen.

[ she'd thought she was prepared to die. the second chance at life? she's not sure she wants it at the cost of being forgotten. at the cost of never fighting aneela. she doesn't want it if johnny's not here, or d'avin, or even pree.

which is why she's trying to damn hard to stay drunk right now. ]

[ He tilts his head very slightly to the side. ]

So why did you oppose them?

[motivation]

[ her drink is almost empty again. ]

Why the hells do you care?

[vorrutyer]

[ By lifts his fingers in a signal to a waiter without so much as pausing in the flow of the conversation. ]

Why wouldn't I care? You're an interesting woman. And it's an interesting conundrum. What sort of bravery is it that leads someone to resist something easy and advantageous and altogether counter the human spirit...?

[motivation]

[ this is why she likes him. sometimes. when she likes him. (she likes him, and not just because he orders more alcohol at the right moments.) ]

Pretty sure it's what I was trained to do.

[vorrutyer]

Is that really it?

[ He settles back in his chair. ]

Giving into the path you were set on as a child? That would be bitterly ironic - free will being preserved by a woman with none of her own. Doesn't seem quite right.

[motivation]

[ it prompts a laugh from dutch. she'd run away from khlyen thinking her choices would be her own from that moment on, and then she'd found, years later, that khlyen had never truly let her go. she'd tried to kill him and then she'd come to understand him and even after his death (not at her hand but at his own, a sacrifice for her), his influence on her is still great.

she doesn't hate him anymore. now, in some fucked-up way, she wants to make him proud. to prove that she's the better daughter. (aneela and her are two sides of the same coin, two wolves. those were aneela's words when she made dutch, weren't they? their dna's identical but mirrored.) ]

Don't worry. I wasn't doing it alone.

[vorrutyer]

No? Then who else was there?

[ Dutch's glass of whiskey is topped off. ]

[motivation]

[ she promptly takes another sip. her head's swimming a little. ]

You don't know any of them. Except maybe Johnny. Did you know Johnny?

[vorrutyer]

[ Did? By's wine has been untouched for the past few minutes, now that she's clearly drunk enough not to notice that he's not drinking. ]

I met him, yes.

[motivation]

He's there. Was there. His brother bought him a piece of land with robo-goats.

[ for a moment, her tone is soft. fond, nostalgic. then it tips into bitterness. ] He was fighting because he's too bloody good for his own good.

[ johnny's been dutch moral's compass ever since she met him. ]

[vorrutyer]

And so...he inspired you?

[motivation]

[ dutch downs the whiskey in one go, closing her eyes and leaning back. ]

He's gone, you know.

[ not an answer. very much one at the same time. ]

[vorrutyer]

I guessed.

[ He smooths down his moustache. ]

Hence your remarkable unhappiness.

[motivation]

I'm not unhappy.

[ that's laughable. ] I'm angry. [ she is. she's trying hard to be. ]

[vorrutyer]

Heavens. If that's what anger looks like on you, I shudder to imagine what you look like sad.

[motivation]

Shut up.

[vorrutyer]

[ He raises his hands in surrender. ]

Don't mean to offend. [ Then, lowering them again: ] Why is it better to be angry than to be sad?

[motivation]

Is there more whiskey?

[ she doesn't tip to the side, though she almost wants to. after a moment, she admits: ] Anger hurts less.
