[ she's not joking. dutch bumps her hip against his, deliberate. a rebuke of sorts, as though he should already know the answer. ]

Not since. [ khlyen started her young. the other girls learned how to dance and enchant a royal; dutch learned those two things and how to kill. ]

she has her answers, but she's not quite drunk enough to spill all of that. ]

[ By looks away, smiling vaguely. His voice is low, soothing - bantering, really, rather than pushing. ]

It seems like it's rarely a good thing to be assigned some special destiny. Quite cuts down on your own options.

[ dutch snorts. ladylike, that. ] I ran away, didn't I?

Quite so. Tell me - did your destiny ever come after you?

Oh, like he'd let me go.

[ she'd thought he had. she'd been wrong. ]

Ah. And what happened?

He died.

[ not by her hand, but she doesn't mind byerly thinking otherwise. in the end, she hadn't wanted him to die anymore. somewhere along the way, she'd stopped hating khlyen and come to understand him instead. it isn't an excuse for any of the things he's done to her, but — she couldn't hate him anymore. ]
