[ she'd thought he had. she'd been wrong. ]

[ not by her hand, but she doesn't mind byerly thinking otherwise. in the end, she hadn't wanted him to die anymore. somewhere along the way, she'd stopped hating khlyen and come to understand him instead. it isn't an excuse for any of the things he's done to her, but — she couldn't hate him anymore. ]

[ He pushes his hands into his pockets. ]
And so you became free.
no subject
[ did she tell him about those? no? ah well. ]

And who are the Hullen?

I'll tell you if you find me another drink.

I live to serve.
[ And a momentary quirk of his lips at his most amusing jape. Then he looks around for a likely doorway, something that looks sufficiently like a den of sin and illicit activity; he finds one in the next block, and tows her inside. ]

[ maybe he is, maybe he isn't. right now, dutch doesn't much care, beyond the fact that she's still trying very hard to be drunk so that she doesn't have to think about johnny being gone.
but she said she'd tell him about the hullen and once they're both seated in a tiny nook of the den of sin and illicit activity he's so quickly found for them and she's ordered a glass of whiskey, dutch leans her arms on the table. ] The Hullen are parasites living in green plasma that can bond with humans, making them stronger, almost impossible to kill, and part of the Hullen hivemind.

[ By takes a wry, sardonic sip of his wine, eyes fixed to see just how badly she'll be irritated by his quip. ]
Who would ever turn them down?
no subject
before finding out that much, she would have been more irritated. now, she's more ruthless. ] You'd lose everything that makes you you. [ her tone isn't sharp, but the words are still pointed. ]
no subject
I'd retain my beautiful eyelashes, wouldn't I?

Rude. So I take it you fought against them. For - individualism, and the human spirit, et cetera.
no subject
I was about to die in a war against them.
[ death, for her, is all but a certainty at this point. if she kills aneela, she'll die, too. if she doesn't kill aneela, aneela will kill her and she'll still die.
but oh, she's not fighting for any reason but to prove something to a dead man. ]

[ He cocks his head to the side. ]
Then...You must feel very mixed feelings about having been brought here. A world destroyed - but the Hullen with it, and you yourself given a second chance at life.
no subject
[ she'd thought she was prepared to die. the second chance at life? she's not sure she wants it at the cost of being forgotten. at the cost of never fighting aneela. she doesn't want it if johnny's not here, or d'avin, or even pree.
which is why she's trying to damn hard to stay drunk right now. ]
no subject
[ He tilts his head very slightly to the side. ]
So why did you oppose them?
no subject
Why the hells do you care?
no subject
Why wouldn't I care? You're an interesting woman. And it's an interesting conundrum. What sort of bravery is it that leads someone to resist something easy and advantageous and altogether counter the human spirit...?
no subject
Pretty sure it's what I was trained to do.
no subject
[ He settles back in his chair. ]
Giving into the path you were set on as a child? That would be bitterly ironic - free will being preserved by a woman with none of her own. Doesn't seem quite right.
no subject
she doesn't hate him anymore. now, in some fucked-up way, she wants to make him proud. to prove that she's the better daughter. (aneela and her are two sides of the same coin, two wolves. those were aneela's words when she made dutch, weren't they? their dna's identical but mirrored.) ]
Don't worry. I wasn't doing it alone.
