1. A BLESSED ENTOURAGE ( closed to

[ every once in a while, it feels like her super power fails her. it's not that she isn't trying to sort out the situation in the group, but getting a feel for it is harder than she anticipated. Bosso's a skilled rambler, and while his wife seems happy to converse with him, she's not much for small talk with the hired guards. any other time and it might be understandable, but the woman who keeps to herself tends to look a little suspicious to someone trying to sort out a traitor.
Emma's noticed the kid, too, and Bosso's explanation of him only makes her more curious. is he angry at Bosso, or upset that he didn't take his advice? could that "bad crowd" have brought him further in than the old man realized?
they've stopped for a break by the time Emma opts to voice her concerns to Diana, and if there's anything that makes this mission a little easier, it's the fact that she's familiar with the woman. she sits down with her, watching Bosso and his wife catch their breath from a few feet away.
she tells herself that nothing could happen from here, but honestly? anything could happen. it always does.] What do you think of all of this?

2. SHOOT LIKE A LADY. ( closed to

[ somehow, the shooting range makes sense to her. it's something Emma knows how to do; something familiar in a world that typically isn't. she's been holding on to the bits and pieces of the life she knew, trying to piece them together in her efforts to start over here. it's not easy, and it's not without its setbacks, but she's trying.
meeting people like Peggy helps, because it reminds her that she's not the only one out of her element. she's sure the woman had her questions at first (since Emma had been less guarded about her life than she'd intended), but so far the strange life experiences have gone over well. Peggy, somehow, takes all of that in stride.
it makes sense to get in some target practice together, with both of them working for the guard. it also makes sense to keep their skills sharp in preparation for whatever might threaten them. it just feels like something might be coming, and as the tension between Wyver and Olympia grows, they don't have any choice but to be ready.
that doesn't mean they can't unite over something they're good at, though. Emma glances up at the sound of someone behind her, smirking when she catches sight of her new friend.] I hope your day was more exciting than mine.

3. DROWN SOME SORROWS. ( open. )
[ Emma's starting to spend a little too much time in the Entertainment District. her assignment with the guard, officially, is to patrol the Theatre District. on slow days, she tends to get more of a sense of the area than its people, observing the local businesses and the routines that the performers have fallen into. it's what brings her back at night, once her shift is over and she's in need of a drink.
if she's going to drink alone, she'd rather do it out in the open than in the empty place she's been staying. the music and dancing around her provides some distraction from her drink, even if she doesn't care to join in. she's sitting with a half-empty glass and a few empty seats around her, but if anyone would like to join her, honestly, she wouldn't mind the company.]
4. YOUR OWN ADVENTURE. ( open. )

so she's stuck with waiting for the threat to show up, and being confident she can stop it when she can. )
I find it odd that only now there is fear of trouble. This man has traveled only with his wife for so long. What could have aroused such a threat?
( it didn't seem like Bosso nor his wife were particularly concerned about it, even with a stranger lingering around. )
no subject
[ war is starting to feel like something people would prefer if only to say that they won and came out stronger and better than the other side. she knows they have a history of conflict, that these sides have been there for longer than either of them can speak to, but she also knows that everyone is still struggling to come to terms with what happened before she woke up.
they don't like relying on each other, and it seems to have put everyone on edge. either that, or they were already that way.]
no subject
( call her naive, and she is, but it honestly doesn't make much sense to Diana. they'd managed to put their differences aside once, yet without both sides suffering equally they had returned to old animosities. it was a shame that lives of both cities had to hang in the balance for anyone to make attempts at peace. )
If anything, things seem worse now. Perhaps the forced cohabitation rustled up more bad blood. I can't say why.
no subject
[ Olympia, at least, strikes her as a city that doesn't like to show its weaknesses. they let their guard down out of necessity, and now they're afraid of what that might have let in. it makes sense to Emma, probably more than anything else does around here, but it's hard to wrap her mind around the thought that animosity is almost preferable to peace.]
I have a hard time getting a read on Bosso's wife. There's something about her that...shifts a little too easily.
[ she lowers her tone, careful not to say it loud enough for anyone else to hear - but at the same time, it needs to be said. the woman is presenting two different versions of herself here, and part of that could be the situation they're in. they just can't afford to take any chances.]
no subject
it is probably for the best they focus on the task at hand. Diana glances at the woman that is quietly lingering at the priest's side. if anything the woman strikes Diana as displeased for the company, which makes sense if she's used to traveling with her husband alone. )
It is not so unusual to lower our guard around those we love. ( still, Diana can't rule the woman innocent of being the potential danger, though it begged the question, why now? ) My lasso has the power to compel the truth, but it is not a tool to be used without good cause. ( it's safe to say that Bosso and his wife both wouldn't appreciate it if the woman was indeed innocent. )
no subject
... If it isn't, they'd be in more danger once they bailed on us. [ which is the exact opposite of what both of them want to see happen here.]
There's that kid who keeps hanging around, but... he's just a kid. [ just a kid in a way that lands with some concern for the teenager, too. it'd be one thing if the assassin was older and more threatening. Emma can believe a grown woman might betray her husband - seeing a kid who's potentially willing to take a life and ruin his own in the process is a little harder for her to stomach.] Bosso's reached out to him before, that could be why he's so aware of him.
no subject
they're agreed on the boy, though; he is skittish and angry and nervous, yet none of those seemed to make him seem violent.
at least not to Diana. ) He would be a foolish assassin to be so easily seen. He seems to be want to be seen, almost. ( perhaps he was hoping Bosso would reach out to him again... Diana isn't certain. either way, ) It's possible the attacker is not anyone we have seen yet. We must remain vigilant.
no subject
So the lasso - if push comes to shove, can we use it without hurting someone? [ once they have a suspect they're sure of, she'll leave it to Diana to use it. Emma's magic is more likely to come in handy before that, if someone makes an obvious move.]
no subject
( this is noted with a wry smile. for the record, Diana is not exactly interested with snuggling up to the old man either. he's perfectly lovely, she just is not inclined. his wife has nothing to fear on that one.
as for the lasso, she nods. ) It can be painful to speak a truth you'd rather hold silent, but other than that, no harm will befall them. ( unless she wants harm to befall them, but Diana generally avoids inflicting more damage than she needs to. )
no subject
[ hanging out with old couples in their tents is asking a little much, even if it is to save a life. she takes note of Diana's look and shakes her head at her, trying to get that thought of her mind. thanks, wondie.]
Good. If we're certain, we could use it for a confession. [ if it's his wife, he'd probably need to hear it.] I wonder if there's a way to draw his enemy out.
no subject
[ Now that most of the danger seems to be relatively under control, Maximus has braved going out. Not that he was ever all that concerned about his safety - he wanted to avoid the annoyance that would be born of mistaken identity. It's already happened to him a few times too many, and that was before any announcements about Flaying or Murder.
There's still much of Olympia for him to see and learn. That's what brings him here, mostly to observe everyone. It'd been easy to spot Emma. ]
What's the saying? Penny for your thoughts?
no subject
for how fondly she looks back on Storybrooke, it had both.]
I'm happier when I'm punching people, maybe the timing's just never worked out for you to catch me doing what I do best.
[ it's why she'd joined up with the Royal Guard. for all the adjustments of this new world, there were some things she'd be good at no matter where she ended up.]
... I guess I just realized I'm getting used to all of this.
no subject
If I'm reading between the lines correctly, what you're saying it, you're realizing that you're not going back home.
[ In a way, Maximus sort of envies her. He'd never had strong enough connections to miss his former life the way she does, he wonders what it'd be like. ]
Hopefully I'll get to see you in your element some day, then.
no subject
[ with the way things are going in this world, she has a feeling that the fighting's not that far off. she's not loyal to any of these people, at least not in the sense of being attached to Wyver or Olympia, but she promised she'd be a part of it, and she's pretty good when it comes to keeping her word.
initially, she kinda thought she'd end up hitting him, but it didn't really work out that way in person.]
I'm realizing that - yeah. That this is all there is.
[ there's no convoluted scheme to get back to Storybrooke because Storybrooke isn't there to go back to.]
no subject
[ It's not common for him to try and be sympathetic or understanding, not without reason. But he likes Emma and enjoys her company, so he'll make the exception for her. ]
Once things settle, it'll get better. And you know your family's safe. Asleep, yes, but safe in their sleep.
no subject
[ does she? sometimes it's hard to trust that stasis is as safe as they claim. but, in spite of all of her uncertainties, Maximus has a point. if they can't be awake now, there's still the hope they might join her here someday.
it's just a little difficult to hold on to that when she gets too far inside her own head.]
My family has the worst luck when it comes to sleeping. If they're not cursed into it, they're in stasis.
[ it's the first time she knows she can't kiss them awake, no matter how often she might wish she could try. the thought prompts her to take another sip of her drink, and when the barkeep offers her a refill, she turns to Maximus.]
I'm buying.
[ he's trying to cheer her up. one good turn deserves another.]
no subject
How can I possibly say no?
[ He flashes her a quick smile and orders up a drink for himself. ]
Cheers.
no subject
I get the feeling that if you didn't want to be here, I'd know it.
[ she smirks, lifting her glass once he has one of his own.]
Now that it's safe for you to be out and about, what have you been up to?
no subject
Not much, really. I suppose I should get a job. Now that I'm no longer royalty.
no subject
[ royalty on the moon. it'd sound unbelievable, but her family was royalty in the Enchanted Forest.]
no subject
[ Maximus hadn't meant it to be something that he "casually" brings up. Normally, he's more careful in remembering who knows what about him, but even he has a slip up now and then, and. Well. Emma's as much of a friend as he's ever had. ]
I was king. Attilan was a kingdom, small as it was.
no subject
[ its casual enough for Emma. titles aren't something she spends a lot of time thinking about anymore. considering the company that she used to keep, all of this is still pretty normal.]
The first time we landed in a different world, my mom went from being queen to being a teacher.
no subject
[ He says it with a touch of teasing, but he tucks that away. Emma doesn't seem like the princess sort, anyway, and he's selective about who and why he tells about being a king.
There's no ulterior motive here. For once. ]
Being royalty is a burden. Better to be a teacher, or a researcher, or a member of the guard.
no subject
[ there's a world of difference between her mom being a queen and her being a princess. the one and only time anyone has used that title on her, she was pretending to be Princess Leia.
but there's enough truth to it that she smirks, because he's within his rights to tease her. she's not much of a princess, she'll allow it.]
You know what they say, heavy is the head that wears the crown.
[ and she knows (from seeing Regina), that the power that comes with it doesn't guarantee happiness.]
What kind of job are you interested in?
no subject
I was thinking of trying my hand at the Simwe Institute. I've always been a little bit scientifically inclined, it seems the most appropriate place. I can't imagine working at a temple or a silk shop.
no subject
[ it's meant as encouragement; information is something all of them could use right now. she's trying to learn what she can from the Royal Guard, but the slow days drive her insane.]
I can't really picture you in a silk shop, either.
no subject
I suppose it depends on your idea of "exciting." [ She steps up alongside her, surveying the metal targets spread out before them with a casual eye. She rather wishes they weren't stationary. ] Taking my horse around the outskirts on patrol was a little chilly, but I can't say I encountered anything more alarming than the snow-creature some children sculpted.
[ A pause. ]
It wasn't a snowman, I can tell you that much. God knows what it was meant to be. And how are you?
no subject
her idea of exciting is a little more than a snowman, but the description still prompts a wry smirk. not-a-snowman being the highlight of her day probably says a lot about what she finds on the outskirts.]
The most I'm protecting the city against is drunken fighting and bad decisions.
[ she shrugs, looking over her targets. it's better than nothing.]
I've been alright. Trying to get a sense of this place without having to ask for it, which mostly translates to realizing that if the people in this world didn't have something to argue about, they'd just invent it.
no subject
We certainly picked a good time to try and settle in, [ she agrees softly. ] Tensions weren't nearly this high when I got here but I'll bet even without the attack, something else would have set people on edge.
[ Peggy cocks her head and flicks her gaze between the other woman and the targets. ]
Looking to get a little practice in?
no subject
[ then again, sometimes Storybrooke wasn't any different. she's seen them race down the streets in a literal angry mob. sometimes it was deserved, sometimes it was anger that was just misplaced; people who were angry or scared and needed someone to blame. this world is a little like that, with Wyver and Olympia quick to target each other for their presumed vulnerabilities.]
I'm looking to get back into the swing of things. Jon Snow's been sparring with me, but I haven't fired a gun in a while.
[ she was better at this than she was with a sword. now, she's pretty sure she's a little rusty.]
It's like riding a bike, right?
[ her tone suggests they aren't entirely the same thing, but she wants to get back to what she's familiar with.]
no subject
I said the same thing about riding a horse when I got one not too long ago. Honestly, I think this might be easier.
[ Peggy carries her own firearm, of course, and she draws it now — a Walther PPK, which is a model that does exist beyond the 1940s but still might date her a little to the other woman. Even so, it's kept in pristine condition despite having seen active combat. It's her sidearm of choice but she's just as comfortable with rifles. ]
Go on. I won't suggest we make it a competition until you've eased back into the saddle, as it were.
no subject
[ because she won't lie, getting around here would be a hell of a lot easier with a horse. she's thought about looking into it, and maybe now that she's settled here, she will. in the adjustment of everything else, it seemed like a lot to drag an animal into it.]
I didn't come here for you to go easy on me.
[ her weapon's a little old-fashioned, but that's nothing compared to the swords they swung around in Storybrooke. besides, Emma has already heard bits and pieces about where and when Steve is from, and she's aware Peggy is from the same world.
... her boyfriend dates her more than her firearm.
Emma's, on the other hand, might be modern enough that Peggy won't be familiar with it. she still carries her badge and her holster like being the sheriff means something, but it's more a comfortable habit than anything else. it means when she draws her weapon, Peggy's right - this probably is easier.]
no subject
My apologies; I would never imply such a thing. God knows we get enough of that from most men at home. Or at least, [ she shrugs, glancing down slide out the magazine, slam it back home, and chamber a round; ] I did. But I've heard I'm — vintage.
[ Not her word. Her lips quirk and she looks over at Emma and the firearm she carries. A gun is a gun is a gun, really. And there's a fine selection at their disposal with the Guard's armoury. ]
Makes me sound like a bottle of wine in a cellar. [ And with a sigh, she swings up her arm and squeezes off a few shots — they hit dead centre on her target, of course, but she does study it like it could be better. ] Which I could actually do with. Drinks once we're through here?
no subject
[ classic, like the books their stories ended up in. she's pretty sure Peggy gets the idea by now -- the impossible stories that Emma's mentioned would make her sound insane if they weren't already in another world after the destruction of their own. it's all a little more believable here, everything from her vintage friend to the idea of Storybrooke being possible.]
Most men deserve a kick in the ass no matter where or when they're from.
[ Peggy is as good a shot as Emma expected, and while there's no beating a perfect shot, there's no immediate attempt to match it, either. she nods her approval as she readies her own firearm, briefly distracted by the promise of drinks before she focuses on her alignment.] Sounds like everything I didn't know I needed.
[ but once she takes her turn, there's no denying she needed the practice. her first few shots are slightly off-center. it's not until the last one that she can match Peggy on accuracy - and not for lack of trying. if there's anything Emma enjoys, it's a little friendly competition. ] Could've been worse. [ that's how she feels about most things around here.]
no subject
You've obviously done this before; the muscle memory is there. You're not as rusty as you think. [ Almost teasingly, ] If you miss your target by a few inches, you can always pass it off as a warning shot.
[ Not the thing to joke about in a combat situation, but war makes humour do curious things. Peggy extends a hand, as if to silently ask May I? And if she's granted that permission, she'll go about making some minor adjustments to Emma's form — maybe a light touch to her shoulder as a suggestion to relax there, or perhaps as an indication to shift her weight for balance. Minute. ]
And what would you say is classic about your family?
no subject
[ which is why she welcomes it when Peggy redirects her, making each light shift in movement until the other woman seems satisfied with her stance. for the most part, she's self-taught, but she's not so competitive that she can't take a few tips from a woman who clearly knows what she's doing.
she nods her appreciation for it.] The way they believe in each other, the good they could find in every world. With my parents, it's this... true, epic love. They faced countless obstacles, and the two of them always managed to find each other.
[ if Peggy wanted to get her to relax, talking about her family seems to take some of the tension out of her shoulders. she fires a shot - closer than the last, and the next one hits her target. so does the one after that.]
no subject
That's lovely, [ she remarks, and it could be the shots fired or the glimpse of her parents' relationship. Peggy smiles briefly, clarifies: ] Your family. I suppose any one of us should hope to be so lucky.
[ Peggy thinks of the war, the Valkyrie crashing into the Arctic, the long stretch of years between them that only the Orbiters could overcome. A second chance. ]
Although I wouldn't wish hardship on any couple, even if it does prove a sort of — how did you put it? Epic love.
no subject
[ even now, she thinks about their stasis pods are beside each other. she can't imagine one of them awake while the other sleeps, it's just not how they work. back when they were faced with the possibility of David being trapped in Neverland, Emma had prepared herself for the possibility of having to leave without both of her parents. now it's even more complicated; they share a heart.]
I never even believed anything like that existed until I found them. True love's not exactly common where I'm from.
[ at least not in how she was raised, moving from one family and or one home to the next. she thought she'd found it with Neal, but then he'd left - and nothing says conditional love like a convenient, seemingly self-serving disappearance. it's been a while since she's held that against him, but it had changed her perception of love like nothing else.]
no subject
[ She grew up as any little girl would, raised on stories about that very thing. But then the war came along, then it became time to be a lady, then it became time to marry a respectable Englishman, and settle down. Her dreams changed, or so she told her brother. No grand adventures, no sweeping romances. And even when she dove headlong into a life of espionage and a hail of bullets, love was never a factor in any of it. Until — ]
And people might say they know what love is, but you don't realise you haven't the foggiest until it hits you.
[ — until Steve Rogers. ]
no subject
Well, you sure seem like you've been hit.
[ she smiles, a little amused by the expression. the hitting in her family is literal, but for Peggy and Steve, it's something else entirely. love is like that, isn't it? different for everyone, but still perfectly capable of knocking you sideways.]
I was, too, but it was a long time ago.
no subject
And apparently the same holds true here. They're not trying to keep it a secret but even so. She's a spy, for God's sake. ]
I don't know if I should be embarrassed or pleased.
no subject
Go for pleased. If you can find some happiness here, you should own it.
[ they've survived the end of nearly every possible world. they all deserve a little happiness, and something tells her that's especially true of Peggy and Steve.]
no subject
It is a second chance, [ she admits. ] Not just for me and Steve, but for all of us. Whatever rhyme or reason there is to it, I can't say, but...
[ Peggy shrugs, trailing away. Then she huffs out a breath like a laugh, shaking her head. ]
Well, I'm sure you didn't come here to stand around and gossip. That can come with our well-deserved trip to the pub afterwards. Let's finish off these targets, shall we?
no subject
[ the idea of the end of worlds might not sit well with Emma, but if this is all there is, they might as well accept it. she still hopes that, sooner or later, she won't be alone in this world.]
Exactly, I'd rather sit around with some wine to balance out my gossip. Your turn?
[ now that she's warmed up, she's ready for a little more practice.]
